ISAF Commander in Pakistan to discuss NATO supply

International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) Commander in Afghanistan General John Allen who arrived in Islamabad on Sunday evening has held a meeting with Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani in Rawalpindi. They discussed issues of reopening of NATO supplies and border situation. Allen is likely to hold talks with other senior Pakistani officials. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton Sunday contacted Pakistan’s Prime Minister Raja Pervaiz Ashraf over the telephone and congratulated him on becoming Pakistan’s prime minister. Clinton told the prime minister that she hoped Pak-US relations would improve further during his tenure. The US Secretary of State added that Pakistan and US were allies in the war against terror. Prime Minister Ashraf informed Hilary Clinton that Pakistan was adamant on rooting out terrorism. Raja Pervaiz Ashraf also thanked Hilary Clinton on congratulating him on becoming the prime minister.

'Smart bomb' to target cancer cells

A cancer ‘smart bomb’ has been invented by British scientists to boost the potency of drugs against the killer disease. The tiny device, being developed at the University of Edinburgh, carries minute amounts of the metal palladium encased in a harmless capsule directly to the site of deadly tumours to activate chemical treatments. Dr Asier Unciti-Broceta, of Edinburgh Cancer Research Centre, said: “Palladium is potentially very toxic but it is the most useful catalyst in any chemistry lab. We have developed a ‘ship’ to carry the palladium but not allow it to be freed to do harm. “Once in place, the palladium is able to trigger the activity of a drug. We can control what it does very, very specifically.” The device could bring hope to thousands of cancer victims and spare people the side effects of current chemotherapy ranging from hair loss to infertility. Professor Mark Bradley of Edinburgh University, who led the research, published in the journal Nature Protocol, said: “This technique should enable powerful drugs to be made directly where they are needed.”

Punjab Govt decides to blacklist protesting doctors

The Punjab government has decided to suspend protesting doctors and blacklist them for any government job. According to Punjab Health Department, the name of protesting doctors would be sent to Federal and Punjab Public Service Commission so that they would not be considered for any government job in the future. The sources said that the names of these doctors will also be provided the embassies of the Gulf States. It was further informed that the names of protesting doctors would also be provided to British College of Physician for criminal record. The Punjab Health Department has asked the senior doctors the public hospitals to report at 8:00am today (Monday) while Pakistan Army doctors will also perform duties at public hospitals from 8:00am. Meanwhile, Punjab Public Service Commission has provided a list of 1,000 new doctors who are seeking job to the Punjab Health Department.

Dual nationality case: SC to resume hearing today

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, Justice Jawad S Khawaja and Justice Khilji Arif will resume hearing of dual nationality case today. The apex court during previous hearing suspended the National Assembly membership of PPP MNA Zahid Iqbal, after his British nationality was proved while PML-N MNA Malik Jameel Awan confessed to have Dutch nationality. The Supreme Court has so far suspended membership of Farah Na Ispahani, Rehman Malik, Amna Buttar, Dr Ahmad Ali Shah and Akhlaq Ahmad in dual national case. A contempt of court proceeding against Attorney General Irfan Qadir and Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik will also be initiated for not implementing court orders in the same case.

Country cannot afford more damages: Hafiz Saeed

Addressing a convention in Karachi, Difa-e-Pakistan Council (DPC) leader and Jamaat-ud-Dawa Ameer Hafiz Muhammad Saeed said that rulers are relying only issuing statements due to their political interest. He said that Pakistan cannot afford more damages. Hafiz Saeed said that DPC would resist any step by government regarding reopening of the NATO supply. Maulana Samiul Haq, Asad Ullah Bhutto and other leadership of DPC also addressed the convention.

Nawaz Sharif to leave for Europe on July 4

Mian Nawaz Sharif will address party officials and workers in London on July 5. The PML chief will reach Germany on July 7 where he will address party’s organization officials. The PML-N chief will also meet government officials during his visit of England. He will reach London on July 5 at a time when President Asif Ali Zardari and Adviser on Interior Rehman Malik are also in the British capital.

Karachi: Target killing claims three more lives

According to details, some unidentified persons opened fire and shot dead a man in Sachal area of Karachi. The identity of the deceased is not yet known. Meanwhile, two men who were shot dead in a firing incident in Karimabad area have been identified as 35-year-old Noor Muhammad and Shakeel s/o Bashir. The dead bodies have been shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for autopsy. At least two people were also wounded in firing incidents in Ghareebabad and Bhitaiabad areas of the city.

Three-day gas shutdown for Punjab industries during July

According to Sui gas authorities, the gas cut for industries has been increased to provide extra gas to power houses to decrease electricity loadshedding. According to new notification, gas will be provided from July 3 to July 5 to industries in Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Multan, Bahawalpur and Islamabad where the gas will remain shut for the next three days. Meanwhile, gas will be provided from July 5 to July 8 to the industries in Lahore, Sahiwal and Sheikhupura while the gas will remain shut for the next three days. On the other hand, the industrial organisations of Faisalabad have convened a joint meeting on July 3 to chalk out their strategy against the government decision.

