Footprints: Myths of Heroes

Reema Abbasi

A desperate nation is often keen on pantheons of martyrs. Chaudhary Aslam, the slain police strongman who was crucial part of Karachi’s almost mythical Operation Clean-Up, is proof of our collective despair.

Known as Encounter Specialist, Aslam’s tainted past from the 1990s, and his stint behind bars, was airbrushed into a portrait of a hero at his time of death. But while the media served up eulogies for him, many homes rejoiced in the cop’s payback time.

Football: Robben sorry for World Cup dive, but insists penalty was right

Posted:

FORTALEZA (AFP) - Dutch striker Arjen Robben on Sunday apologized for diving in a bid to get a penalty against Mexico but insisted he did not fake the foul that led to his side's winning penalty kick.Mexico's coach Miguel Herrera launched a furious attack on match referee Pedro Proenca for giving the injury time penalty that Jan-Klaas Huntelaar hit home to seal a 2-1 comeback victory.Robben was at the centre of both incidents in the World Cup last-16 clash in Fortaleza.I really have to say and at the same time apologise in the first half I took a dive and I really shouldn't do that, Robben told Dutch broadcaster NOS as he celebrated the victory. That was a stupid, stupid thing to do but sometimes you're expecting to be struck and then they pull their leg away at the last minute. But the Dutch striker insisted Proenca was right to point to the penalty spot after he was challenged by Mexico's veteran captain Rafael Marquez. I was fouled, he said.Mexico had been leading until the 88th minute when Wesley Sneijder scored and then Huntelaar put away the penalty. And Herrera said referee Proenca should take no more part in the World Cup.The determining factor was the man with the whistle. He put us of the World Cup, he said.Although the first goal was down to our mistake, we had the chance to reconsider during the break before extra time, but at the end when the referee invents a penalty you go out of the World Cup.At the very least they can look at this and this gentleman ought to be going home like us.Herrera claimed his side had been the victim of poor refereeing in three of their four games in Brazil and a European referee should never have been allocated the game in the first place.Out of four matches, we had three where the referee was disastrous.I don't understand why they had someone from the same confederation. Why not an African, Asian or South American referee? All the doubtful decisions went against Mexico.Giovani dos Santos' strike early in the second-half appeared to have Mexico on course for their first quarter-final appearance at a World Cup on foreign soil. The Dutch goals stunned the Mexicans however and Herrera admitted his side had lacked experience in how to see the game out.Maybe we were missing what teams like Argentina, Uruguay and those with experience of winning do.We had four minutes to go plus stoppage time and we should have put the ball in the corner, do what other teams do and perhaps we would have been faced with a different result.Dutch boss Louis van Gaal admitted that cooling breaks offered to the players for the first time in a World Cup match after half an hour of each half allowed him to have a greater influence on the game.It is true it helps having these breaks because first I had switched to 4-3-3 and we created a lot opportunities, (Guillermo) Ochoa had one great save in particular. After that I moved to plan B and I did that in the cooling break. That is a clever way of benefiting from these breaks. The Manchester United manager was vindicated in his substitutions as he surprisingly replaced captain Robin van Persie whilst in need of a goal to bring on Huntelaar. And van Gaal insisted he was not afraid to remove his star players for the benefit of the team.Van Persie's change was a tactical substitution and you have to remember that before the World Cup he was just recovering from an injury so it is difficult for him to keep going.I am a coach that wants to win so when I have to I will substitute players.

Football: Ten-man Costa Rica stun Greece in penalty shoot-out

Posted:

