| Injured Nadal in US Open battle after Toronto, Cincinnati pullout Posted: TORONTO (AFP) - Rafael Nadal was forced to pull out of the Toronto and Cincinnati Masters with a wrist injury on Wednesday, just over three weeks out from the US Open where he is defending champion.The 28-year-old Spaniard said he had hurt his right wrist in training and needed up to three weeks rest. The US Open gets under way in New York on August 25.Unfortunately I injured my right wrist yesterday (Tuesday) during practice and after the tests I have undergone today in Spain, including an MRI, and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least 2-3 weeks, said the world number two.I'm extremely disappointed that I am unable to defend my titles and compete in Toronto and Cincinnati this year. I was looking forward to coming and playing again after my great results last year. | Drug-resistant malaria spreading fast in SE Asia Posted: PARIS (AFP) - Drug-resistant malaria parasites are now firmly established in border regions in four Southeast Asian countries, imperilling global efforts to control the disease, experts warned on Wednesday.Blood samples taken from 1,241 malaria patients found that parasites which are resistant to the frontline drug artemisinin have spread to border areas in western and northern Cambodia, eastern Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, they said.There also signs of emerging resistance in central Myanmar, southern Laos and northeastern Cambodia, but none in three African states -- Kenya, Nigeria and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) -- that were included in the sampling.The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, said doubling the course of antimalarial treatment, from three days to six, could help fight the resistance problem but time was short.It may still be possible to prevent the spread of artemisinin-resistant malaria parasites across Asia and then to Africa by eliminating them, but that window of opportunity is closing fast, said Nicholas White, a professor of tropical medicine at Oxford University, England.Conventional malaria control approaches won't be enough -- we will need to take more radical action and make this a global public health priority, without delay.Southeast Asia has been the source of growing worries that artemisinin is losing its edge as the weapon of choice against malaria.If so, it will be the third time in little more than half a century that a drug will have been blunted by parasites that became resistant to it -- a process that has claimed millions of lives.From the 1950s to the 1970s, parasites that were resistant to the drug chloroquine spread from Asia to Africa.Chloroquine was then replaced by sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine (SP), resistance to which emerged in western Cambodia and then spread to Africa.SP was followed by artemisinin, a drug derived by Chinese scientists from a herb called sweet wormwood.The artemisinin drugs are arguably the best anti-malarials we have ever had. We need to conserve them in areas where they are still working well, Elizabeth Ashley, a University of Oxford researcher who led the study, said in a press release issued by Britain's Wellcome Trust.The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends that for uncomplicated malaria involving the Plasmodium falciparum strain of parasite, artemisinin be used in a combination therapy, rather than a monotherapy, to get the best chance of eliminating all the parasites.When a therapy is stopped prematurely, or fails to kill all the parasites, the surviving parasites are able to mutate, handing on resistant genes.The study, carried out at 15 sites in Southeast Asia and Africa, entailed measuring blood samples to see the rate at which parasites were killed.A benchmark for elimination called the parasite clearance half-life ranged from 1.8 hours in the DRC to seven hours at the Thailand-Cambodia border, a hotspot for resistance that leapt to notoriety in 2005.Researchers in Kenya meanwhile have discovered antibodies to produce new vaccines targeting the most virulent form of malaria, in a potentially significant boost.For the study, published Wednesday in Science Translational Medicine magazine, scientists tested a library of proteins from Plasmodium falciparum with antibodies formed by the immune systems of a group of infected children in Kenya.The tests sought to determine which proteins elicited a response from the children's immune systems, revealing previously unidentified antigens as possible targets for vaccines.Resistance to malaria drugs is an increasing problem so vaccines are desperately needed to battle the Plasmodium falciparum parasite before it has a chance to make people sick, lead author Faith Osier from the Kenya Medical Research Institute said in a statement.This study presents us with a large number of new vaccine candidates that offer real hope for the future.Malaria killed an estimated 627,000 people in 2012, mostly among African children, according to the WHO.  |