Sohail Abbas to lead Pakistan Olympic hockey squad

Penalty corner expert Sohail Abbas will lead Pakistan s hockey squad in the upcoming London Olympics, the only sport where the country harbours any realistic hopes of a medal in the Summer Games. The 35-year-old was retained as captain despite Pakistan s poor finish in last place at the Azlan Shah hockey event in May this year. The 20-man squad will be trimmed to 18 by the team management next week before Pakistan fly to London for the Games, which start on July 27. Pakistan s recent poor performance forced selectors to recall senior players Rehan Butt, Mohammad Waseem and Shakil Abbasi who featured in a rebel hockey league in India which threatened their places for Olympics. "We have included seniors so that the Pakistan team can benefit from their experience," said chief selector Hanif Khan. "We tried some juniors recently and now this squad for the Olympics is a combination of juniors and seniors." Three-times Olympic champions and with four world titles, Pakistan have slumped at international level after poor planning and with talent becoming increasingly scarce. They finished at their worst-ever eighth position in the last Olympics in Beijing four years ago, and then slumped to the 12th and last position in the 2010 World Cup in India. The team did win the Asian title in China in late 2010 however to secure direct qualification for the London Games and give a boost to confidence. "We have high hopes with the team," said Khan, a member of Pakistan s gold medal winning team in the 1986 Los Angeles Olympics. "If they finish on the victory podium it would be as good as a gold medal, if they finish between 4-6 it would be worth the hard work." Pakistan also won Olympic gold in 1960 and 1968 but their last Olympic medal in 1992 when they picked up bronze in Barcelona. Pakistan are in Group A along with Australia, Great Britain, Spain, Argentina and South Africa. Defending champions Germany are in Group B, which also includes Netherlands, South Korea, New Zealand, India and Belgium. Pakistan athletes will also compete in athletics, swimming and shooting through wild card entries, but they have no serious medal hopes in those sports. Squad: Sohail Abbas (captain), Imran Shah, Imran Butt, Mohammad Irfan, Mohammad Imran, Kashif Shah, Fareed Ahmed, Rashid Mahmood, Mohammad Rizwan junior, Mohammad Tauseeq, Waseem Ahmed, Mohammad Waqas, Umar Bhutta, Rehan Butt, Ali Shah, Mohammad Zubair, Haseem Khan, Shakil Abbasi, Mohammad Rizwan, Shafqat Rasool.

Sagan wins first stage of Tour de France

Liquigas rider Peter Sagan of Slovakia won the first stage proper of the Tour de France here on Sunday. Sagan beat Swiss yellow jersey holder Fabian Cancellara and Norwegian Edvald Boasson Hagen of Team Sky to claim his first Tour de France stage win. Cancellara holds on to the overall race lead.

Man in Afghan police uniform kills three NATO personnel

A man in an Afghan police uniform has killed three NATO personnel in the war-torn country s troubled south, the coalition said on Sunday, the latest so-called "green on blue" attack. The deaths take the toll this year in "green-on-blue" incidents -- in which Afghan forces turn their weapons against their Western allies -- to at least 26, in a total of 18 such incidents. In keeping with its usual policy, NATO s International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) gave no further details of the incident and did not reveal the nationality of the victims. "An individual wearing an Afghan National Civil Order Police uniform turned his weapon against International Security Assistance Force service members in southern Afghanistan today, killing three service members," ISAF said in a statement. The Afghan Civil Order Police was set up in 2006 as an elite riot control force. The attack comes nearly two weeks after three men in Afghan police uniforms killed a soldier with the US-led force, also in the south. An increasing number of Afghan troops have turned their weapons against NATO soldiers who are helping Kabul fight a decade-long insurgency by hardline Taliban Islamists. Some of the assaults are claimed by the Taliban, who say they have infiltrated the ranks of Afghan security forces, but many are attributed to cultural differences and antagonism between the allied forces. ISAF has taken several security measures in response to the shootings, including assigning "guardian angels" -- soldiers who watch over their comrades as they sleep. NATO has around 130,000 soldiers fighting alongside some 350,000 Afghan security personnel against the Taliban-led insurgency, but they are due to pull out of the country in 2014. The Western coalition is to hand over security to local forces by mid-2013 and will play a support role up to the final withdrawal by the end of the following year.

