White House smothers bill limiting payment

WASHINGTON, May 16: The White House has rejected a House bill which places limitation on reimbursements to the government of Pakistan and imposes new restrictions on US assistance to that country.

The bill requires the secretaries of defence and state to certify to the US Congress that Pakistan is cooperating with the United States in the war against terror, dismantling IED networks and preventing nuclear proliferation...

Court censures FIA, hands over Steel Mills probe to NAB

ISLAMABAD, May 16: Disillusioned with FIA's investigations into the whopping loss of Rs26.5 billion in the Pakistan Steel Mills in 2008-09 alone, the Supreme Court entrusted on Wednesday the job of recovering the plundered money to the National Accountability Bureau.

"To secure the interest of public at large, the propriety demands that the investigation so far conducted by the FIA, which appears to us unsatisfactory, shall now be taken over by the NAB authorities," Justice Tariq Parvez said in a detailed verdict on the PSM mega scam...

'No strings attached to NATO invitation'

ISLAMABAD, May 16: The government has yet to take a final decision about reopening Nato supply lines and a perception that it has agreed behind closed doors to US demands in this regard is wrong, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said on Wednesday.

He said at a press briefing after a meeting of the federal cabinet that Nato Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen had extended an unconditional invitation to President Asif Ali Zardari to participate in the organisation's summit in Chicago...

Tariff raised by around 16pc

ISLAMABAD: The government raised the electricity tariff on Wednesday by around 16 per cent.
The lifeline consumers using up to 50 units per month have been exempted from the increase which will raise an additional Rs88 billion.

According to a notification issued by the ministry of water and power, the tariff for domestic consumers of up to 100 units has been raised by 71 paisa to Rs5.25 per unit. They will also have to bear an additional burden of fuel adjustment charges for February and March in their next electricity bills...

Durrani's retort to Beg over money for politicians

ISLAMABAD, May 16: Former director general of ISI Lt-Gen (retd) Asad Durrani spilled the beans on Wednesday when he claimed before the Supreme Court that his then boss, the army chief, Gen (retd) Mirza Aslam Beg, was on board from the very beginning in the plan to disburse donations among politicians in the 1990s.

A day ahead of hearing of the Asghar Khan case, Mr Durrani said in a concise statement that Gen Beg was associated with the process of issuing instructions and also with overseeing the operation of disbursement of the funds...

Anomalies found in Rs4.6bn power project

LAHORE, May 16: A two-member inquiry committee of the Ministry of Water and Power has found "numerous discrepancies and procedural anomalies" in the award of contract by Wapda for Rs4.6 billion Golen Gol Hydropower project.

In its "confidential report" (No1(6)DS(a)/2012), the fact-finding inquiry committee has maintained that the "bid evaluation was not according to relevant clauses of instructions provided in the tender document"...

Pakistan yet to sign route deal, says US

WASHINGTON, May 16: The US State Department said on Wednesday that Pakistan has "endorsed the conclusion" but has not yet signed a deal to reopen Nato supply routes to Afghanistan.

Also on Wednesday, the US media reported that under the proposed agreement the United States would have to pay additional $365 million a year to Pakistan for using the routes...
