Snow smacks US Northeast; millions without power

Posted:

A freak October snowstorm knocked out power Sunday to more than 3.2 million homes and businesses across the US Northeast, with close to two feet (60 centimetres) of snow falling in some areas over the weekend.

The storm was even more damaging because leaves still on the trees caught more of the particularly wet and heavy snow, overloading branches that snapped and wreaked havoc.

"You just have absolute tree carnage with this heavy snow just straining the branches," said National Weather Service spokesman Chris Vaccaro.

From Maryland to Maine, officials said it would take days to restore electricity, even though the snow ended Sunday.

The storm smashed record snowfall totals for October and worsened as it moved north. Communities in western Massachusetts were among the hardest hit. Snowfall totals topped 27 inches (68.6 centimetres) in Plainfield, and nearby Windsor had gotten 26 inches (66 centimetres) by early Sunday.

The storm was blamed for at least six deaths, and states of emergency were declared in New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts and parts of New York.

Roads, rails and airline flights were knocked out, and passengers on a JetBlue flight were stuck on a plane in Hartford, Connecticut, for more than seven hours on Saturday.

More than 800,000 power customers were without electricity in Connecticut alone shattering the record set in August by Hurricane Irene. Massachusetts had more than 600,000 outages, and so did New Jersey including Gov. Chris Christie s house. Parts of Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, New York, Maine, Maryland and Vermont also were without power.

Iran parliament to question Ahmadinejad over fraud

Iran s parliament is set to summon President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for questioning over an economic scandal and his polices after the required number of lawmakers signed a petition Sunday, the latest salvo in a long battle between the president and his rivals.

Ahmadinejad would be the first president to be hauled before the Iranian parliament, a serious blow to his standing in a conflict involving the president, lawmakers and Iran s powerful clerics.

At least 73 lawmakers signed the petition to question Ahmadinejad, just above one-quarter of the 290 members required by Iran s constitution to call in a president.

Earlier the parliament found Ahmadinejad s economics minister guilty in relation to a $2.6 million fraud case, considered the largest in Iran s history.

This is just one of several economic misconduct cases that target Ahmadinejad allies, evidence that his political struggles are a factor. Ahmadinejad has been wrestling with the parliament and the clergy over in the run-up to parliamentary elections in March and a presidential election in 2013.

Ahmadinejad has come under increasing attacks in recent months from the same hard-liners who brought him to power.

EU leaders call on G-20 for more joint action

Two European Union leaders have called on the upcoming G-20 summit of wealthy and developing countries to build on EU plans to stabilize the debt-burdened eurozone and further boost the global recovery.

EU Council President Herman Van Rompuy and Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso wrote in a letter to G-20 leaders that there was "continued need for joint action" to get the world economy back on track.

A three-pronged deal reached last Thursday by the EU appears to have met expectations for some kind of major action, and stock markets rallied in Europe and around the world in response. The EU plan retools the eurozone s underpowered bailout fund, calls on banks to take 50 percent losses on Greek bonds, and orders them to raise €106 billion ($150 billion) in new capital by June.

The buoyant mood could be shortlived if G-20 leaders do not use their summit in Cannes, France, on Thursday and Friday to build on those achievements, the two leaders said in their letter.

"Whilst we in Europe will play our part, this cannot alone ensure global recovery and rebalanced growth. There is a continued need for joint action by all G20 partners," the letter, sent out on Saturday, said.

"More needs to be done at the global level. Many of the distortions underlying the large pre-crisis imbalances are still to be addressed," the two warned.

U.S. President Barack Obama has already said the European plan to tackle the its debt crisis would have an impact on the U.S. economy, but stopped short of saying whether it would be enough to prevent another global recession.

Two key PML-N office-bearers said the party had done its homework before announcing its plan to launch the anti-government movement, but said they could not disclose its details at this stage...
