Sharapova reaches 4th round of Wimbledon

Posted:

Maria Sharapova struggled with her serve again in windy conditions at Wimbledon and had to rally from a break down in the second set Friday to beat Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan 6-1, 6-4 and reach the fourth round.

The top-ranked Russian dominated the first set, breaking Hsieh three times and looked headed for an easy victory. But as the wind picked up in the second set, Sharapova s serving problems surfaced again. She double-faulted five times in the second, including one serve that bounced on her own side of the net, and trailed 4-2 before taking the last four games.

Sharapova is looking for her second Wimbledon title after losing last year s final to Petra Kvitova. She is coming off her first French Open title, which completed a career Grand Slam.

Posted:

Roger Federer overcame a two-set deficit Friday at Wimbledon to avoid his earliest Grand Slam exit since 2004.

The six-time champion found himself two points from defeat on six occasions but survived a tense fourth-set tiebreaker and beat Julien Benneteau in the third round, 4-6, 6-7 (3), 6-2, 7-6 (6), 6-1.

Federer also erased a two-set deficit to beat Juan Martin del Potro in this month s quarterfinals of the French Open. He has mounted eight comebacks from down 0-2 in his career.

Federer avoided the fate that befell rival Rafael Nadal 24 hours earlier on the same Centre Court. Nadal, a two-time champion, made his quickest exit from a major since 2005 when No. 100-ranked Lukas Rosol beat him in five sets Thursday.

England beat Australia by 15 runs to win the first one-day international at Lord s here on Friday and so take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England were indebted to Eoin Morgan s rapid 89 not out on his Middlesex home ground for taking them to 272 for five after losing the toss.

Australia, set 273 to win, finished on 257 for nine with captain Michael Clarke top-scoring with 61 and opener David Warner 56.

England s four seamers all took two wickets apiece, with a target of 21 off the last over proving too much for Australia s 10th wicket duo of Brett Lee (29 not out) and Xavier Doherty (six not out).

Victory meant England still had a chance of replacing their old rivals at the top of the one-day international rankings, although they would need a 5-0 series clean sweep to displace Australia at the summit.

3 blasts kill 8 in central Iraq

Posted:

Three bombs planted on motorcycles went off in quick succession near a market and police station in central Iraqi town Friday, killing at least eight people and wounding dozens more, officials said.

The blasts in Balad, located some 80 kilometers (50) miles north of Baghdad, were the latest in a wave of bombings and shootings has made June one of the deadliest months in Iraq since the last U.S. troops pulled out of the country in December.

Police said the bombs, which were hidden on motorbikes and went off within minutes of each other, also wounded at least 38 people.

"We were expecting this, because the terrorists want to ignite sedition among the Iraqi people," said Shiite cleric Murtada Faraj, 49, who was at Balad hospital caring for his three wounded nephews. Faraj said he had been about to leave the market when the explosions hit.

"Our town is Shiite, but it is surrounded by areas controlled by terrorists," he said.

Balad is a predominantly Shiite town in the majority Sunni province of Salahuddin. Shiites are a prime target of al-Qaida s offshoot in Iraq, which claimed responsibility earlier this month for attacks that killed 72 Shiite pilgrims headed to an annual religious ceremony in Baghdad.

Earlier Friday, gunmen in eastern Diyala province fatally shot four members of a local Sunni security militia know as Awakening Councils, which joined forces with the U.S. military to fight al-Qaida at the height of the insurgency. They are another frequent target for insurgents.

At least 220 people have been killed in June in a surge of bloodshed that officials and experts fear is part of insurgents efforts to reignite widespread violence along sectarian lines.

Nadal suffers shock Wimbledon defeat

Posted:

Rafael Nadal crashed to his worst Grand Slam defeat in seven years on Thursday when Czech journeyman Lukas Rosol, the world number 100, pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Wimbledon history.

Rosol, whose previous five visits to Wimbledon had ended in first round losses in qualifying, stunned the 2008 and 2010 champion, and 11-time Grand Slam title winner Nadal, 6-7 (9/11), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round.

It was a stunning upset as Nadal slumped to his earliest exit at a major since the same stage of the 2005 Wimbledon championship when he was beaten by Luxembourg s Gilles Muller.

It was also eerily similar to Nadal s stunning 2009 French Open fourth round loss to Robin Soderling when the Swede unleashed a barrage of destructive free-swinging tennis to destroy the Spanish star.