| Oil prices fall despite strong US GDP, inventories data Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices fell Wednesday, putting the US benchmark futures contract within a whisper of $100 a barrel despite a larger-than-expected decline in US crude supplies and heightened geopolitical tensions.The main US contract, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) for September closed at $100.27 a barrel, down 70 cents from Tuesday's closing level on the New York Mercantile Exchange.In London, Brent North Sea crude for delivery in September dropped $1.21 to settle at $106.51 a barrel.Traders appeared to look past the headlines on better-than-expected official gross domestic product (GDP) data for the United States, the world's largest consumer of crude oil.The US economy grew at a robust annual rate of 4.0 percent in the second quarter, rebounding from a 2.1 percent slump in the first quarter linked to bad winter weather, the Commerce Department reported.The dollar was boosted by the GDP news, climbing to its highest level against the euro since November 12, at one euro for $1.3367.A stronger greenback tends to weigh on dollar-priced oil. But the Federal Reserve, after a two-day meeting, left unchanged its key interest rate, held at near-zero since late 2008, and stuck to its plan to raise the rate only in the second half of 2015.US GDP data was stronger than expected, but gives rise to the idea the Fed may raise interest rates somewhat sooner than previously estimated, supporting a stronger US dollar that may be limiting buying interest in WTI, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.The Department of Energy said that crude-oil stockpiles fell by 3.7 million barrels to 367.4 million barrels in the week ended July 25, slightly double the decrease expected.At the key oil hub in Cushing, Oklahoma, which serves as a reference for WTI, supplies dropped to 17.9 million barrels, their lowest level since November 2008. The draws in crude and Cushing should have been kind of bullish, said Gene McGillian of Tradition Energy, but the market shrugged that off.Meanwhile, traders also appeared to be ignoring the heightened tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East, said Tim Evans of Citi Futures.Brent supplies remain at risk from violence in Libya and Iraq, and sanctions against Russia, but the market is remaining calm in the face of it, suggesting ample current supplies, he said.  |
| Dollar boosted by strong US growth Posted: NEW YORK (AFP) - The dollar pushed higher against other major currencies Wednesday helped by a stronger-than-expected initial estimate for second-quarter US economic growth.The Commerce Department reported the economy rebounded to a 4.0 percent growth pace in the April-June period after the sharp contraction of the first quarter, caused largely by extremely severe winter weather across most of the eastern half of the country.That sent the dollar up to $133.67 per euro, its highest level since November, before settling at $1.3395.It also jumped to 103.09 yen, and to $1.6890 per pound, before slightly paring those gains.Hours after the economic growth report the Federal Reserve issued a fresh monetary policy statement that, as expected, made no fundamental changes to its course on tapering the stimulus and held the federal funds rate at its near-zero level. The Fed expressed continued concern about weaknesses in the labor market, but in a slight change in language it acknowledged the rise in inflation, but saw no major threat.Jens Nordvig of Nomura said the Fed's statement suggests possible changes to policy that would be bullish for the dollar if jobs data strengthens and inflation picks up as expected in the coming months.As we get closer and closer to Fed targets, we are likely to trigger a change in Fed tone over the next three months, he said.  |
| South Africa's Kallis ends international career Posted: JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis on Wednesday announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket.The 38-year-old, South Africa's all-time leading Test scorer with 13,174 runs, had already brought the curtain down on his Test career in December.His decision means he will no longer be available for the Proteas' one day and Twenty20 sides and rules him out of taking part in next year's World Cup.The former Middlesex and Glamorgan star's last international outing was the recent 2-1 one day series win in Sri Lanka.I realized in Sri Lanka that my dream of playing in a World Cup was a bridge too far, Kallis said.I just knew on that tour that I was done. The squad that was in Sri Lanka is an amazing one and I believe they have a good chance of bringing the trophy home in March.I would like to thank Cricket South Africa, the team, the team sponsors, my sponsors, the fans and all the people who have been involved in my career. | India's Pankaj Singh sets unwanted record Posted: SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) - India seamer Pankaj Singh took possession Wednesday of a record he would rather not have broken when he recorded the most expensive match figures by a Test debutant without a wicket.The 29-year-old 6ft 6in paceman finished with a match haul of none for 179 after England