RECIFE (AFP) - Costa Rica goalkeeper Keylor Navas claimed man-of-the match honours as his side sank Greece in a penalty shootout to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time and a clash with the Netherlands.Reduced to 10 men in the second half, Costa Rica still seemed to be on course for an upset victory until Sokratis Papastathopoulos made the score 1-1 in injury time to extend the battle.Navas blocked a string of shots in the game and made a superb one-handed save of Fanis Gekas's penalty in the shootout to set up the 5-3 victory. Captain Bryan Ruiz scored in the 52nd minute to give the central Americans a 1-0 lead at Arena Pernambuco. But defender Oscar Duarte was ordered off for a second bookable offence shortly after and Greece poured forward looking for an equaliser. They provided the late drama when Papastathopoulos pounced on the rebound from Gekas's strike in the first minute of added-on time to slam it past Navas. But it was the only shot the Costa Rica goalkeeper missed all night and he was overwhelmingly voted man of the match.Greece spurned several chances to win the game in extra time against the tiring Costa Ricans. Those misses proved costly for Fernando Santos's men in the penalty shoot-out.With Costa Rica leading 4-3 after Joel Campbell rolled the ball past Orestis Karnezis, Gekas saw his chance to pull the Greeks level pushed away by Navas.Costa Rica secured their first ever appearance in the last eight on what is only their fourth finals appearance when Michael Umana stepped up to beat Karnezis from the spot. The Costa Ricans claimed another European scalp with the win, having beaten Italy 1-0 and drawn with England 0-0 in Group D.Costa Rica started brightly, but early offerings by Christian Bolanos and Ruiz, set up by Campbell after he had dispossessed a Greek defender, came to nothing. The Central Americans came close just before the quarter-hour when Ruiz set up Bolanos to the left of goal but his drive rose above the hands of Karnezis.Greece, appearing in the last 16 for the first time, spurned their best chance of the half on 37 minutes.Dimitrios Salpingidis had ghosted in at the back post to connect with a cross that had been whipped in from the left, but his first-timer saw a flailing Navas to turn the ball to safety for a corner.Greece's positive end to the half was in stark contrast to a terrible start to the second. An innocuous-looking attack launched by Campbell on the left saw Bolanos set up Ruiz to sidefoot a low shot past the static Karnezis, whose view appeared blocked by Papastathopoulos.Urgency was injected into the pace of the game immediately, but after Kostas Mitroglou replaced fellow striker Andreas Samaris, the Greeks were given a boost when Duarte was given a second yellow card for a wild lunge on Jose Cholevas.Santos made a series of changes late in the game and the arrival of Gekas for Salpingidis would prove crucial. In the first minute of injury time Gekas pounced on a loose ball in the area and when Navas blocked his shot on the turn Papastathopoulos slammed home the rebound home to send the Greeks wild.Navas had to look smart two minutes later when Mitroglou's glancing header forced him into a spectacular one-handed save before the whistle blew to signal extra-time.The leveller stunned an already tiring Costa Rica, who did well to survive a Greek onslaught in extra time.

Football: Huntelaar sends Dutch into World Cup last eight

Posted:

FORTALEZA (AFP) - Netherlands scored twice in the dying minutes through Wesley Sneijder and a Klaas Jan Huntelaar penalty to pull off a remarkable 2-1 victory over Mexico and move into the World Cup quarter-finals on Sunday. In a match conditioned by the baking heat and humidity of Fortaleza, Giovani dos Santos looked to have Mexico on the way to their first quarter-final appearance on foreign soil when he struck a brilliant shot to open the score three minutes into the second-half.Sneijder levelled with a thumping volley from the edge of the area two minutes from time, before Huntelaar converted from the spot in stoppage time after Mexicos captain Rafael Marquez upended Arjen Robben.Louis van Gaals men will now face Costa Rica or Greece in the last eight in Salvador on Saturday. The players showed they had faith and belief until the very end, said Van Gaal. The humidity was not in our favour so when you see that until the very last minute we were fresher and fitter than the Mexicans that is a big compliment to my players. Not only did they have belief but physically they prepared so well to play this match. That of course gives us enormous confidence going forward.Mexico boss Miguel Herrera had a very different view of events as he lambasted Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca for pointing to the spot in the fourth minute of stoppage time. The determinaning factor was the man with the whistle. He put us of the World Cup, he said.Although the first goal was down to our mistake, we had the chance to reconsider during the break before extra time, but at the end when the referee invents a penalty you go out of the World Cup.At the very least they can look at this and this referee ought to be going home like us.The Netherlands were disrupted by an early injury to Nigel de Jong as he hobbled off to be replaced by Bruno Martins Indi.Mexicos Hector Herrera then had the clearest opening of the first half as he collected Oribe Peraltas pass on the edge of the area and cut inside before dragging a right-foot shot inches wide. Both sides were handed the chance to cool off for three minutes at the half-hour mark for the first time at a World Cup due to the searing temperatures.Cillessen made a fine stop to prevent dos Santos opening the scoring with a low effort. However, the Netherlands were left aggrieved just a minute before the break when Robben appeared to have been clipped by Hector Moreno inside the area.Mexico got off to a flying start in the second-half as Dos Santos held off a challenge from Daley Blind to thump home his first international goal in a competitive match for two years from 25 yards.Peralta nearly made it 2-0 eight minutes later with a curling effort that Cillessen did well to claim at the first attempt.Moments later it was Guillermo Ochoa -- hero of Mexicos 0-0 draw with Brazil -- who made an incredible stop to prevent Stefan de Vrij levelling as he turned the defenders volley onto the post from point-blank range.Sneijder then saw a deflected effort fly inches past as the Netherlands went in search of an equaliser.Ochoa came to his sides rescue again 17 minutes from time when Robben escaped the clutches of Marquez, but saw his low effort turned behind by the Mexican stopper.Dutch boss Louis van Gaal then surprisingly replaced van Persie with Huntelaar. However, his decision proved inspired as firstly Huntelaar turned Robbens corner in the direction of the lurking Sneijder to power home from the edge of the box on.And after Robben was adjudged to have been clipped by Marquez in stoppage time, the Schalke striker coolly stroked home the penalty to eliminate Mexico at the last 16 stage for a sixth consecutive World Cup.

Golf: Rose wins National for first title since US Open

Posted:

BETHESDA (AFP) - Britain's Justin Rose won for the first time since capturing last year's US Open, parring the first playoff hole to defeat Shawn Stefani and capture the $6.5 million US PGA National. The 33-year-old Englishman and American Stefani, seeking his first PGA triumph, finished 72 holes level atop the leaderboard on four-under par 280 after both fired one-under 70s on Sunday.Rose hit into the trees and the water at the last regulation hole but sank a 15-foot bogey putt to stay tied for the lead, then watched Stefani find the same watery fate at 18 on the first playoff hole.A Congressional Country Club layout that hosted three US Opens, most recently when Rory McIlroy won in soggy conditions in 2011, played hard and fast and as formidable as many majors in the final round.I think Congressional wanted its reputation back, Rose said. It tested all of us getting to four-under par to win this tournament. In the playoff, Stefani pulled his tee shot left into trees while Rose smacked his in the fairway.Stefani took relief from a temporary immovable obstruction, a grandstand, and moved the ball back inside the trees, but then sent his approach into the same water left of the green that Rose had found earlier. With a second chance, Rose put his approach on the green and two-putted for par and the victory.Rose took a $1.1 million winner's prize and will take a week off before playing the Scottish Open as his final warm-up for the 143rd British Open at Royal Liverpool starting July 17.Rose won his first major title last year at Merion and on Sunday won his sixth US title, including the 2010 National when it was played at Aronimink Golf Club near Philadelphia.Congressional rewarded Rose's consistency and swatted aside third-round leader Patrick Reed, who shot 77 and lost for the first time when leading after 54 holes.Reed, who was seeking his fourth PGA title in 10 months, led by two strokes when the day began and the 23-year-old American went on a roller coaster run that still saw him two ahead to open the back nine.Rose, meanwhile, took a bogey at the third, but answered with birdies at the par-5 sixth and ninth holes.A day after a double-bogey disaster at 11, Rose dropped his approach to five feet and made the birdie putt to pull within one of the leader.Reed plunked his tee shot into the water at the tricky par-3 10th, put his third into greenside rough, chipped to 11 feet and made the double bogey putt to fall only one behind new leader Rose. When Reed found the water again and made a double bogey on 11 as well, Reed had only Stefani and Brendan Steele within a shot.A double bogey at 18 ended Steele's hopes and Rose sank a tense nine-foot par putt at 17 but Stefani answered by having a 14-foot birdie putt at 16 drop in the side of the hole to match Rose atop the leaderboard.Rose sent his tee shot at 18 left into the trees and blasted his second shot low through a gap only to see it roll into water left of the green. Stefani, meanwhile, chipped 10 feet past the cup on 17 and lipped out the par putt, his bogey leaving Rose in front.Rose blasted his fourth shot 15 feet past the cup but made the clutch comeback bogey putt that earned a playoff spot.Stefani and Steele joined fellow Americans Ben Martin and Charley Hoffman in earning invitations to the British Open based on their top-five finishes.