"It s like a miracle for me. So many emotions. He s a superstar, I am sorry for that. I played unbelievable. I guess Nadal is only human," said Rosol, who played the match at a breath-taking speed.

He is also the lowest-ranked player ever to beat Nadal at a Grand Slam and has now matched his best ever performance at a major, having reached the third round at the 2011 French Open.

Sharapova, Serena Williams win at Wimbledon

Posted:

On the verge of victory, Maria Sharapova briefly lost her bearings. Sharapova s old serving problems resurfaced Thursday at Wimbledon, costing her the second set before she recovered to beat dangerous Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-0.

The Court 1 match took two days and ended three minutes after Serena Williams concluded her second-round victory on Centre Court, beating qualifier Melinda Czink 6-1, 6-4.

The No. 1-ranked Sharapova saved five set points in the first set and led the second set 3-1 when play was halted Tuesday because of darkness. She lost the first two games when the match resumed, and double-faulted on her first three service points in the tiebreaker.

"It felt like two matches in a way," Sharapova said. "Today I wanted to start off really well because I knew I was up a break. Didn t go according to plan. Really served sloppy."

Sharapova underwent shoulder surgery in 2008 and has been prone to double-faults, but in the final set she had no trouble with her serve or anything else. She won 21 of the last 27 points and finished with just 11 unforced errors.

Pironkova, ranked 38th, beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon each of the past two years,

"If she played on grass 365 days a year, she d be top five probably," Sharapova said. "She has the perfect game for it."

But Sharapova s at her best in winner-take-all sets. She improved her record in three-set matches to 9-0 this year and 21-1 since the beginning of 2011.

She has won 14 consecutive matches, including the French Open this month to complete a career Grand Slam.

While Sharapova battled an erratic serve, with eight aces and 10 double-faults, four-time champion Serena Williams had no such trouble. She won 27 of 28 points on her first serve, including 10 aces, and never faced a break point. Czink twice whiffed on returns.

"I love my serve," Williams said, "and I love feeling good when I serve."

The sixth-seeded Williams could meet Sharapova in the final next week. A 17-year-old Sharapova defeated Williams for the Wimbledon title in 2004.

Others advancing included Americans Brian Baker, a qualifier ranked 126th, and No. 28-seeded Christina McHale.

Serbia: Mammoth graveyard discovered at coal mining site

Posted:

Serbian archaeologists have found a large graveyard of mammoths, recently discovered at an excavation site for coal.

They were found near the town Kostolac, some 100 km east of the capital Belgrade.

Heavy rain recently exposed the remains of what could be up to seven mammoths, not far from a site where other remains of the extinct animals had been uncovered in 2009.

Director of the Archaeological Project Viminacium, Miomir Korac, said that the discovery came as a complete surprise.

"On every 30 metres we found mammoth bones, so at the moment we have seven groups of mammoth bones, which are visible, that s very impressive number, don t forget that we are in process of excavation, we now have to dig down to 100 metres , so I am sure that we might find something else, besides mammoths, maybe some other beings which lived next to mammoths, this is fantastic," Korac told Reuters Television.

The archaeologists were first alerted to one set of mammoth remains that was damaged by mining machinery. But heavy rain later rinsed away the remains.

Korac s team will now use infrared screening to get a better idea of what lies below the surface and check if there are additional mammoth bones.

"That s why we have a group of experts from all scientific fields, we will do infra red scanning of all the areas, experts for paleobotany and Palaeozoic era will do their research, we have to find out, what type of climate was then. And then, maybe we will be able to determine why we have such a group of mammoths here so, so maybe we would be able to say what really and why it happened here," said Korac.

The location covers an area of some 20,000 square metres on what could have been an island in the Pannonian Sea.

Just a kilometre away, the first prehistoric skeleton was discovered in 2009. The bones belonged to a female mammoth, that was later named Vika, which is now one of the biggest scientific attractions in Serbia. Experts concluded that Vika drowned in swamp mud.

These particular creatures lived in the range of 100,000 years ago to as long as one million years ago, Serbian and international scientist estimate.

Experts believe that either some sort of catastrophe struck a herd, killing all the mammoths in the same place, or the first mammoths "graveyard" has indeed been found.

Turkey fortifies Syrian border; bomb hits Damascus

Posted:

Turkey deployed anti-aircraft guns, rocket launchers and other weapons along its border with Syria on Thursday, a military buildup that came as world powers showed new urgency to resolve the crisis before it ignites the region.

A bomb exploded in central Damascus near a busy market and the country s main justice complex, wounding at least three people, damaging cars in a parking lot and sending a black cloud rising above the Syrian capital. It was not clear who was behind the bombing.

