Errors in voter lists being removed: acting CEC: 'Commission prepared to hold general polls'

ISLAMABAD, July 22: Acting Chief Election Commissioner Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan has said that although the new computerised electoral rolls are not 100 per cent error-free, the discrepancies could be removed before the next general elections.

In a formal interaction with newsmen here on Sunday, a day before the swearing-in of Justice (retd) Fakhruddin G. Ebrahim as Chief Election Commissioner relieving him of the responsibility of acting CEC, Justice Jan said the commission had to rely on outsiders for enumeration and this resulted in some wrong entries in the electoral rolls...

Afghanistan summons Pak envoy over border shelling

KABUL, July 22: Afghanistan warned Pakistan on Sunday that any further cross-border shelling could significantly harm relations, just days after the leaders of the two countries met to talk peace.

Provincial spokesman Wasifullah Wasifi said more than 300 heavy artillery shells and rockets were fired allegedly from Pakistan into Dangam district of eastern Kunar province on Friday and Saturday, killing at least four people...

Nawaz asks US to 'reorient' its policy

ISLAMABAD, July 22: PML-N President Nawaz Sharif has urged the United States to 'reorient' its policies towards Pakistan with the objective of strengthening democracy and improving its economy.

"The US should reorient its policies towards Pakistan in a manner that the country's democratic institutions become stronger and its economy made less dependent on foreign aid," Mr Sharif said during a farewell call made by outgoing US Ambassador Cameron Munter here on Sunday, according to a party press release...

Official shot dead in Balochistan

QUETTA, July 22: A senior Food Department official was gunned down in Basima area of Washuk district on Sunday, officials said.

"Assistant food controller Abdul Qadir came under attack when he was on his way home in Basima," Washuk Deputy Commissioner Saeed Jamali said, adding the attackers sprayed a volley of bullets on Mr Qadir before fleeing the scene. Mr Qadir received multiple bullet wounds and died while being taken to hospital...
