PPP, allies join walkout over water scarcity in Gwadar

ISLAMABAD, July 9: The Senate witnessed on Monday a rare scene when members from the ruling PPP and its key allies joined a token walkout as a mark of protest against an acute water shortage in Gwadar forcing the residents to migrate to other parts of the country and even Iran.

The issue was raised by Mir Hasil Bizenjo of the National Party who said the entire district was facing a grave human tragedy and urged members from the opposition parties to join him before he walked out of the house...

Contempt of court bill rushed through National Assembly

ISLAMABAD, July 9: Having lost one prime minister and seeking to protect another, the government rushed through the National Assembly a new contempt of court law on Monday as a possible shield against zealous judicial forays.

The 13-clause bill, which exempts "holders of public office" from the mischief of contempt in "exercise of powers and performance of functions" and allows for suspension of a sentence during the pendency of an appeal, was taken up for consideration immediately after it was introduced by Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Farooq H. Naek by suspending rules requiring its scrutiny by a house standing committee...

Fakhruddin emerges as consensus man for CEC

ISLMABAD, July 9: In a landmark decision, the Parliamentary Committee on Appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner and Members of the Election Commission of Pakistan unanimously approved on Monday the name of Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim for the prestigious CEC office which has been vacant since March.

He will be the 24th person to occupy the post, after 12 permanent and 11 acting CECs...

Army camp near Wazirabad attacked; seven soldiers killed

GUJRAT, July 9: Seven army personnel and a policeman died in a brazen attack on a camp near a bridge on the river Chenab and in an exchange of fire between some of the attackers and a police party on Monday.

Gujrat District Police Officer Raja Basharat Mehmood said the assailants who came by car and motorbike opened fire at the camp set up by the armed forces to search for the body of the pilot of a helicopter which had crashed some time ago...

Egyptian president and judiciary in tug of war

CAIRO, July 9: Egypt's top court on Monday rejected a decree by President Mohamed Morsi to reinstate the parliament it ruled invalid, setting the president on a collision course with the judiciary and the military that enforced the ruling.

"All the rulings and decisions of the Supreme Constitutional Court are final and not subject to appeal... and are binding for all state institutions," the court said in a statement...

KARACHI / NAWABSHAH, July 9: A New Delhi-bound Indian passenger plane from Abu Dhabi with 130 people on board made an emergency landing in Nawabshah after developing fault in its hydraulic system early Monday morning.

The landing at 3.27am was followed by tension-filled 13 hours when the captain of the aircraft declined to accept the hospitality offered by the authorities and refused to allow the 122 passengers and 8 crew members to move to the lounge and only wanted water to be served to them...

US likely to issue national interest waiver over Pakistan aid

WASHINGTON, July 9: The United States is likely to issue a national interest waiver to Pakistan so that it can continue to receive civil and military aid from Washington, diplomatic sources told Dawn.

A condition in the Kerry-Lugar-Berman bill requires the US State Department to certify that Pakistan is cooperating with the US in matters such as combating terrorism and dismantling nuclear proliferation networks...