Much of the violence that has gripped Syria since the uprising began in March 2011 has been sanctioned by the government of President Bashar Assad to crush dissent. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed.

But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several massive suicide attacks this year suggest al-Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray.

Assad told Iranian state TV Thursday that his country still supports him, and he warned that any intervention in Syria will cause a "domino" effect in the region. He has given similar warnings before, saying the entire Middle East will go up in flames if others meddle in his country.

Turkey, a former ally of Syria, has become one of the strongest critics of the Assad regime, and tensions between the two countries spiked following the downing of a Turkish military plane last week.

A small convoy of Turkish military trucks towing anti-aircraft guns entered a military outpost in the border village of Guvecci, which faces a Syrian military outpost, according to TRT television video.

Several anti-aircraft guns also have been deployed elsewhere along the border. Some trucks were seen carrying self-propelled multiple rocket launchers, the video showed.

Ties between Turkey and Syria have not been this low since the late 1990s, when the neighbors almost went to war. Tensions ran high in the 1980s and 1990s as Turkey developed military ties with Israel and Syria sheltered Turkish Kurd guerrilla leader Abdullah Ocalan.

Now, Turkey is hosting civilian opposition groups as well as hundreds of military defectors who are affiliated with the rebel Free Syrian Army.

Syria insists the Turkish military plane it shot down on June 22 had violated its airspace. Turkey says the jet had unintentionally strayed into Syria s airspace and was inside international airspace when it was brought down over the Mediterranean by Syria.

The search for two missing pilots continued in Syrian waters but hopes for their survival are dim, Turkish authorities said. The Turkish military said search teams have found some pieces of the plane as well as equipment belonging to the pilots.

Uzbekistan quits Russia-dominated security pact

Uzbekistan has suspended its participation in a Russia-dominated security pact of ex-Soviet nations, officials said Thursday, a move that reflected tensions inside the grouping.

The Collective Security Treaty Organization s spokesman, Vladimir Zainetdinov, said Thursday that it received a note from Uzbekistan declaring the suspension of its involvement in the seven-nation alliance. Zainetdinov wouldn t comment on possible motives behind the move, and Uzbek officials couldn t be reached for comment. The grouping also includes Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Russia has touted the CSTO as an ex-Soviet response to NATO, but the pact has remained amorphous and weakened by differences among its members. The pact members created a joint rapid reaction force that held sporadic maneuvers, but its numbers were small and its mission unclear.

Uzbekistan has refrained from contributing its troops to the force in an apparent reluctance to give Russia too much clout.

Uzbekistan left the grouping once before in 1999, but returned in 2006, reflecting its strongman ruler s often unpredictable decisions.

Uzbek President Islam Karimov was the country s Communist Party boss and stayed at its helm after the 1991 Soviet collapse. He has ruled the resource-rich, strategically-placed Central Asian nation of 27 million with an iron fist, tolerating no dissent. International rights groups list Uzbekistan among the world s most corrupt and repressive nations.

Over the past two decades, the 74-year old Karimov has maneuvered between Russia and the West, periodically shifting loyalties.

Karimov allowed the United States to use a major air base for the war in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, but he fell out with the U.S. and other Western nations after violently cracking down on a 2005 uprising in the city of Andijan and moved to boost ties with Moscow. In recent years, Karimov has sought to mend ties with the West while Uzbekistan s relations with Russia have grown colder.

Vladimir Zharikhin, a Moscow-based political expert studying the ex-Soviet nations, told the RIA Novosti news agency that Uzbekistan s decision had been prompted by "Karimov s intention to flirt with the U.S." He added that the Uzbek leader later may again lurch in the opposite direction.

Also under Karimov, Uzbekistan s ties with its Central Asian neighbors often have been strained amid a series of disputes over borders and water-sharing.

In Tajikistan, head of the parliamentary defense committee Amirkul Azimov criticized Uzbekistan s move.

"Uzbekistan s decision doesn t help collective security in the region," he was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti.

Azimov said that the planned withdrawal of NATO forces from Afghanistan would leave a "hornet s nest" threatening Central Asia.

Nikolai Fedoryak, a deputy chief of the defense and security committee in the upper house of the Russian parliament, also said that Uzbekistan may regret its decision after U.S. and other forces leave Afghanistan as scheduled by the end of 2014.

"It s regrettable that Uzbekistan made that move without a thorough analysis of its consequences," he told the Interfax news agency.
