12 killed in Orakzai sectarian attack

KOHAT, July 18: At least 12 people were killed and another was injured when a vehicle carrying passengers from Orakzai Agency to Kohat bazaar was blown up by an anti-tank mine in Tanga Pahar area on Wednesday, police said.

The pick-up coming from Sipah area of Lower Orakzai hit the mine when it entered Ustarzai area of Kohat at around 7.40am...

Tribal jirga backs vaccination ban

MIRAMSHAH, July 18: A grand jirga of tribal elders, tasked by the government to persuade militant groups to allow polio vaccination, informed the administration on Wednesday that the ban on immunisation in Waziristan would continue till drone attacks were stopped.

A source privy to the meeting told Dawn that in plain words the pro-government jirga had endorsed the ban imposed by a Taliban group on polio campaign in North Waziristan...

Accountability court issues notices to Sharifs

RAWALPINDI, July 18: An accountability court issued on Wednesday notices to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif and other members of the Sharif family to respond to an application filed by the National Accountability Bureau for reopening three corruption references against them.

Judge Chaudhry Abdul Haq observed that the Lahore High Court had already issued a stay order in these cases...

Nawaz for consultations with all parties

Qatar govt asked to extradite Saifur Rehman

ISLAMABAD, July 18: The Interior Ministry has written a letter to the Qatar government, seeking extradition of Saifur Rehman, former chairman of the Ehtesab Bureau, to Pakistan, a private news TV channel reported on Wednesday.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) had issued red warrants for Mr Rehman after he claimed he possessed evidence of President Asif Ali Zardari's Swiss accounts and Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf's involvement in the $10 billion power plant scam in 2009...

SC orders sacking of G-B police chief

Two Nato troops killed in east: Bomb destroys 22 Nato supply trucks in Afghanistan

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Afghanistan), July 18: A Taliban bomb attack on Wednesday destroyed 22 fuel tankers carrying supplies for Nato forces in Afghanistan, local officials said, as 12 Afghan soldiers and two Nato troops died in escalating militant attacks.

Hike in electricity tariff for Karachi

ISLAMABAD, July 18: Amid a sizeable increase in tariff for Karachi, the government on Wednesday decided to enhance supply of fuel to power plants in order to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity during Sahr and Iftar in the holy month of Ramazan.

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) approved Rs1.14 per unit and 52 paisa per unit increase in the tariff for Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) on account of expensive power generation during March and April, respectively...
