QUETTA, May 23: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said the Constitution will take its course if the prime minister fails to take steps, with immediate effect, to resolve the crisis in Balochistan, warning that imposition of emergency could be one of the options to restore sanity to the province.

Dr Afridi jailed for 33 years for helping CIA

LANDI KOTAL, May 23: A local doctor accused of helping the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) acquire DNA samples of members of Osama bin Laden's family was sentenced on Wednesday to 33 years in prison for treason.

Officials said Dr Shakil Afridi who worked as a government surgeon was also fined Rs 320,000 and in case of default he would have to undergo an additional three years imprisonment...

PAC wants names of judges who are members of Palm Club

ISLAMABAD, May 23: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly has decided to get the names of Supreme Court judges who have the membership of Lahore's controversial Royal Palm Club.

The committee suspects that judges might have withheld a judgment for over a year on a case relating to illegal lease of land and construction of the club because they were given the club membership for a token fee...

Remarks surprise legal experts

ISLAMABAD: The unexpected remarks made by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Wednesday about possible imposition of a state of emergency in Balochistan startled the legal community with some legal experts saying that only the executive had the authority to take such a step.

When contacted for comments on the chief justice's remarks during the hearing about the law and order situation in the province at the Quetta registry, they said the court had no authority to order or direct the federal government to impose emergency in any part of the country and that it was the sole prerogative of the country's chief executive...

Cabinet sets up committees on Balochistan, Sindh violence

ISLAMABAD, May 23: The federal cabinet formed two ministerial committees on Wednesday to investigate incidents of violence in Karachi over the controversial issue of the demand for a new Muhajir province and to formulate recommendations to resolve the issue of missing persons in Balochistan.

Briefing reporters on the decisions taken by the cabinet which met under Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said the committee on Karachi would be headed by senior PPP member and Commerce Minister Makhdoom Amin Fahim whereas Law Minister Farooq Naek would head a similar body to look into the law and order situation in Balochistan with particular reference to the missing persons...

Copter falls into river: instructor, pilot missing

GUJRANWALA, May 23: A small helicopter of Army aviation fell into Chenab river near Wazirabad on Wednesday and till late into night rescuers were searching for the trainee pilot and the instructor.

According to eyewitnesses, the helicopter used for training plunged into the river at around 11:30am near Laweriwala village. They said the helicopter was flying very low at the time of crash...

'Sindh in danger of suffering Balochistan-style mayhem'

LAHORE, May 23: The murder of nationalist leader Muzaffar Bhutto, one of the prominent victims of enforced disappearance in Sindh, and the brazen attack on a peaceful political rally in Karachi on Tuesday that claimed at least 16 lives appear to be the latest manifestations of violent suppression of political debate and in the absence of effective measures can plunge Sindh into Balochistan-style mayhem, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) said on Wednesday.

A statement issued by the HRCP said: "The body of Muzaffar Bhutto, secretary general of Jeay Sindh Muttahida Mahaz, who went missing in February 2011, was found near Hyderabad. He was shot in the head and in the upper torso and the body also bore torture marks. He had also been picked up in 2005 but was allowed to return home...

Indian army helicopter crashes in Siachen

SRINAGAR, May 23: An Indian army helicopter crashed on a glacier battlefield high in the Himalayas, killing the pilot and injuring another person, an official in Indian-held Kashmir said on Wednesday.
