KARACHI/PESHAWAR, July 17: The polio prevention campaign suffered a double setback on Tuesday when a foreign doctor of the World Health Organisation associated with the immunisation work and his driver were injured in an attack in Karachi and a tribal jirga planned in North Waziristan to prepare ground for launching the campaign there could not be held because of a curfew in force there and concerns about security of health workers.

A Taliban ban on polio vaccination in North Waziristan has caused concerns about hundreds of thousands of children who have not been immunised there and in several other Fata areas...

Flow of supplies to be regulated: Pakistan, US close to signing Nato deal

ISLAMABAD, July 17: The US and Pakistan are close to signing an agreement regulating the flow of Nato troop supplies in and out of Afghanistan, codifying a somewhat informal arrangement that has fuelled the Afghan war over the past decade, US officials said on Tuesday.

Pakistan pushed for a written pact in drawn-out negotiations that led to the supply line's reopening two weeks ago following a seven-month blockade. Islamabad had imposed the blockade in retaliation for Nato air strikes that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers on the Afghan border...

Aid continued during route closure

WASHINGTON, July 17: The United States has continued to provide civilian assistance to Pakistan throughout the closure of the Nato supply lines, the US State Department said on Tuesday while insisting that Washington wanted to get its relationship with Islamabad back on track.

Court orders Riaz's arrest

RAWALPINDI, July 17: An anti-corruption court has ordered the arrest of property magnate Malik Riaz, his son Ali Riaz and five other accused in a land fraud case and sought their production before it on July 23.

The court issued the directives to the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) on Tuesday after examining the Lahore High Court's order regarding its proceedings in the case and restoring its arrest warrants issued on June 21...

CM unhappy with media portrayal of Balochistan

QUETTA, July 17: Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani has said that some sections and elements are trying to pave the way for an extra-constitutional action and accused the media, particularly TV channels, of presenting a gloomy picture about the law and order situation in Balochistan.

EC to provide transport in Multan by-poll

ISLAMABAD, July 17: For the first time in the electoral history of the country, the Election Commission has decided to provide transport to voters in the by-election for the NA-151 (Multan VI seat) being held on Thursday.

An official of the Election Commission said on Tuesday that 71 vehicles had been hired to provide transport to voters of 29 of the 245 polling stations. He also said the commission would provide transport to all voters in the next general elections. He said the vehicles would ply for the entire day to take voters to and from polling stations...

Anti-terror court rejects findings of Mumbai commission

Only court can fix cases for hearing: SC

ISLAMABAD, July 17: The Supreme Court hearing a review petition of Dr Arsalan Iftikhar, son of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, made it clear on Tuesday that it alone had the prerogative to list and fix cases for hearing.

"It is once again stated clearly that it is for the court itself to determine the listing of the cases," said a two-judge special bench comprising Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja and Justice Khilji Arif Hussain while dictating an order after a brief hearing on the petition...

Next meeting on fate of fishermen to be held in Islamabad

KARACHI, July 17: Recent Pakistan-India talks on the fate of fishermen, who frequently drift into each other's waters, failed to produce a breakthrough but the two countries agreed to meet again to sort out the issue.

The director general of Pakistan Maritime Security Agency and the director general of Indian Coast Guard who held talks in New Delhi on July 11-14 decided that the next meeting would be held in Islamabad...

Valuable evidence collected by commission: India

NEW DELHI: Upset over the ruling of a Pakistani court in the Mumbai attacks case, India said on Tuesday that evidence collected by a Pakistani judicial commission here had evidential value to punish those involved. "Our belief is that the evidence collected by the commission is of evidential value," Home Secretary R.K. Singh told reporters here.

Mr Singh said that New Delhi was aware of the ruling of the Pakistani court and would seek a copy of it from the authorities there through Indian High Commission in Islamabad...

No chance of accord with Taliban: Crocker

NEW YORK, July 17: Ryan Crocker, the outgoing US Ambassador to Afghanistan, has said the United States will continue to fight the Pakistan-based Haqqani faction of Taliban until it leaves and expressed scepticism about reaching an agreement with Taliban in general.

In an interview with Philadelphia Inquirer, published on Tuesday, Mr Crocker, who has also served as envoy to Pakistan, maintained: "We will have to find ways to kill as many Haqqanis as we can."..
