Elections on schedule: Raja proposes talks to resolve crisis

BESHAM, July 14: The country is in the midst of a crisis and the situation demands that major political leaders put their heads together, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said during inauguration ceremony of a hydroelectricity project in Besham, Shangla district, on Saturday.

"I once again invite all political parties to come and sit together to reach a consensus on national issues and to find a workable solution to the persisting crisis," he said, adding that there was no danger of confrontation between parliament and the judiciary....

PESHAWAR, July 14: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman came out with a grim warning on Saturday: removal of another prime minister could derail democracy. He sounded a note of caution for the judiciary, too: please stay `neutral' and do not become `a part of conspiracies'.

"If the prime minister goes, the system can collapse," he said in reply to a question about the July 25 deadline given by the Supreme Court to Raja Pervez Ashraf in the NRO implementation case....

Afghan MP among 23 dead in blast

KABUL, July 14: A suicide bomber blew himself up on Saturday in a wedding hall in northern Afghanistan, killing at least 23 people including a prominent warlord-turned-politician and three security officials, Afghan authorities said, in an attack that dealt a setback to efforts to unify the nation's ethnic factions.

Ahmad Khan Samangani, an ethnic Uzbek who commanded forces fighting the Soviets in the 1980s and later became a member of parliament, was welcoming guests to his daughter's wedding when the blast ripped through the building in Aybak, the capital of Samangan province....

Nato goods worth millions of dollars rotting

KARACHI, July 14: Perishable goods worth millions of dollars that have been stuck at the country's ports since the closure of Nato supply routes would have to be destroyed because they have crossed their expiry dates, official sources said on Saturday.

Although the Federal Board of Revenue has finalised rules and procedures for clearance and handling of the stranded cargo, the supplies would not be restored for another couple of weeks, the sources said....

Strike observed against Kuchlak attack

QUETTA, July 14: A strike was observed in the provincial capital and northern parts of Balochistan on Saturday in protest against the bomb attack on the ANP public meeting in Kuchlak.

At least six people were killed and several others injured when the cycle-bomb exploded near the rally on Friday....

WASHINGTON, July 14: US President Barack Obama met Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani at the White House two years ago and offered to work with Pakistan to build trust between the two countries, says a Washington Post report.

During the Oct 20, 2010 meeting, President Obama told Gen Kayani that "trust does not happen overnight, but it has to happen. Otherwise we will be on a collision course," the Post reported....

400,000 asked to leave homes after rains in Japan

TOKYO, July 14: About 400,000 people were ordered or advised to leave their homes in southwest Japan on Saturday as heavy rain pounded the area for a third day leaving 29 dead or missing, officials and media said.

The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of more landslides and floods on the main southern island of Kyushu as rainfall of up to 11 centimetres per hour was recorded on Saturday....

Musa Gilani applies for bail in ephedrine case

RAWALPINDI, July 14: Ali Musa Gilani, a son of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, filed on Saturday an application in the Rawalpindi bench of Lahore High Court for a pre-arrest bail in the ephedrine case.
