Commission proposes jail terms for jirga-imposed marriages

ISLAMABAD, May 19: Taking a serious note of the practice of giving women and little girls in marriage as 'Badal-i-Sulha' (exchange of womenfolk to settle disputes) through the jirga system, the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan (LJCP) recommended on Saturday stern punishments to discourage the custom.
A meeting of the LJCP, presided over by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry at the Supreme Court building, suggested amendments to relevant laws to award rigorous punishment to those who abet, instigate, demand or receive a female in marriage as Badal-i-Sulha. DPC's long march over route reopening on 27th

LAHORE, May 19: The Defence of Pakistan Council announced on Saturday that it would undertake a long march from Karachi to Islamabad on May 27 in protest against an anticipated reopening of Nato supply routes by the government.
"We have unanimously decided to initiate a long march against the possible restoration of Nato supplies. Water scarcity threatens to halve cotton output

Jail official shot dead

QUETTA, May 19: The chief jail warden of the Quetta District Prison was shot dead by unidentified men on Saturday, police sources said.

Syria bomb kills nine; Damascus alleges foreign plot

DAMASCUS, May 19: A car bomb blew up at a Syrian military post in the eastern city of Deir al-Zor on Saturday, killing nine people, an attack that Syria alleged was the latest proof that an uprising against President Bashar al-Assad was a foreign plot.