declared their second innings on 205 for four in the ongoing third Test at Southampton.That saw Singh surpass the previous worst wicketless debut return of none for 164 by Pakistan's Sohail Khan against Sri Lanka in Karachi in 2009.It might be one of cricket's more enduring cliches but Singh, in for the injured Ishant Sharma, really did bowl better than his figures suggested.He was especially unlucky during a first-innings return of none for 146 in 37 overs when he had England captain Alastair Cook dropped on 15 in the slips by Ravindra Jadeja, with the left-handed opener going on to make 95.Singh was also unfortunate to see Ian Bell, then on nought, survive a confident lbw appeal after the Rajasthan seamer produced a superb late swinging delivery that rapped the batsman's pad.Unfortunately for Singh, India's objections to the Decision Review System being used this series meant he had no way of overturning the not out verdict.To make matters worse for India, Bell went on to make 156 -- his first hundred in 20 Test innings -- as England piled on the runs in a total of 569 for seven declared.One consolation for Singh is that the worst debut Test innings figures still belong to Australia leg-spinner Bryce McGain.In what proved to be his only Test, McGain was smashed for 149 in 18 wicketless overs as South Africa made 651 all out at Cape Town in 2009 before going on to win by an innings and 20 runs.  |
| India in a spin as England eye victory Posted: SOUTHAMPTON (AFP) - England were in sight of their first win in 11 Tests as they closed in on a series-levelling victory against India at Southampton on Wednesday.India were 112 for four, still needing a further 333 runs to make what would be a new record 445 to win, at stumps on the fourth day of the third Test.Renowned for their ability to play spin, India lost three wickets to Moeen Ali and Joe Root -- both primarily batsmen and regarded as 'part-time' off-break bowlers.At stumps, Ajinkya Rahane was 18 not out and Rohit Sharma, dropped on five, six not out.The most any side has made in the fourth innings to win a Test is the 418 for seven by the West Indies against Australia at St John's in 2002/03.There was one concerning moment for England after play ended when paceman James Anderson, celebrating his 32nd birthday Wednesday, appeared to have words with Rahane before Australian umpire Rod Tucker intervened in a bid to calm tempers.Anderson is already facing disciplinary action by the International Cricket Council following his bust-up with India's Ravindra Jadeja during the drawn first Test at Trent Bridge and could be banned from the rest of this series if a teleconference hearing on Friday goes against him.England bowling coach David Saker praised Ali who has now taken 11 wickets this series.Moeen's getting better and better the more he bowls, he's working very hard at it and getting results, the Australian told Sky Sports.Meanwhile Saker, himself a former first-class seamer with Victoria and Tasmania, was delighted by the way England had bounced back from a humbling 95-run second Test defeat at Lord's that put India 1-0 up in the five-match series.It's been a good Test for bat and ball so far. The impressive thing has been the players' attitude -- they've not blamed anything, they've got stuck in. Jimmy has got back to his magnificent control.After Anderson took the two wickets needed to wrap up India's first innings, England captain Alastair Cook opted against enforcing the follow-on and England made a brisk 205 for four before Cook declared.The last thing India needed now was a run out but that was exactly what they got.Shikhar Dhawan clipped the ball onto the onside but Murali Vijay (12) just failed to beat Stuart Broad's underarm throw from short midwicket.And 26 for one became 29 for two when Ali struck second ball to dismiss Cheteshwar Pujara (two) with the aid of a sharp slip catch by Chris Jordan.After India had started to rebuild, Cook's decision to bring on Root proved inspired when he dismissed the well-set Dhawan for 37.Root produced a classic off-break which turned away from the left-hander and found the outside edge, with Jordan holding another smart slip catch. Ali, reprimanded by the International Cricket Council for wearing 'Save Gaza' and 'Free Palestine' wristbands earlier in this match, then found himself centre stage again for his bowling.He produced a ball that went straight on with the arm and the struggling Virat Kohli (28) pushed hard, with England debutant wicketkeeper Jos Buttler holding the outside edge at the second attempt.India were now 89 for four on another sunny day ideal for batting and on an essentially good pitch.And they would have been 102 for five had Anderson held a low but catchable return chance off Sharma.India, 323 for eight overnight in reply to England's first innings 569 for seven declared, were dismissed for 330.Anderson finished with five for 53 in 26.1 overs -- the 16th time in 97 Tests he had taken five wickets in an innings.England then got the quick runs they wanted, with Cook sweeping left-arm spinner Jadeja for four to complete his second fifty of the match.It was the first time left-handed opener Cook, who made 95 in the first innings, had scored two fifties in a Test since his 96 and 106 against Sri Lanka at Lord's in 2011.Root, playing exactly the innings England required, was eventually bowled by Jadeja for 56 off just 41 balls, with Cook declaring when he himself was 70 not out.  |

