Talks continuing with US: Gilani

LONDON, May 11: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said on Friday that Pakistan and the United States were holding negotiations over the reopening of routes for Nato supplies to Afghanistan following a unanimous resolution adopted by parliament on the recommendations of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security.

In the light of these recommendations and resolution, Pakistan's discussions with the US were currently in progress; therefore a decision whether or not to attend the Nato summit in Chicago has yet not been taken...

'Invitation linked to supply route reopening'

BRUSSELS: Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen suggested on Friday that Pakistan could miss out on important talks on the future of Afghanistan if it failed to reopen supply routes in time to secure a place at a Nato summit in Chicago on May 20-21.

Speaking at a news conference, Mr Rasmussen made no explicit reference to Pakistan, which closed transit routes to Afghanistan after 24 of its soldiers were killed in a Nato cross-border air attack last November...

Rs23bn released to end unscheduled loadshedding

ISLAMABAD, May 11: Strong protests in parliament and on the street against frequent and prolonged power outages forced the government on Friday to release Rs23 billion to clear a part of circular debt to end at least the unscheduled loadshedding.

Minister of State for Water and Power Tasneem Qureshi informed the Senate that about Rs23 billion was being released on Friday to substantially reduce the duration of loadshedding. The money will be paid directly to independent power producers (IPPs) and Wapda's generation companies (Gencos) for onward payment to the Pakistan State Oil (PSO) for the purchase of fuel...

Fighter jet crashes, pilot ejects
