David Cameron: Britain faces crisis of confidence

David Cameron: Britain faces crisis of confidence

David Cameron has warned that Britain is facing a crisis of confidence with a “general feeling” that the “best days” of the country are now behind us.

The Prime Minister has admitted that there is now a “sense” that rich and powerful Britons have been “serving themselves” and urges people to work more closely together to build a better society.
In an interview with this week’s Big Issue magazine in the wake of the phone hacking scandal, Mr Cameron says that he “passionately believes” that Britain can be a country that “believes in itself”.
Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrat Business Secretary, admitted yesterday that ministers had been scared to face up to powerful people.
“The Government is reluctant to take on vested interests with deep pockets and expensive lawyers,” he said.
In an interview, Mr Cable also said there were “questions” over whether News Corporation and the Murdoch family were “fit and proper” people to own media interests. James Murdoch is set to face shareholders in BSkyB later this week although he is unlikely to be removed from the company.
The furore over the phone hacking scandal is expected to subside this week with many MPs on holiday.
However, key figures at News International have been asked to provide further evidence to Parliament on the scandal in the coming days. Jon Chapman, another senior legal executive at the firm, said over the weekend that he wished to provide evidence to MPs as some of the testimony given by the Murdochs to Parliament last week may have contained “serious inaccuracies”.
David Cameron’s comments in the Big Issue interview came ahead of the first publication of official indicators today from the Office of National Statistics which are intended to gauge the happiness and wellbeing of the nation.
In the interview, Mr Cameron said: “Over the past few years, this country has had some real knocks and people’s confidence in our country has been shaken to the core.
“I’m talking about the expenses scandal, the financial crisis, this whole disgraceful and sorry episode of phone hacking. There’s a sense that the rich and the powerful – politicians, bankers, the press and the police – have been serving themselves, not each other.
“Add to all that the way the world is changing, with the rise of new powers like China and India, and I think there’s a general feeling that maybe our best days as a country are behind us.”
Mr Cameron sets out his vision for the Britain he would like to have established when he steps down. “If you ask me what I want Britain to look like and feel like at the end of my time as prime minister, I want us to be a country – and a people – which has our confidence back,” he said.
“Institutions that are beyond reproach, that serve the public not the other way round. A Britain that believes in itself.”
Mr Cameron uses the interview to attempt to kick-start his “Big Society” proposals. He says: “I just profoundly believe that in life we have obligations beyond paying taxes and obeying the law. The Big Society is about trying to create a culture where people ask 'What more can I do?’

Follow orders immediately or contempt of court's proceedings will start: SC

Follow orders immediately or contempt of court's proceedings will start: SC

Staff Report

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has asked the Federal Secretary Establishment today to follow court’s orders for restoration of Hussain Asghar immediately to probe Hajj corruption scam otherwise court will start proceedings over contempt of the court, SAMAA reported on Monday.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry lead bench resumed hearing of the Hajj corruption case linked with former federal minister for religious affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi and others.

The Chief Justice expressed stern displeasure over absence of DG FIA again today while Federal Secretary Establishment gave excuse that he is not present in Islamabad.

The Federal Secretary Establishment also failed to present official notice for restoration of Hussain Asghar for continuation of Hajj Corruption scam.

The court expressed stern annoyance over it and asked the Federal Secretary Establishment to restore Hussain Asghar on Hajj corruption scam before 11.30am today or court will start action against contempt of court.

The Chief Justice said in his remarks that every order issued by the court is considered final but a state institute’s attitude towards the Supreme Court of the country is not understandable.

“Right in front of the court, a state institute is doing contempt of the court but remember it that even if chief executive will become a hurdle between the implementation of court’s orders, he will also be tackled” he added today.

Earlier yesterday, immediately after start of case hearing, the Supreme Court expressed stern displeasure over absence of DG FIA and ordered that he should be presented before the court within five minutes but he did not appear.

The Chief Justice said in his yesterday’s remarks that the government tries to save the robbers; who ever shows interest in exposing the corruption he is transferred or removed from the case.

He added that what else can be worse than it that even the Hajis were not spared of corruption and they were looted.

NEW DELHI: Top Indian and Pakistani officials are meeting in New Delhi for peace talks against the backdrop of a recent terror attack that killed 20 people in India’s financial capital.
Tuesdays’ meeting between the foreign secretaries of the archrivals is expected to focus on confidence-building measures, trade and people-to-people exchanges.
The talks will lay the groundwork for a meeting between the foreign ministers of both nations on Wednesday.
Peace talks between the nuclear-armed South Asian neighbours broke down over a terrorist attack in Mumbai in 2008 by 10 gunmen.
The countries decided to restart the peace process in February and have since discussed Kashmir and the continuing threat of terrorism.
