3 killed, 20 injured in Peru protest

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>At least three people were killed and 20 others were injured during clashes between security forces and demonstrators protesting a planned $4.8 billion gold mine by US-based Newmont in northern Peru.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>A 17-year-old was among those dead, and 15 people were also arrested at the Conga mining project, Cajamarca region prosecutor Esperanza Leon told RPP radio.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>More than 1,000 protesters threw stones at government offices in the town of Celendin, and police responded by firing tear gas and using their batons to disperse the crowd, local media reported.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>During the scuffle, two police officers were wounded by &quot;guns fired by protesters who were trying to take over Celendin,&quot; the interior ministry said in a statement. It accused the demonstrators of committing &quot;criminal acts.&quot;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Peruvian government declared a state of emergency in Cajamarca, suspending freedom of assembly, the inviolability of the home and freedom of movement. It also mobilized the military to support police operations.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Protesters say the Conga mining project will pollute the area&nbsp;s lakes and rivers, contaminating water supplies.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The demonstration came after Celendin Mayor Mauro Arteaga was said to have expressed support for the project.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Conga was approved in 2010 by former president Alan Garcia&nbsp;s government. His successor President Ollanta Humala had been a backer of the project but insists potential environmental impacts must be weighed.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The open-pit project, located some 3,700 meters (12,140 feet) above sea level, involves moving the water from four lagoons high in the Andes mountains into reservoirs the company would build.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Construction is due to begin in 2014.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Blast at Bangkok oil refinery triggers huge blaze

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>An explosion at an oil refinery in an industrial area of Bangkok sparked a massive fire early Wednesday, sending a thick column of smoke into the air that could be seen across the Thai capital.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>No one appeared to have been injured in the blaze, which began after a loud blast at around 7.30 am local time (0030 GMT), according to a spokeswoman for the refinery firm.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We are investigating the cause of fire and will inform the public immediately,&quot; said Chaveewan Kiatchokchaikul of Bangchak Petroleum, who said the fire had been brought under control.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;There is not much oil so people should not panic,&quot; said a local Bangkok fire fighter on Thai television.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Bangchak oil refinery, which employs around 600 people, is located in a large industrial estate in a sprawling suburb.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>It is among the country&nbsp;s biggest refineries and 120,000 barrels of oil are processed at the site every day, a company official told AFP.<br /><br />&nbsp;</p>


DCC approves NATO supply resumption after US apology: Kaira

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>Talking to the media, Federal Information Minister Qamar Zaman Kaira said it was in Pakistan&rsquo;s interest to facilitate US, NATO and ISAF forces in the transition process and in view of the larger interest of peace in Afghanistan and the region.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>He said that Pakistan would not charge any transit fees and would allow lethal cargo for Afghan security forces for the purpose of maintaining peace and stability in the region. The minister said that future relations with the US would be based on mutual interest and respect and the DCC would continue to be guided by parliament&rsquo;s recommendations. <br /><br />&nbsp;</p>


Rehman assures foolproof security to NATO trucks

NATO truckers welcome reopen of supply, demand security

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>NATO truckers also welcomed Pakistan&nbsp;s decision to reopen supply lines into Afghanistan but said they feared Taliban attacks, demanding security guarantees before the resumption.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Mir Mohammad Yousuf Shahwani, head of the largest oil tanker owners association in Pakistan, told AFP that supply trucks and tankers could be en route in &quot;days&quot; but insisted they needed protection first.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;It is a sudden decision but even then we can start supplies in days. The thing is, who will protect us,&quot; Shahwani said.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;We need security, we need protection. Taliban have killed dozens of our drivers and torched hundreds of vehicles,&quot; he added.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pakistani Taliban have carried out dozens of attacks, disrupting supplies for 130,000 US-led international troops fighting in Afghanistan, and have repeatedly warned of more if Pakistan reopened supply routes.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Pakistan closed its Afghan border crossings to NATO convoys on November 26 after botched US air strikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced that Pakistan was re-opening the border to NATO supplies and said the United States was &quot;sorry&quot; for the losses suffered by the Pakistani military.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Earlier, Pakistan&nbsp;s new prime minister acknowledged that continuing the seven-month blockade was negatively affecting relations with the United States and other NATO member states.<br />&nbsp;</p>