OMAHA (AP) - Terence Bud Crawford stopped Cuba's Yuriorkis Gamboa in the ninth round Saturday night to successfully defend his WBO lightweight belt in a match of unbeaten fighters.Crawford wobbled Gamboa with a left and knocked him down with another left earlier in the ninth, then connected with a right to the chin at the 2:53 mark, prompting referee Gino Rodriguez to call the fight. As Rodriguez waved his arms, Crawford ran to a neutral corner and jumped on the shoulders of co-manager Brian McIntyre.I hurt him plenty of times, Crawford said, so when I hurt him the last time, I was looking to finish. The 26-year-old Crawford (24-0, 17 knockouts) was fighting in his hometown for the first time as a professional, and more than 10,000 showed up at the CenturyLink Center, many of them chanting Craw-ford Craw-ford throughout.I imagined everybody screaming, supporting me, Crawford said. It was everything I thought it was going to be.It was his first title defense since his 12-round unanimous decision over Ricky Burns in Glasgow, Scotland, in March. He said he plans to move up to junior welterweight after this fight. The 32-year-old Gamboa (23-1, 16 knockouts), a 2004 Olympic champion, was fighting for the first time in a year.Crawford took control in the middle rounds. In the fifth, Crawford knocked down Gamboa with a left to the side of his head. Crawford staggered him just before the bell with a flurry of shots, bringing the crowd to its feet. The 5-foot-5 (1.65-meter) Gamboa, with a 5-inch reach disadvantage, had trouble working inside against Crawford. When Crawford moved in, Gamboa used his superior speed to duck under him.Crawford landed a right to Gamboa's cheek in the second round. As the fighters went into a clinch, Gamboa put a couple quick rights to the back of Crawford's head, drawing a warning from the referee. Gamboa landed a couple stinging shots in the third, but that he never was able to hurt Crawford. He caught me with a good shot in the ninth, at the beginning, Crawford said. It got my attention and buzzed me a little.Omaha hadn't been site for a world championship fight since 1972, when Joe Frazier successfully defended his heavyweight title against Ron Stander, who was in the crowd Saturday night. In the co-main event, WBO No. 1-ranked middleweight Matt Korobov remained unbeaten with a unanimous decision over Jose Uzcatequi for that organization's intercontinental title.Korobov (24-0) landed a hard left to the previously unbeaten Uzcatequi's nose in the first round, knocked him down twice in the fifth and put him on his knees with a body blow in the ninth. The 23-year-old Uzcatequi (22-1), who had stopped his previous five opponents, was in his first professional fight outside Mexico. In another fight, unbeaten Canadian Mikael Zewski stopped Prince Doku Jr. of Ghana in the third round of a scheduled 10-round bout for the NABF welterweight title.

