$1.12bn payment expected from US this week

ISLAMABAD, July 24: The sliding rupee and the declining foreign exchange reserves are getting a temporary relief with the United States scheduled to transfer later this week about $1.12 billion to the State Bank of Pakistan as part payment for services provided to coalition forces.

Finance Secretary Abdul Wajid Rana informed a meeting of the Economic Coordination Committee of the cabinet on Tuesday that by the beginning of the next week, the country's foreign exchange reserves would likely increase to $16 billion...

Plea on NRO case returned with objection: Govt stance on Swiss letter unchanged

ISLAMABAD, July 24: A day ahead of the hearing of NRO implementation case by a five-judge Supreme Court bench, the federal government filed on Tuesday an application in which it unequivocally stated that it would not write a letter to the Swiss authorities to reopen graft cases against President Asif Zardari.

But the response drafted by Attorney General Irfan Qadir after holding brainstorming sessions with Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Law Minister Farooq H. Naek on Monday night was returned by the court office with an objection that a civil miscellaneous application could not be filed against a court decision, although a petition seeking review of an earlier order was possible...

Afghans reluctant to act against militant havens

ISLAMABAD, July 24: Afghanistan's refusal to act against militant sanctuaries in Kunar and Nuristan provinces has left the Pakistan government frustrated.

When Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf visited Kabul last week, one of his main objectives was to get a firm commitment from his host, President Hamid Karzai, that he would act against militants' sanctuaries in eastern Afghan provinces of Kunar and Nuristan from where terrorists have launched 15 attacks against Pakistani border posts and villages over the past year, killing 105 soldiers and civilians...

Officer hit by three bullets chases, kills one gunman

QUETTA, July 24: Two gunmen opened fire on the Deputy Director of Schools belonging to the Shia Hazara community, injuring him and his colleague, but despite having been hit by three bullets, the officer gave a hot chase to the assailants and hit one of them with his car, killing him on the spot.

Police said that when Deputy Director of Schools Abrar Hussain and his associate arrived near the Directorate of Education on the Shahwakshah road, the two gunmen started firing at his car...

Visa scam: FIA detains eight officials, three agents

LAHORE, July 24: The Federal Investigation Agency arrested on Tuesday eight officials of the passport office and the National Database and Registration Authority and three travel agents in connection with the UK visa scam.

The FIA had also taken into custody six women employees (data entry operators at the Bhagbanpura office) of Nadra, but released them on a personal guarantee of their head, Col (retd) Ahmad Khatak. But they will again appear before the FIA investigation team on Wednesday....

Rs14.6bn bailout package for Steel Mills approved

ISLAMABAD, July 24: With its capacity utilisation at a disgraceful 15 per cent, the loss-making Pakistan Steel Mills got another lease of life when the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet approved a Rs14.6 billion bailout package for it on Tuesday.

Presided over by Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, who is also head of the Cabinet Committee on Restructuring (CCOR), the ECC agreed to pay Rs8.6 billion to the PSM with the understanding that the corporation would achieve 63 per cent capacity utilisation by March 2013. An amount of Rs6 billion has already been paid to the PSM...

Scope of immunity clause widened: CJ

ISLAMABAD, July 24: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said on Tuesday the scope of Article 248 of the Constitution (immunity) had been expanded through a parliamentary enactment — a protection which earlier was only available to the president and governors.

"The law-making process through which the Contempt of Court Act 2012 was passed has even hit Article 63(1g) of the Constitution (disqualification for ridiculing the judiciary), rather they have made this provision of the Constitution redundant," observed the chief justice, who heads a five-judge bench hearing a set of identical petitions challenging the new contempt law...

13 Afghan policemen defect to Taliban

HERAT, July 24: An Afghan police commander and 12 junior officers defected to the Taliban after poisoning seven comrades, government officials in the western province of Farah said on Tuesday.

US says it will keep supporting Pak-India talks

Nadra conducts its own probe into 'UK visa scam'

ISLAMABAD, July 24: During its investigation into the 'UK visa scam', the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) is trying to determine how the data relating to the holder of a forged computerised national identity card (CNIC) matched with the family tree of the original card-holder.

"We are focusing on the specific point – how information about the fake identity card-holder matched with the family tree of the original card-holder," a senior official of Nadra told Dawn.He said the CNIC used in the sting operation conducted by the British tabloid The Sun was originally issued in 2000 in the name of Muhammad Ali and at that time Nadra had no biometric system, which captures fingerprints and even retina of an applicant...
