Militants greet Ramazan with attacks: Gwadar raid kills 7 coast guards

QUETTA, July 21: At least seven personnel of Pakistan Coast Guards (PCG) were killed and three other people injured in an ambush in Pishikan area near Gwadar on Saturday.

"A coast guards checkpoint near the coastal town was attacked with rockets and automatic weapons," an official in Gwadar told Dawn....

Nine die in Orakzai suicide blast

KALAYA, July 21: In an apparent war of attrition between two militant groups in the tribal region of Orakzai, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive-laden vehicle near the house of a pro-government militant commander, killing at least nine people, a senior government official said.

"This is basically between two militant groups," Orakzai tribal region's administrator Khushal Khan told Dawn. He said details were sketchy, but the incident occurred in Speen Tall, an area between Orakzai and Kurram tribal regions....

Upper Dir bombing claims four lives

UPPER DIR, July 21: Four people, including three members of the same family, died and eight others suffered injuries when a bomb exploded near a pick-up truck in Doog Darra area of Upper Dir on Saturday morning.

According to Sheringal police, three people were killed on the spot and the fourth person died in hospital....

Local govt system for Fata in the offing

ISLAMABAD, July 21: The government is set to introduce a local government system in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas this year and has circulated copies of the draft law among the Fata legislators.

According to sources, the ruling coalition has asked the Fata legislators to give their recommendations and comments as early as possible on the draft 'Fata Local Government Regulations, 2012' because it wants President Asif Ali Zardari to promulgate it as an ordinance on the Independence Day....

SC to take up contempt law, NRO cases

ISLAMABAD, July 21: The coming week will be hectic in the Supreme Court. Not only is determining the contours of the new law on contempt of court on the agenda but also cases pertaining to the law and order situation in Balochistan and the implementation of the NRO verdict, in which Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf will have to answer questions regarding his government's stance on the letter that the court says should be sent to the Swiss authorities.

The week will commence with hearing on a set of challenges on Monday to the Contempt of the Court Act, 2012, perceived to have been adopted by parliament to protect Prime Minister Ashraf from possible disqualification....

LAHORE, July 21: In an effort to sound nonchalant towards the NA-151 by-poll results, the PML-N is saying that it does not need to 'waste its energies' at a time when the general election is round the corner.

"The party is presently focussing on the general election and this is why it did not bother to field its own candidate in the Multan by-poll," PML-N media coordinator Muhammad Mehdi told Dawn here on Saturday....

Police inch into gunman's booby-trapped house

AURORA (Colorado), July 21: Police on Saturday de-activated a tripwire and triggered a controlled blast in the booby-trapped apartment of the gunman accused of killing 12 people at a Batman film premiere.

Bomb experts were inching their way into the home of James Holmes, the 24-year-old who allegedly opened fire on a packed midnight screening of 'The Dark Knight Rises', also injuring 58 others....

Obama's Ramazan message backs democracy

Putin signs protocol for Russia to join WTO

MOSCOW, July 21: President Vladimir Putin on Saturday signed the bill ratifying Russia's entry to the World Trade Organisation after 18 years of often acrimonious negotiations, the Kremlin press office said.

Economists have long argued that Russia needed to join the WTO as it was the only major economy outside the body — following China's membership in 2001 — and the government hopes accession will stimulate growth.....

90 die in clashes across Syria

DAMASCUS, July 21: Heavy clashes raged between Syrian troops and rebels on Saturday, with at least 90 people killed nationwide, as the clock ticked down on a 30-day 'final' extension of a troubled UN observer mission.

At least 41 civilians were among the dead as clashes rocked both the country's largest cities, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.....

Brunei military helicopter crash kills 12 personnel

KUALA LUMPUR, July 21: Twelve military personnel including six cadets were killed in a Brunei air force helicopter crash while flying home after jungle training, a spokesman said on Saturday.

The crash occurred on Friday in Kuala Belait in the oil-rich sultanate on the island of Borneo.....