Williamson puts Kiwis in driving seat against WIndies

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Kane Williamsons highest Test score put New Zealand in control at 331 for seven in their second innings, a lead of 307 runs, on a rain-shortened fourth day of the third and final Test at Kensington Oval on Sunday. His unbeaten 161 in over six hours at the crease was the highlight of a determined Black Caps effort that tilted the balance of an intriguing match. When heavy rain swept across the ground in mid-afternoon, the tourists were poised to build on what was already a challenging target at 314 for six, ahead by 290.Only 20 more minutes of play was possible on the resumption, with one more wicket being lost for the addition of another 17 runs, before more rain rolled in.That left New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum to contemplate his options for a declaration going into Mondays final day, weather permitting.A key factor in his consideration will be that the highest winning fourth innings total in a Test match at the venue is 311 by the Brian Lara-led West Indies against Australia in 1999.Williamsons innings was a masterful effort of concentration and shot-making.The elegant right-hander stroked 22 boundaries in a classy innings, putting the seal on an outstanding series for the 23-year-old that has brought him 413 runs so far.McCullum contributed to his teams improved second innings effort, scoring 25 in a 67-run fourth-wicket partnership with Williamson before he fell lbw to Kemar Roach in the fourth over of the day.All-rounder Jimmy Neesham picked up from where his captain left off and was even more impressive, striking four sixes and three fours in an entertaining 51 out of a fifth-wicket stand of 91 before another powerful drive by the left-hander off debutant Jason Holder found Kraigg Brathwaite at short extra-cover.Wicketkeeper-batsman B.J. Watling nudged and deflected his way to 29 while Williamson took centre stage in a sixth-wicket partnership of 79 as an increasingly frustrated Denesh Ramdin and his West Indies team seemed to run out of ideas.Roach and the second new ball eventually brought the breakthrough after lunch, Watling cutting the fast bowler to Holder at backward point to become the Barbadians 100th Test wicket in his 26th Test, the 19th West Indian in the history of the game to reach that landmark. It was also his fourth wicket of the innings and eighth of the match, although his personal success was only a momentary distraction from the greater challenge facing the West Indies.

Mars 'flying saucer' splashes back down after test

Posted:

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A saucer-shaped vehicle launched by balloon high into Earths atmosphere has splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, completing a successful test of technology that could be used to land on Mars. The $150 million experimental flight Saturday tested a novel vehicle and a giant parachute designed to deliver heavier spacecraft and eventually astronauts. The parachute did not fully deploy but NASA still deemed the mission a success. After taking off from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Hawaii, the balloon boosted the disc-shaped vehicle over the ocean. Its rocket motor carried the vehicle to 34 miles high, where the environment was similar to the thin Martian atmosphere. As the vehicle dropped back to Earth, a tube around it expanded like a Hawaiian puffer fish, creating atmospheric drag to dramatically slow it down.

New Zealand edge ahead of West Indies in Barbados

Posted:

BRIDGETOWN (AFP) - Kane Wiliamson and Brendon McCullum lifted New Zealand to 123 for three, a lead of 99, at stumps on the third day of the third and final Test aagainst West Indies at Kensington Oval on Saturday.Early strikes by the West Indies bowlers put the tourists under pressure in their second innings but an unbroken fourth-wicket partnership of 55 between Wiliamson and McCullum steadied the ship. Both batsmen had their moments of good fortune but Williamsons unbeaten 58 and the captains 23 not out have given their team a fighting chance going into the fourth day on Sunday of posting a competitive target in this series decider.Trailing by 24 runs after the West Indies were dismissed for 317 in their first innings, the Black Caps top order wobbled against the threat posed by two home-grown fast bowlers.Kemar Roach removed both opening batsmen to lift his career tally of Test wickets to 98. Tom Latham miscued an attempted pull to midwicket before he had scored and Hamish Rutherfords poor run of form continued with an edge to wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin when on 19.Jason Holder, the debutant who went wicketless in the New Zealand first innings but contributed an important 38 runs in the West Indies reply, put the seal on a good day with the wicket of Ross Taylor with his first ball, the experienced middle-order batsman giving a straightforward catch to Darren Bravo at second slip.McCullum was perilously close to being ruled lbw three balls later but survived to continue the fight in partnership with Williamson, who escaped a stumping chance off Shane Shillingford in the spinners first over nearing the end of the day.He also had the chance to remove McCullum, but the sharp chance was missed at short-leg by substitute fielder Jermaine Blackwood.Neil Wagner, whose wickets of Bravo and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in the morning session were critical to limiting the Caribbean sides progress from their overnight 169 for two, added the scalp of Sulieman Benn after lunch to finish with the best figures of four for 64.New Zealand had aspirations of actually earning a minimal first innings lead when Trent Boult made good use of the second new ball, trapping West Indies captain Ramdin leg-before for 45 and dispensing with new batsman Roach to a catch at the wicket to reduce the hosts to 277 for seven. However, Holder and Shillingford put on 36 for the eighth wicket.Given the responsibility of an all-rounder in a weakened batting line-up, Holder played well for 38 until he gloved an attempted hook off Neesham to become another B.J. Watling victim behind the stumps. His demise triggered the final slide with the last three wickets going down for just four runs, Wagner uprooting Benns off-stump and Neesham yorking Jerome Taylor to wrap up the innings.