In a statement issued from London, he said that the government should take every step to protect citizens’ lives and properties, adding that the security arrangements must be ensured.Altaf Hussain condoled with the families of the deceased and said MQM members are with the families in the time of sorrow and sadness.Earlier, at least twelve people drowned as sea waves hit the Sea View area of Karachi on Wednesday. The Eid celebration soon turned into mourning but the city administration got itself off the hook by merely placing ‘awareness banners’ at the site.Thousands of visitors take to the Sea View area every year in Eid for leisure and a little carelessness can prove fatal. Sea waves drowned nine people who had come at the site for leisure as part of Eid celebration.Rescue officials arrived at the site but it was too late already. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifton Doctor Asad said that banners cautioning the tourists to take safety measure have been placed at Sea View but the tourists often ignore it.Among the dead is also 14-year-old Mazhar whose uncle said that he had gone to the sea along with friends for leisure.  |
| White House condemns Gaza school attack Posted: WASHINGTON (Dunya News/AFP) - The White House on Wednesday condemned the shelling of a UN-run school in Gaza where displaced Palestinians were sheltering from an assault by Israeli forces on Hamas fighters.The United States condemns the shelling of a UNRWA school in Gaza, which reportedly killed and injured innocent Palestinians, including children, and UN humanitarian workers, National Security Council spokeswoman Bernadette Meehan said.The school in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, which was sheltering more than 3,000 displaced people, came under attack from Israeli tank shells at dawn Wednesday. Sixteen people were killed.It is the second time in a week that a UN school housing refugees has been hit.UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called the strike unjustifiable.Meehan said Washington was extremely concerned that thousands of internally displaced Palestinians who have been called on by the Israeli military to evacuate their homes are not safe in UN designated shelters in Gaza.We also condemn those responsible for hiding weapons in United Nations facilities in Gaza, she said. All of these actions, and similar ones earlier in the conflict, are inconsistent with the UNs neutrality. This violence underscores the need to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible.  |
| Karachi: Four injured as result of explosion in vehicle Posted: KARACHI (Dunya News) – At least four people were injured as result of explosion in a vehicle at Nazimabad Dou Number area of Karachi on Wednesday, Dunya News reported.Police took the injured into custody on suspicion.The explosion in a vehicle resulted in injury of four people. The police initially termed it a cylinder blast but the bomb disposal squad after its investigation declared it was result of explosives inside the vehicle.Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Central, Muqaddas Haidaer said that the explosion was result of cracker explosives in the vehicle, adding that all four individuals traveling in the said car have been taken into custody.The investigation is ongoing.On the other hand, the bursting of a vehicle’s tyre in front of Capri Cinema sparked a sense of fear in the area. One person was slightly injured in the incident.  |
| Israel attacked Gaza school despite prior communication: UN chief Posted: SAN JOSE (Dunya News/AFP) - UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned an Israeli strike on a Gaza school that killed 16 people as unjustifiable Wednesday, calling for those responsible to be held to account.This morning a UN school sheltering thousands of Palestinian families suffered a reprehensible attack, Ban said during a visit to Costa Rica.It is unjustifiable, and demands accountability and justice.The school in the Jabaliya refugee camp in northern Gaza, which was sheltering more than 3,000 homeless people, came under attack from Israeli tank shells at dawn Wednesday.It is the second time in a week that a UN school housing refugees has been hit.Ban said the Israeli military of ignoring repeated communications on the location of the school.I want to make it clear that the exact location of this elementary school has been communicated to the Israeli military authorities 17 times, as recently as last night, just a few hours before this attack, he said.They are aware of the coordinates and exact location of where these people are.Costa Rican President Luis Guillermo Solis meanwhile joined international calls for an end to the bloodshed.We want the immediate establishment of a UN-monitored ceasefire to enable an escape from this bloody vortex, which is an offense to humanity, he said.  |
