SC to take up contempt law case on 23rd

QUETTA, July 13: The Supreme Court has admitted for hearing all petitions challenging the new contempt of court law adopted by the parliament early this week and which became an act on Thursday after the president's assent.

A three-judge SC bench, headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry, fixed July 23 for hearing all the petitions filed against the new law...

Seven-year-old girl among six killed: Terror attack on ANP rally near Quetta

QUETTA, July 13: The senior vice president of Pashtun Students Federation and five others were killed and at least 22 people injured on Friday when a bomb went off near a public meeting of the Awami National Party in Kuchlak, some 25km of Quetta.

The injured included provincial president of the ANP, Aurangzeb Kasi, his wife and ANP activists...

Seven die in violence

QUETTA: Seven people, a woman and a policeman among them, were killed in incidents of firing and a landmine explosion in Quetta and Jaffarabad district on Friday, police said.

A woman was going home along with her son in Subatpur area of Jaffarabad district when she hit a landmine planted along a road. She died and her son Ali Bakhsh was taken to Dera Allahyar hospital with serious wounds...

Out of the blue, NA decides to probe debt burden

ISLAMABAD, July 13: For decades, political rivals have blamed one another for increasing Pakistan's debt burden without reaching a conclusive result. But, out of the blue, both the government and the opposition agreed in the National Assembly on Friday that a house committee probe who did what during the past 27 years.

The house speaker was authorised to name the bipartisan body, for which political parties were asked to send names after the house adopted a joint motion calling for constituting the committee to look into the "necessity of obtaining and utilisation" of domestic and foreign loans acquired since 1985...

NAB chief calls upon court to reopen cases against Sharifs

ISLAMABAD, July 13: The Chairman of the National Accountability Bureau, Admiral (retd) Fasih Bokhari, has requested an accountability court to reopen pending cases against PML-N leaders Nawaz Sharif and his brother Shahbaz Sharif.

"On the recommendation of a special committee, the NAB chairman has signed an application requesting the accountability court to reopen three references against the Sharif brothers to contest quashment petition which was filed by the Sharifs in the Lahore High Court in October 2011," NAB spokesman Zafar Iqbal told Dawn on Friday...

Force can't resolve Balochistan issue: Raja

Plans for food security index

ISLAMABAD, July 13: The government is expected to establish a food security index (FSI) for closer monitoring of indicators having impact on food security because of a correlation between high food prices and rise in poverty.

An official of the planning commission said the current system of weekly or monthly monitoring of prices of essential commodities through sensitive, wholesale and consumer price indicators could not capture the trend leading to shortage or surplus of food items and resultant prices of the items...

Raja to leave for S. Arabia tomorrow

Accord to regulate Nato supplies on the cards

Aircraft fault leaves 50 stranded in Delhi

KARACHI, July 13: Over 50 PIA passengers who were to go from New Delhi to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, via Lahore have been stranded in the Indian capital since Wednesday (July 11) after the PIA aircraft developed a fault in India, making it impossible for them to catch a connecting flight, sources told Dawn on Friday.

These passengers, most of whom are Indian or other foreigners, are expected to arrive from Delhi to Lahore on Saturday and have been booked for onward journey to Saudi Arabia the next day...

Militants flee back to Afghanistan

KHAR, July 13: Security forces and members of a local militia have forced the militants who sneaked into Mamond tehsil of Bajaur Agency from across the border on Thursday to flee back to Afghanistan, according to official sources here.

All the people who were taken hostage by the militants were freed and the entire area was cleared by early Friday morning, an administration official told Dawn. "The kitkot village which was seized by the militants has also been cleared of them."..
