21 kidnapped Levies men found dead

PESHAWAR, Dec 29: The Taliban have shot dead 21 Levies personnel who were kidnapped three days ago from Frontier Region Peshawar, officials said on Sunday.

“We found 21 bullet-riddled bodies of security personnel a short while ago in an uninhabited area,” local government official Naveed Akbar told AFP.

YouTube unblocked, but only briefly

ISLAMABAD, Dec 29: The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority shut down YouTube again on Saturday evening after opening the video-sharing website for about two hours.

The Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MoITT) directed the authority, which overlooks operations of all internet service providers in the country, to unblock the second most accessed website at 2:35pm. But Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf issued directives to the ministry to block the website again. It was blocked before 4:30pm.

Policewomen seek quota at academy

20 personnel kidnapped, two killed in raid on posts

Balochistan by-election: No female staff sent for women voters

ECP assured of full army cooperation

A trial without an end

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: Repeated and unending investigations, indifferent lawyers, a chaotic judicial system and a government that really didn’t care have all ensured that Benazir Bhutto murder trial is going nowhere.

Five different judges have headed the trial and the prosecution has filed eight separate challans since the proceeding started on February 29, 2008, which have also added to the delay as have the investigations by two different investigation teams.

Govt issues civil service guidelines

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: With the promotion of 33 officers to the highest BPS-22 on Wednesday, Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf also approved comprehensive guidelines for streamlining the civil service.

An official memorandum issued to this effect referred to the Dec 12 Supreme Court judgment on a petition filed by an official, Anita Turab, for protection of civil servants after a PPP candidate, Waheeda Shah, was caught on camera slapping a member of the polling staff during a by-election in Tando Mohammad Khan in March. In April 2010, the SC had demoted 54 federal secretaries promoted by then prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani in violation of rules and asked the government to re-frame promotion rules.

Ogra proposes big hike in CNG price

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: With the Farooq Naek committee unclear about resolution of crisis over price of compressed natural gas (CNG), the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) on Wednesday came up with three options that could increase consumer-end price of the fuel by up to Rs59 per kg (96 per cent) to maintain the 80 per cent parity with petrol proposed by petroleum ministry.

After the second meeting of the committee appointed by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the cabinet and led by Law Minister Naek, CNG sector’s representative Ghiyas Abdullah Paracha said the CNG station owners would be ‘constrained’ to involve the consumers and launch a protest if the dispute was not resolved by Dec 31.

KARACHI, Dec 26: Veteran politician and Naib Amir of Jamaat-i-Islami Prof Ghafoor Ahmad died here on Wednesday evening after a protracted illness. He was 85 and leaves behind three sons and six daughters.

His funeral prayer will be offered at the party’s Karachi office Idara Noor-i-Haq on Thursday at about 4.30pm. He will be laid to rest in Sakhi Hasan graveyard.

Ministries at loggerheads over gas supply plan

Zardari for utilising full potential: First wind power unit in Jhimpir opened

Committee calls for Hafeez Shaikh’s removal

Gas transmission and distribution: Private sector’s role proposed

ISLAMABAD, Dec 24: As gas scarcity spins out of control, the government has decided in principle to open up the transmission and distribution system to the private sector and change the pricing mechanism from biannual to quarterly and subsequently a monthly basis to facilitate the sale of imported gases.

To achieve the objective, the government is working on drastic changes to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) Ordinance and related rules, an official told Dawn on Monday. All the official stakeholders, including the ministry of petroleum, gas companies and Ogra, have been asked to submit proposals by Jan 4.

Four security personnel killed in Balochistan

QUETTA, Dec 24: Two personnel of the Frontier Corps and two of the Balochistan Constabulary and a Nato container driver were killed in acts of terror in Quetta, Mashkey and Hub town on Monday.

Official sources said the FC personnel were killed when they were attacked by unknown terrorists while they were coming out of the FC Fort in Mashkey. The two victims were identified as soldiers Saifullah and Zhazad.

Hoti calls for immediate steps to rein in militants

PESHAWAR, Dec 24: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ameer Haider Khan Hoti called upon the political leadership and the military on Monday to immediately put their heads together to find a permanent solution to the problem of militancy.

Otherwise, it will be criminal negligence,” he told lawmakers in the provincial assembly amid a sombre mood over the assassination of Senior Minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour in a suicide attack on Saturday.

Non-proliferation regime tightened

MQM seeks review of delimitation order

MQM leader Farooq Sattar filed two petitions through his counsel Farogh Naseem in the Supreme Court’s Karachi Registry, seeking review of its rulings about delimitation handed down on Nov 26 and Nov 28 during the hearing of a case pertaining to implementation of its order in a suo motu case relating to frequent target killings in Karachi.

Pakistan recognises Kosovo

ISLAMABAD, Dec 24: Pakistan on Monday officially recognised Kosovo as an independent state, almost five years after it declared independence from Serbia.

“The Government of Pakistan has decided to accord recognition to the Republic of Kosovo. The decision has been made in accordance with aspirations of the people of Kosovo,” the Foreign Office said in a statement.

Langah wants Tank, D.I. Khan in Seraiki province

ISLAMABAD, Dec 24: Pakistan Seraiki Party (PSP) president Taj Muhammad Langah presented before the Parliamentary Commission on New Provinces in Punjab on Monday voluminous documents in support of his demand for a new province with the name of ‘Seraikistan’ or ‘Seraiki’ comprising 23 districts -- 21 in Punjab and two in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Talking to Dawn after appearing before the commission, headed by PPP Senator Farhatullah Khan Babar, the PSP chief said he had called for including Tank and Dera Ismail Khan -- two Seraiki-speaking districts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – in the proposed new province.

Qadri wants electoral reforms, interim govt in three weeks

LAHORE, Dec 23: Tehrik-i-Minhajul Quran chief Dr Tahirul Qadri has given Islamabad three weeks to announce an independent interim government which could hold fair and transparent elections within 90 days or more if required for the sake of meeting all mandatory constitutional conditions/obligations to have an honest, sincere and trustworthy leadership to steer the country out of crises under a real democratic system.

He also asked the government to ensure representation of the judiciary, military and all other stakeholders in the process of constituting an honest interim set-up and avoid keeping the exercise limited to only two political parties (PPP and PML-N)...