| Posted: KARACHI (Dunya News) – At least eleven people drowned as sea waves hit the Sea View area of Karachi on Wednesday. The Eid celebration soon turned into mourning but the city administration got itself off the hook by merely placing ‘awareness banners’ at the site, Dunya News reported.Thousands of visitors take to the Sea View area every year in Eid for leisure and a little carelessness can prove fatal. Sea waves drowned nine people who had come at the site for leisure as part of Eid celebration.Rescue officials arrived at the site but it was too late already. Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifton Doctor Asad said that banners cautioning the tourists to take safety measure have been placed at Sea View but the tourists often ignore it.Among the dead is also 14-year-old Mazhar whose uncle said that he had gone to the sea along with friends for leisure.  |
| World Cup 'a bridge too far' for Kallis Posted: JOHANNESBURG (AFP) - Jacques Kallis acknowledged on Wednesday that his dream of playing in next year's Cricket World Cup was a bridge too far.Kallis, 38, scored just five runs in three innings in a recent one-day international series in Sri LankaI just knew on that tour that I was done, Kallis said in a statement. The squad that was in Sri Lanka is an amazing one and I believe they have a good chance of bringing the trophy home in March.It always seemed a long shot for Kallis to remain competitive through to the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next February and March.He surprised many when he announced on Christmas Day last year that he was retiring from Test cricket after the second and final Test against India, starting in Durban the next day.He went out on a high, scoring a century that helped South Africa win the match and the series.He said at the time that his one remaining ambition - having helped South Africa to the number one ranking in Tests, including series wins in both England and Australia - was to be part of a World Cup-winning side.But a lack of cricket was always likely to be a problem. He played in just one domestic Twenty20 match in South Africa after his final Test and then appeared in only eight out of 16 Twenty20 matches for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League.He was unable to play in South Africa's only warm-up match in Sri Lanka after suffering a back spasm, so was short of match practice when he made a second-ball duck in the first one-day international in Colombo.Innings of one and four followed. He was unable to bowl in any of the matches because of his back problem.There could hardly have been a greater contrast between his exit from Test cricket, when he was carried aloft by team-mates on a lap of honour, and his final international appearance at a wind-swept Hambantota in southern Sri Lanka when he was leg before wicket to left-arm spinner Rangana Herath after labouring to four runs off ten balls.But he finished his one-day career with an outstanding record. In 328 matches he scored 11 579 runs at an average of 44.36, with 17 centuries and 86 fifties. He took 273 wickets at an average of 31.79, conceding only 4.84 runs an over. He was man of the match on 32 occasions.South African one-day captain AB de Villiers said Kallis' experience and tactical knowledge would be missed.His value and statistics on the field speak volumes, but his presence in the change room and willingness to teach the youngsters was immense, said De Villiers.He has played a big role personally for me since making my debut for South Africa in 2004, and is a huge loss for South African cricket.It's unfortunate that he won't be making the journey with us to the World Cup but we will definitely carry his resilience and professionalism with us out on the field.Test captain Hashim Amla said Kallis was a legend.Sportsmen like him only come around once every five decades, said Amla.He is an astute professional who always gave one hundred percent for his country and I believe a lot of youngsters coming up can learn a lot from the way he shaped his career.He will be sorely missed in the dressing room, and in the slips where he was a trademark figure. It has been a pleasure to have shared the crease with him on a number of occasions and I wish him well for the future. He has earned his break.Kallis was sometimes criticised for scoring too slowly in one-day games. His batting strike rate of 72.89 was relatively modest but he was respected by his team-mates as an excellent judge of the tempo required to win a match. When Kallis scored runs, South Africa usually won.Kallis played in 162 Test matches, scoring 13 289 runs at an average of 55.37 and took 292 wickets at 32.65. He is the only player in history to score more than 10,000 runs and take more than 250 wickets in both formats of the international game.He played in 25 Twenty20 internationals, scoring 666 runs (average 35.05) and taking 12 wickets at 27.75.He will continue to play Twenty20 cricket, saying he intends to honour contracts with the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and the Sydney Thunder in Australia's Big Bash.  |