Cricket: Pietersen says 'unhappy' England still suffering Ashes hangover

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Kevin Pietersen has said an underlying current of unhappiness within the England side that developed during the Ashes thrashing in Australia was still at work had played its part in the team's first home Test series defeat by Sri Lanka.England went down to a 100-run defeat by Sri Lanka in the second Test at Headingley on Tuesday to lose the series 1-0 after the tourists clung on for a draw at Lord's.The Sri Lanka series was the first since Pietersen, England's all-time leading run-scorer across all formats, had his central contract cancelled by the England and Wales Cricket Board. That decision, which the ECB didn't explain by any reference to loss of form or fitness, but rather a need to support Test captain Alastair Cook, effectively ended the international career of South Africa-born batsman Pietersen. But hopes results would improve quickly in his absence after the 5-0 Ashes reverse were dashed by Sri Lanka. And Pietersen, in his latest Daily Telegraph column published Saturday, suggested there was more to England's woes than on-field performance, citing the way in which last man James Anderson broke down in tears after being dismissed off the penultimate ball at Headingley as an example.England were in winning positions in both matches but blew it, and I believe that is a symptom of the senior players being very unsettled. They are not turning up for the captain or coach.(Stuart) Broad and (Anderson) looked jaded at Headingley. Why? Why was Jimmy so emotional? We have lost a lot of matches in the past but he has never shown such emotion. He has been through tougher times and suffered lower moments but never been in tears before. It says to me there is an underlying current of unhappiness. The Australia tour was hard. We were beaten up due to a lot of reasons I cannot go into right now, and some of the senior players are still suffering, with the result that they are struggling to offer leadership in the dressing room, added Pietersen, who signed a settlement agreement that allowed the ECB to terminate his central contract before it was due to expire.Former skipper Pietersen also said the form of current England captain Alastair Cook -- the left-handed opener has gone 24 innings without a Test century -- was having an impact upon his leadership of the team.Cook's form will be affecting him, Pietersen said. I have played with Cooky long enough to know that when that happens he becomes very quiet and introverted. He struggles to handle it. We have all been through it and it does play on your mind.Shane Warne, a friend and former Hampshire colleague of Pietersen, has said Cook ought to relinquish the captaincy. But Warne's fellow Australia bowling great Glenn McGrath said Cook ought to remain in post for England's upcoming five-Test series at home to India as there is no obvious candidate to replace him.If there's no one that's going to do a better job, and he's happy to do it, then the captaincy should stay with him, McGrath told cricket.com.au.However, McGrath added Cook needed to be more flexible in the field.I like Cooky, and I have a lot of respect for him, McGrath said. But England are fairly set in their ways. They seem to have plan A and then plan B is nearly non-existent -- it's stand back and wait for the opposition to make a mistake.I think in this day and age you have to be a little bit more innovative and think on your feet a little bit more.

Tennis: Sharapova powers into Wimbledon last 16

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Maria Sharapova remains on course for a rare French Open and Wimbledon double after moving into the fourth round at the All England Club with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over American Alison Riske on Saturday.Sharapova is bidding to become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2002 to follow victory at Roland Garros with Wimbledon glory just weeks later. The 27-year-old was pushed harder than the scoreline suggested, but the 2004 Wimbledon winner eventually took charge to over-power world number 44 Riske in 69 minutes under the roof on Centre Court.Sharapova, the world number five, is yet to drop a set in this year's tournament and will play German ninth seed Angelique Kerber or Belgium's Kirsten Flipkens, a 2013 semi-finalist, for a place in the quarter-finals.

