Death toll from Beijing downpours rises to 37

Xinhua news agency said more victims of the downpours which battered much of the capital throughout Saturday had been discovered, revising up considerably the number of dead from ten.

The rainstorms led to the evacuation of more than 50,000 people from their homes in Beijing, mostly from the city s outlying mountainous districts, as up to 46 centimetres (18 inches) of rain lashed some areas, the agency added.

Xinhua quoted the Beijing municipal government as saying 25 of the victims had drowned, six had died when their houses collapsed, one was killed by a lightning strike and five had been electrocuted.

Twenty-two of the bodies have been identified, it added.

The agency had earlier reported the death toll at 10 but said it was expected to rise as numerous people, including rescue workers, were missing.

The government flood control headquarters told AFP damage assessments were ongoing.

Three bodies were recovered in Beijing s mountainous Fangshan region where several landslides were reported, China National Radio reported.

Up to 46 centimetres of rain fell in Fangshan district, the most rain to hit the city in a 14-hour period since records began in 1951, Xinhua said.

Numerous roads in the capital were submerged under up to a metre of water, while 500 outbound flights were cancelled and at least 80,000 passengers stranded.

On Sunday, clean-up crews were out repairing damage under largely sunny skies, while workers scrambled to drain up to one million cubic metres (35 million cubic feet) of water from the sewer system.

Despite the damage, the rain was largely welcomed in drought-prone northern China which has suffered from a lack of rain over the last decade.

More torrential rain was forecast in China s northeast and southwest, after at least 10 other people were killed since Friday.

Amla stars as Proteas push England to the brink

Hashim Amla s epic triple century that took more than 13 hours has South Africa poised to win the first test against England, with the hosts trailing by 150 runs on Sunday with six second-innings wickets in hand.

Amla s 311 from 529 balls lasted 790 minutes and contained 35 boundaries, and it broke AB de Villiers 278 not out as the highest test score by a South African batsman. It also has South Africa on the verge of leading 1-0 in the three-test series with one day s play left at The Oval.

England had slumped to 102-4 by stumps with Ravi Bopara 15 not out and Ian Bell unbeaten on 14. Vernon Philander had the best figures of 1-13.

Amla and Jacques Kallis (182 not out) put on a stand of 377 after captain Graeme Smith was dismissed for 131. Kallis hit a six and 23 fours in 326 balls on a torturous and wicketless day for England s bowlers.

Amla s innings was remarkable for its style and quality.

The South African played few false shots against an England attack whose discipline never wavered even after 13 hours in the field the run rate was only 3.37.

The only real chance Amla offered was on Friday evening, slashing at a delivery from Ravi Bopara only for England captain Andrew Strauss to miss a difficult catching opportunity at first slip when on 40.

Having already toiled for a day and a half, the torment continued for England s bowlers throughout Sunday. The morning session amounted to little more than South Africa ticking off a succession of landmarks.

The 150 partnership came off 309 balls and Amla reached his 200 off 392 deliveries when he pushed a delivery from Stuart Broad for three through cover.

Kallis then steered Bresnan to third man to reach his century his 43rd in tests from 227 balls.

Amla beat his previous best test score of 253 not out against India in Nagpur in 2010 when he drove Anderson for four early in the afternoon session. And he broke de Villiers record with a four off Tim Bresnan before Kallis strolled to 150 with a single from Graeme Swann.

Chances only came after South Africa started to accelerate toward a declaration.

Amla reached his triple century, off 515 balls, with a four off Bopara that just eluded the fielder at cover. Bopara then got a hand to a drive from Amla but couldn t hold the catch.

South Africa declared during the tea interval and claimed a wicket in the second over of the evening session, when Alastair Cook was caught behind for 0 off Philander.

The Oval crowd broke into a spontaneous ovation when news broke that cyclist Bradley Wiggins had become the first British winner of the Tour de France, but otherwise they had nothing to cheer about.

Jonathan Trott fell in the 11th over, caught behind off Dale Steyn, but England was handed a lifeline when Kevin Pietersen wafted a ball from Morne Morkel and was dropped by Kallis at second slip.

It was a short-lived reprieve for Pietersen, who batted like a man playing a one-day innings. After 17 balls, Morkel bowled him middle stump and he was out for 16.

Strauss played an equally senseless shot when he tried to sweep Imran Tahir and was caught off a top edge by Philander at square leg for 27. But Bopara and Bell survived to take the game into a fifth day.

Formula One: Alonso wins German Grand Prix

Fernando Alonso extended his lead in this year s Formula One drivers world championship on Sunday when he drove to a flawless victory for Ferrari in the German Grand Prix.

Driving with perfect judgement and great speed, the 30-year-old Spaniard started from pole position and dominated the 67-lap race in consummate style.