Iraq oil revenues lowest since February 2011

Iraq s revenues from oil, which account for the lion s share of the country s income, fell in June to their lowest level in 16 months because of rising local demand, an oil ministry spokesman said on Sunday. "We exported around 72 million barrels, at a rate of 2.403 million barrels per day (bpd), during June," spokesman Assem Jihad told AFP. He put revenues for the month at $6.453 billion, the lowest such figure since February 2011 when the country took in $6.064 billion in oil sales. "Increasing local needs pushed the ministry to allocate additional quantities of production to the local market," Jihad said, adding that "the reduction in revenues was linked with a drop in the price of oil." Oil prices have dipped dramatically since the start of the year -- after having averaged upwards of $110 per barrel in February, New York s main contract for August delivery closed at $84.96 a barrel on Friday. Iraq depends on oil sales for the vast majority of government income. The country currently produces upwards of three million bpd, and Oil Minister Abdelkarim al-Luaybi has said it plans to increase output and exports this year to 3.4 million bpd and 2.6 million bpd respectively.

England beat Australia by six wickets to win 2nd ODI

England beat Australia by six wickets to win the second one-day international (ODI) at The Oval here on Sunday and so take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. England, set 252 for victory, finished on 252 for four with 26 balls left. Ravi Bopara top-scored with 82 after opener Ian Bell had made 75. Earlier Australia, who won the toss, were held to 251 for seven after struggling against disciplined bowling despite opener Shane Watson s 66 and George Bailey s career-best 65. Fast bowler Steven Finn led an attack missing James Anderson because of a groin injury, with one for 36 in nine overs. If England complete a 5-0 clean sweep they will replace Australia at the top of the one-day international world rankings. The series continues with a day/night match in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Windies rack up second T20 win over Kiwis

West Indies notched up their second crushing Twenty20 victory over New Zealand in as many days here on Sunday. After winning the first shortened overs match by 56 runs on Saturday, West Indies again had explosive batsman Chris Gayle and spinner Sunil Narine to thank for a convincing 61-run win over the Kiwis. West Indies made 177 for five off their 20 overs with Gayle striking a fluent 53 off 39 balls, featuring three fours and four sixes, and Jonathan Charles and Dwayne Bravo chipping in with useful knocks of 36 and 35 not out respectively. New Zealand were then bowled out for 116 in the 18th over with Daniel Flynn top-scoring with 22 as Narine followed up on his 3-32 in Saturday s match with a startling 4-12 in four extremely tidy overs.

Spain on Sunday retained their European championship title in style, beating Italy 4-0 in the Ukrainian capital Kiev to become the first side to complete back-to-back wins in the competition s 52-year history. Manchester City s David Silva opened the scoring in the 14th minute, heading home a pinpoint cross from Barcelona s Cesc Fabregas, after a fired-up Spain, earlier accused of playing a "boring" possession game, came out all guns blazing. Jordi Alba made it two on 41 minutes after he ran onto a sublime through-ball from his new Barca team-mate Xavi Hernandez and slotted a left-foot shot past the advancing Gianluigi Buffon. Fernando Torres -- who scored in Spain s 1-0 Euro 2008 final win against Germany four years ago -- made it three with six minutes left while his Chelsea colleague Juan Mata made it four on 88 minutes. "La Furia Roja" are now the only side to have won three consecutive major titles, with European wins either side of their World Cup victory in 2010. Tens of thousands of people young and old thronged the streets of Rome and Madrid to watch the game on giant screens, with both historic capitals a sea of green, white and red Italian tricolors and red and yellow Spanish flags. But it was Spanish fans who erupted at the final whistle in scenes of wild celebration that brought unbridled joy to a nation struggling with recession. The final was the 31st match in three weeks of football involving 16 teams in Poland and Ukraine, which despite misgivings before the start of the tournament, has generally been considered to have gone well. Before the competition started, there were fears about the readiness of the eight match venues and other infrastructure as well as high travel and accommodation prices for fans, particularly in Ukraine. Racism was also a worry, amid claims that far-right gangs were rife in football grounds in both countries, while Ukraine also faced a boycott from European nations over the alleged mistreatment of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko. Some racist chanting from foreign fans and violent clashes between Poland and Russia fans were seen and organisers courted controversy at the last by inviting the controversial Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko to the final. But the worst fears have not materialised, allowing the focus to remain mostly on the pitch, with high-quality matches attracting record television viewing figures in Europe and around the world. UEFA president Michel Platini told reporters he felt proud of both co-hosts, while Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych said it had been an "honour" to stage the competition. "It seems to me that we ve succeeded," he was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency. "Even though the Polish and Ukrainian teams aren t playing in the final, one thing s clear: Poland and Ukraine have won Euro 2012," added Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski. Poland and Ukraine are hoping to reap the benefits from holding such a "mega-event", particularly in tourist revenues, with Euro 2012 helping to shatter myths of the former communist east European nations being cold and inhospitable. A recent survey of more than 1,000 foreign fans by independent pollsters PBS indicated that 73 percent said they would come back to Poland within three years, while 89 percent said they would recommend Warsaw to family and friends. Some even compared Euro 2012 to the ground-breaking recognition of the Solidarity trade union led by Lech Walesa in 1980 that triggered a wave of anti-communist sentiment and ultimately played a part in the collapse of the eastern bloc. The next competition will be held in four years  time in France.
