ISLAMABAD, July 12: On Thursday the federal capital was jolted by two tremors. One a 6.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Islamabad and the other a shockwave sent to the new government by the Supreme Court with a message that it cannot evade the responsibility of writing the contentious letter to Swiss authorities for reopening graft cases against President Asif Zardari.

But the language of the order that came out late afternoon was such that the new government of Raja Pervez Ashraf got a breathing space for at least 13 more days to elucidate its plans about implementing the NRO verdict...

QUETTA, July 12: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry said here on Thursday the Supreme Court stood for supremacy of the Constitution and the law and would not accept any extra-constitutional measure in the country.

Speaking at dinner hosted by Balochistan High Court Bar Association in honor of judges of the Supreme Court and Balochistan High Court, he said: "I assure the lawyer fraternity and all other people on behalf of myself and other judges of the Supreme Court and high courts that the judiciary will continue to play its role in implementing the Constitution and the law."..

PESHAWAR, July 12: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lodged a strong protest with Punjab over what it described as its 'unprofessional response and bureaucratic inertia' that caused a 15-hour delay in autopsy of its nine trainee prison staff killed in a militant attack in Lahore on Thursday.

Home and Tribal Affairs Secretary Muhammad Azam Khan, in a "most immediate/high priority" letter addressed to his counterpart in Punjab, criticised the authorities concerned in Lahore for 'lack of coordination' and 'extremely unprofessional' response in registering the 'first information report' and initiating the process of autopsy and allied proceedings...

Bodies of 17 soldiers, civilian given to jirga

UPPER DIR, July 12: Bodies of 17 soldiers and a civilian killed in a cross-border attack on June 24 were shifted from Afghanistan to Pakistan on Thursday after militants in Kunar province struck a deal with a Pakistani jirga.The jirga comprising elders from Sunai Darra, Sabir Kallay, Maskeni and other border villages of Upper Dir held at least 10 rounds of talks with the militants in Kunar province.

According to jirga sources, the bodies were shifted to Sabir Kallay through Shahi Pass in the evening and handed over to the security forces...

Nine trainees from KP slain in Lahore terror attack

LAHORE, July 12: Terrorists armed with advanced weapons and hand-grenades stormed a private hostel in the city's densely populated area of Ichhra early Thursday morning and killed nine and injured as many under-training employees of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa prisons department.

According to a foreign news agency, the Taliban claimed responsibility for the pre-dawn attack. Police authorities said the gun-and-grenade attack was similar to terrorist attacks on an army camp in Gujrat and a police picket near the Babu Sabu Motorway interchange...

Procedure for clearance of Nato containers being finalised

KARACHI, July 12: The customs authorities are close to finalising the procedure for clearance of thousands of Nato/Isaf and US army containers stranded inside the country even after the announcement of a government decision to reopen routes into Afghanistan on July 3.

According to official sources, the major issues for clearance of goods lying inside the bonded areas of ports and even those that have left the ports but have not crossed the Afghan border have already been worked out. Soldier mistakenly crosses LoC

Ogra wants oil prices unchanged

ISLAMABAD, July 12: To the horror of the federal Minister for Textile, Makhdoom Shahabuddin, Ali Musa, son of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and principal secretary Khushnood Akhtar Lashari, another accused in the ephedrine case has turned approver against them, after former director general of health Dr Rashid Juma.

The new approver, Rizwan Ahmed Khan, a director of Danas Pharma, submitted his affidavit in the Control of Narcotic Substances (CNS) Court on Thursday in which he alleged that Makhdoom Shahab, Ali Musa Gilani and Khushnood Lashari were involved in illegal allocation and conversion of 2,500kg quota of controlled chemical ephedrine to his company.
