Tribal jirga to settle polio row in Fata

PESHAWAR, July 16: Although a nationwide anti-polio campaign was launched on Monday, the authorities were yet to convince the Taliban shura on the importance of getting children of North and South Waziristan vaccinated against the debilitating disease.

According to sources, the political agent of North Waziristan has convened a jirga of local ulema and notables on Tuesday to find a solution to the problem posed by the Taliban vaccination ban that has deprived about 318,000 children of getting polio drops in the two agencies...

ISI cell on the receiving end of criticism

ISLAMABAD, July 16: While referring to the dreaded political cell in the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Supreme Court categorically stated on Monday that the judiciary would not accept any extra-constitutional interference in the democratic order.
Citing a number of judgments, including the July 31, 2009, landmark verdict which denounced successive military takeovers and the one which sent former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani home, a three-judge bench said that through these pronouncements the court had made it abundantly clear that the affairs of the state had to be governed strictly in accordance with the Constitution and no interference of any nature from functionaries, other than those under the Constitution, was acceptable...

India invites Pakistan for first series in 5 years

US troops to stay in Afghanistan till 2024: envoy

WASHINGTON, July 16: A US plan to keep some combat troops and an effective air power in Afghanistan is having a positive impact not only on the internal situation but also Kabul's neighbours, says a senior US diplomat. CJ says courts can guide legislatures to amend laws

RAWALPINDI, July 16: Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said the courts could give guidelines to legislatures to amend laws, rules and regulations.
