Assembly backs South Punjab, Bahawalpur provinces

LAHORE, May 9: In a rare show of unanimity, the treasury and the opposition in the Punjab Assembly jointly adopted on Wednesday two resolutions calling for restoring the Bahawalpur province and carving out a new Janoobi (south) Punjab province comprising the Seraiki belt, but excluding the three districts of the former princely state.

The National Assembly had already passed a resolution last week asking for creation of the Janoobi Punjab province...

Govt raising money to ease power crisis

ISLAMABAD, May 9: With the electricity shortfall touching about 7,000MW on Wednesday, the government decided to immediately release Rs23 billion to power companies and fuel suppliers and to raise another Rs70 billion through term finance certificates (TFCs) within a week in an effort to ease power crisis.

According to a senior government official, the decision had been also conveyed to independent power producers (IPPs) who had given a deadline of May 10 to clear the dues or face legal proceedings leading to encashment of government guarantees...

Copies of detailed judgment sent to 14 top offices

ISLAMABAD, May 9: The Supreme Court office dispatched on Wednesday the certified copies of Tuesday's detailed verdict explaining the reasons behind Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's conviction in the contempt case to 14 top offices in the country.

The copies were sent to President Asif Ali Zardari through his Secretary General Salman Farooqi, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Khusnood Akhtar Lashari, Senate Chairman Nayyar Bokhari, Speaker of the National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza, National Accountability Bureau Chairman Admiral (retd) Fasih Bukhari, Attorney General Irfan Qadir, Law Secretary Yasmin Abbasy, Secretary of the Election Commission, Cabinet Division Secretary Nargis Sethi and the registrars of all five high courts...

Two killed

QUETTA, May 9: Two persons, including a Hindu beggar, were killed here on Wednesday.

According to police, the body of a man, identified as Nawaz, was found in Killi Shahnawaz area. He was a resident of tehsil Samandri in Faisalabad. Sources said the body bore marks of multiple knife wounds. The motive behind the killing was not known. In another incident, gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire on a man in Killi Faizabad area. The victim, identified as Ram Chand, died on the spot. Police said he was a beggar and resident of Sanghar in Sindh...

Tripartite military meeting soon
