Allegation about Zawahiri mere conjecture: FO

ISLAMABAD, May 7: The Foreign Office dismissed on Monday US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's allegations about Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri's presence in Pakistan as "conjectures" and asked Washington to share any actionable intelligence available with it.

Foreign Office spokesman Moazzam Khan, when asked about Secretary Clinton's claim about Zawahiri hiding in the country, said: "These are all conjectures. If the US has any evidence, information or actionable intelligence, they should share it with us."..

Clinton hits out at Pakistan in India

NEW DELHI: US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on a three-day visit to India, accused Pakistan on Monday of not doing enough to bring key terror suspects to justice and hinted that Al Qaeda fugitive Ayman al Zawahiri could be hiding in Pakistan.

Ms Clinton used a public appearance in Kolkata, where she arrived for an overnight stay on Sunday, to also press India to cut its dependence on oil imports from Iran before the United States was compelled to impose penalties on New Delhi...

JC postpones nomination of ad hoc, acting judges

ISLAMABAD, May 7: The Judicial Commission (JC) postponed deliberation on nomination of two ad hoc and one acting judges in the Supreme Court to complete the composition of a bench that will hear an appeal, whenever filed, against slapping the prime minister with contempt.

Headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, the 10-member commission deferred the deliberations for which the session was called after it transpired that raising the matter before time, especially when the appeal on part of the prime minister has not been filed, would be inappropriate...

US govt won't pursue ROZ issue in Congress

LAHORE, May 7: Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar wants India to take a 'bold initiative' to resolve the Siachen dispute, while Indian High Commissioner Sharat Sabharwal says the Kargil episode has made things difficult.

In reply to questions by Indian businessmen who are here on a two-day visit to attend an economic conference, Ms Khar said Pakistan had suffered heavy human losses in Siachen and it believed that all outstanding issues with India could be resolved through a sustained dialogue. Five girls die in school roof collapse

45pc cut in water share of Punjab, Sindh

ISLAMABAD, May 7: Because of a major decline in river flows, the Indus River System Authority reduced on Monday the water shares of Punjab and Sindh by 45 per cent with immediate effect, raising fears of an adverse effect on Kharif crops and a decline in power generation.

A senior official told Dawn that total flows in rivers had suddenly plunged to 119,000 cusecs from about 160,000 cusecs a week ago because of a fall in temperatures in Skardu...

ISLAMABAD, May 7: Noor Alam Khan of the PPP appears to be the richest member of the National Assembly with the value of his declared assets exceeding Rs32 billion — much more than the joint worth of the few other billionaires in the house.

According to the statement of assets and liabilities for 2010-11 submitted to the Election Commission, Noor Alam owns 200 acres of prime land in Peshawar valuing Rs160 million per acre. The value of the inherited land comes to Rs32 billion. His other assets include gold ornaments worth Rs11.6 million, two vehicles and a house. He has declared the value of furniture and articles of personal use at Rs1 million...

Shahbaz's assets go up by Rs69.19m in a year

ISLAMABAD, May 7: The assets of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, one of the richest members of the Punjab Assembly, have increased by Rs69.19 million to Rs315.78 million in one year from Rs246.59 million, while his liabilities have declined to Rs105.35 million from Rs152.26 million.

In statements of assets and liabilities for 2011 submitted to the Election Commission, Shahbaz Sharif has declared that total assets of his family, including those of his two wives, have gone up by Rs97.04 million to Rs482.25 million...
