Bomb attack on Suparco staff bus

KARACHI, July 11: A man was killed and over 20 others were injured when a bomb exploded near a bus carrying employees of the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) to the city on Wednesday.

The explosion took place at Hub Chowki bus stop No 2 near Hub River Road and the injured were taken to the nearby Murshid Hospital and Civil Hospital. Later, the Suparco management shifted those in the Civil Hospital to the Liaquat National Hospital...

PM receives Registrar's letter on NRO case

ISLAMABAD, July 11: Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf informed the cabinet on Wednesday that he had, through the attorney general, received a letter from the Registrar of the Supreme Court asking the government to explain its position with regard to the decision of the Supreme Court for implementation of the NRO judgment.

Briefing reporters after a meeting of the cabinet, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Qamar Zaman Kaira said the law minister informed the cabinet that he and secretary of law had recently taken the charge and needed some time to thoroughly study the case to brief the cabinet and present its view in the court. He said the cabinet allowed the law ministry to work on it...

NA Speaker to form commission on new provinces

ISLAMABAD, July 11: A parliamentary process to create up to two new provinces from Punjab province moved a step further on Wednesday with the National Assembly authorising its speaker to name a commission to propose demarcation of and allocation of parliamentary seats and resources to the proposed units.

The move, likely to provoke heated debates inside and outside of parliament ahead of the next election, came after a message from President Asif Ali Zardari was read out by Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi calling for the constitution of the 14-member commission to implement, by amending the Constitution, two resolutions passed in May by the lower house and the Punjab assembly...

Project aimed at reducing system losses: Plan to change all gas meters

ISLAMABAD, July 11: The World Bank, government and natural gas utilities have agreed that all gas meters should be changed in order to reduce system losses as the existing meters have slowed down due to ageing, according to a government official.

Replacing the existing meters with new and better ones is part of the World Bank-funded Rs26 billion natural gas efficiency project, for which the bank is providing a $200 million loan to the Sui Southern Gas Company Limited (SSGCL)...