The Spaniard came home 3.7 seconds ahead of local hero, defending champion Sebastian Vettel of Red Bull, who was later handed a 20sec drive-through penalty for passing Jenson Button.

Vettel was handed the penalty for running off the track at a hairpin exit as he tried to pass McLaren s Button on the penultimate lap and dropped back to fifth place, leaving Button second at 6.949sec.

Finland s Kimi Raikkonen of Lotus completed the podium at 16.409sec.

Japan s Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber was fourth at 21.925 with Vettel slotting back into fifth at 23.732.

It was Alonso s third win this year after his triumphs in Malaysia and at the European Grand Prix, and it was also the 22nd consecutive race in which he had finished in the points for Ferrari.

He moves 34 points clear of Mark Webber in the title race with 154 points to the Australian s 120.

"We ll enjoy the win," said Alonso. "Starting on pole was the key factor because it was difficult to overtake and we were not the fastest but we kept the position."

Drawing a parallel with Europe s troubled economic situation, Alonso added: "I don t really know politics, but it is true that the situation is not great in Spain -- but a Spanish driver in an Italian car, designed by a Greek man is good to win here."

Button sidestepped the Vettel controversy and said: "I had a great race out there and it is nice to be fighting at the front again."

Vettel, whose Red Bull team were cleared to take part in the race after stewards decided to take no further action against them for reported engine mapping irregularities, said before the penalty was imposed: "The last thing you want to do is make contact. When we were side-by-side, I tried to give him enough room -- but it s difficult to see.

The 25-year-old said later, following his demotion: "I wasn t sure where he was, I couldn t see him in that moment, so decided to give enough space and went off line on the slippery paint and I was able to stay ahead and get past him.

"The only intention was not to crash and to give him enough room. I have respect for him and I didn t want to squeeze him."

Seven-time champion and German hero Michael Schumacher, 43, finished seventh for Mercedes ahead of Webber in the second Red Bull and another German, Nico Hulkenberg, who was ninth for Force India.

Another German, Nico Rosberg, in the second Mercedes, finished 10th.

Button s McLaren teammate Lewis Hamilton, who had hoped to mark his 100th Formula One race with a race to remember, ended up with one to forget as he collected a puncture after two laps and eventually had to retire.

A crash on the opening corner involving the Ferrari of Felipe Massa, Frenchman Romain Grosjean of Lotus and Brazilian Bruno Senna of Williams marred the start of the race but, surprisingly, there was no red flag following the incident.

As a result, a lot of debris was left on the circuit and led to Hamilton s puncture.

Golf: Els wins stunning Open after Scott collapses

Posted:

Ernie Els kept feeling that something special could happen at the British Open, and it did. But only after a collapse by Adam Scott that no one imagined.

Four shots ahead with four holes to play after eight straight holes with nothing worse than par Scott bogeyed them all and had to fight back tears on the 18th green Sunday as the magnitude of his meltdown began to sink in.

Els, who started the final round six shots behind, finished off a flawless back nine with a 15-foot birdie putt for a 2-under 68 that looked like it would do little more than lock up another runner-up finish at Royal Lytham & St. Annes. Instead, he wound up with his second British Open the other one was 10 years ago at Muirfield and fourth major championship at a stage in his career when it seemed as though his best golf was behind him.

The celebration was muted, unlike his other three majors.

"I m a little numb at the moment," Els said, who was on the practice green behind the clubhouse when he won. "First of all, I feel for Adam Scott. He s a great friend of mind. Obviously, we both wanted to win very badly. But you know, that s the nature of the beast. That s why we re out here. You win, you lose.

"It was my time for some reason."

The wind finally arrived off the Irish Sea and ushered in pure chaos a mental blunder by Tiger Woods that led to triple bogey on the sixth hole, a lost ball by Brandt Snedeker that took him out of contention and a topped shot that made former U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell look like an amateur.

Nothing was more stunning that what happened to Scott.

He failed to get up-and-down from a bunker on the 15th. With a wedge in his hand in the 16th fairway, he went 30 feet long and missed a 3-foot par putt. From the fairway on the 17th, he pulled his approach into thick grass left of the green. And on the final hole, he hit 3-wood near the face of a pot bunker.

Scott still had a chance to force extra holes with a strong shot into 7 feet on the 18th for par. The putt stayed left the entire way. His chin buckled, and it looked like he might start crying on the green. He composed himself and mouthed one word. "Wow."

"I had it in my hands with four to go," Scott said. "I managed to hit a poor shot on each of the closing four holes. Look, I played so beautifully for most of the week. I shouldn t let this bring me down."

Even so, it added another chapter to Australian heartbreak, most of that belonging to his idol, Greg Norman.