Pak-India foreign secretary level talks today

US to release $1.1b military aid to Pakistan: US official

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The United States will release about $1.1 billion to Pakistan&nbsp;s military as part of a deal that will see Islamabad lift a blockade on NATO supply convoys into Afghanistan, a US official said Tuesday.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The money, from a US &quot;coalition support fund&quot; designed to reimburse Pakistan for the cost of counter-insurgency operations, had been withheld due to tensions between the two countries and Islamabad&nbsp;s closure of the supply routes.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The coalition support fund is often the subject of wrangling between US and Pakistani officials, with Islamabad&nbsp;s claims often rejected and smaller sums approved by Washington for reimbursement.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The $1.1 billion that will be freed up under the border deal does not include large sums that Pakistan says it is owed, said the US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>&quot;This is the amount that has been approved and already gone through the process,&quot; the US official told AFP.<br />&nbsp;</p>


ISAF commander welcomes reopening of NATO supply

Punjab cuts medicine, uplift budget by 43pc

<p><br />About Rs 26 billion have been spent on the payment of salaries of doctors, vehicles and other facilities while Rs 1.10 billion were spent for Health Professional Allowance.</p><p><br />According to documents of Punjab Finance Department, Punjab government had decided to spend Rs 12.10 for provision of medicines, x-rays machines, operation theaters, purchase of other instruments and construction of new buildings during last fiscal year but only Rs 6.30 billion could be spent in this regard.</p><p><br />It also has been revealed in documents that Rs 26 billion were spent for the payment of salaries of doctors, paramedical staff and other facilities.</p><p><br />Apart from this, Rs 1.10 billion has been paid as health professional allowance under an agreement between doctors and the government of Punjab.</p><p><br />During current fiscal year, the Punjab government has allocated Rs 166 per capita for provision of medical facilities and other development schemes in accordance with the ratio of population while Rs 832 per capita have been allocated for non-development expenditures.</p>


DCC approves resumption of NATO supply

Karachi: Protesting teachers thrashed by police

<p><br />A large number of teachers were observing sit-in in front of Karachi Press Club for three days as they had not been issued offer letters since three years.</p><p><br />Earlier, police warned the protestors to avoid entering red zone of CM House but angry teachers carried on their journey. At this, security men mercilessly beat the innocent creature that was claiming for rights.</p><p><br />During this, ten teachers were arrested while one of them went unconscious and was shifted to civil hospital by the police mobile.</p><p><br />PST teachers pledged that they would continue their strike against the government until and unless their demands are fulfilled.</p>


CM responsible for patients deaths: Raja Riaz

Quetta, Peshawar doctors show solidarity with YDA

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>The patients at the hospitals in Quetta suffered a lot due to absence of the doctors.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The young doctors closed OPDs of Quetta&rsquo;s two main hospitals including Civil Hospital and Bolan Medical Complex to express solidarity with the young doctors in Punjab who are on strike.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The Quetta doctors had promised to continue the work despite their protest but they did not attend OPDs on the second day despite the notice taken by the Balochistan CM.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>More than one million patients come to get treatment from the two main hospitals of the city but the doctors continued to add public miseries due to their absence from duty.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>Meanwhile, provincial Doctors Association and Young Doctors Association Khyber-Pakhtunkhawa expressed solidarity with young doctors in Punjab.&nbsp;The doctors set up OPDs in lawn of the hospitals and examined the patients.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>They tied black ribbons on their arms and observed token protest against the arrests of doctors in Punjab.&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>The representatives of the doctors associations threatened to hold protest in all hospitals of the province if their demands were not net.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>On the other hand, the patients&rsquo; condition worsened due to scorching heat.<br /><br />&nbsp;</p>


Faisal Raza Abidi resigns as PPP Karachi president

<p>&nbsp;</p><p>However, party sources claim that he has been removed due to complaints received from local leadership of the party.</p><p><br />Abidi was made president of the Karachi division in November last year.</p><p><br />PPP Karachi division spokesperson, Kausar Amir said that Abidi had resigned because of health reasons and had also been admitted to the hospital.</p><p><br />Sources within the party have said that the local leadership had made many complaints against him for being &ldquo;inattentive&rdquo; and had not been giving time to the party and its workers.</p><p>Abidi had earlier contested from NA-253 against Haider Abbas Rizvi of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) during the 2008 elections.</p><p><br />He had been selected as the president of PPP&rsquo;s Karachi division after the elections but was removed after a year after complaints were received.</p><p><br />The PPP leader has been a part of the Central Executive Committee (CEC) since 2008 and member of Senate since 2009.<br />&nbsp;</p>