Football: There was no bite, says Suarez

Posted:

RIO DE JANEIRO (AFP) - Shamed Uruguayan star Luis Suarez insisted he lost his balance and did not bite Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini, according to a FIFA report on the assault which led to him being expelled from the World Cup.But the FIFA disciplinary commission which banned 27-year-old Suarez from all football for four months said in a report seen by AFP that he had acted intentionally and without provocation.Suarez's statement to the commission, which was included in their report, said: I lost my balance and ended up falling on my opponent (Chiellini). At that moment, my face hit the player (Chiellini) leaving a small bruise and sharp pain in the teeth. He added: In no case what has been described as a bite or attempting to bite happened.Television images of the incident in last Tuesday's Group D game in which Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 showed clear bite marks in Chiellini's shoulder. Suarez has served two previous bans for biting. The FIFA commission on Thursday banned Suarez from any football activity for four months, suspended him for nine international matches and ordered him to pay a 100,000 Swiss francs (83,000 euros/112,000 dollar) fine. The Uruguayan government and football association has reacted with outrage to the sanction. But the disciplinary commission gave a damning assessment of Suarez's actions in its final report in Spanish which was leaked to various media. It said the offence was carried out directly against an opposing player, while the ball was not being disputed, and it was done deliberately, intentionally and without provocation. It added that intentionally causing physical injury to an opposing player, through a bite ... is completely alien to football (and) obviously violates the principles of fair play or sporting ethic.Suarez on Saturday thanked fans for the support they have shown. The goalscorer has taken refuge with his family since being expelled from the World Cup.The 27-year-old Liverpool striker posted a Twitter statement to give thanks for the outpouring of love and support I am receiving.Myself and my family really appreciate it, he added. Thank you very much for being by my side. I want all of us to support my teammates in today's match against Colombia.

Tennis: Nadal shines as rain swamps Wimbledon

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Rafael Nadal overcame an early blip to defeat Kazakhstan's Mikhail Kukushkin and reach the Wimbledon last 16, shining beneath the Centre Court roof on Saturday as heavy rain swept away the action outside. The 2008 and 2010 champion dropped the opening set for the third time in three matches before turning things around in a 6-7 (4/7), 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 victory. The second seeded Spaniard blitzed world number 63 Kukushkin, who had never won a match at Wimbledon before this year and had only ever beaten one top 10 player.Nadal, the 28-year-old winner of 14 Grand Slam titles, won 17 of the last 19 games and goes on to face either Australia's rising star Nick Kyrgios or Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic for a place in the quarter-finals.They had played just 15 minutes of their third-round match out on Court 17 before rain halted all action on the uncovered courts and forced All England Club organisers to cancel 24 doubles and junior matches by mid-afternoon.Nadal had dropped the first set to Martin Klizan and Lukas Rosol in his first two rounds and Kukushkin, playing in his 21st tournament of the year, employed the same free-swinging tactics to bludgeon his way through the opener. But in front of a Royal Box containing such sporting glitterati as retired Indian cricket master Sachin Tendulkar, ex-England football captain David Beckham and former Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins, Nadal regained his composure to race away with the win. From 1-1 in the second set to 3-0 in the fourth set, Nadal won 14 of 15 games and only faced his first break points of the tie at 2-0 in the fourth.Kukushkin, a rare example of a player coached by his own wife, stopped the rot by getting on the board at 1-3.But it was a brief respite as Nadal stormed to victory with 41 winners and just 12 unforced errors. At the beginning he was playing pretty long, no mistakes, very aggressive and I made few unforced errors with that second serve, said Nadal who has reached the second week for the first time since 2011.In the tie-break, I didn't serve my best and that was the real thing -- without serving your best in a tie-break against a player who is playing well, it is impossible.- Sharapova, Federer take centre stage -========================================Nadal said he was looking forward to the second week after a first round loss in 2013 and second round exit 12 months earlier.I'm very happy to be in the second week again after two years losing in the first and second round. I'm playing well, good spirit, good tactics on court, fighting for every ball.Seven-time men's champion Roger Federer and 2004 women's winner Maria Sharapova were guaranteed to finish their third round matches as they were completing the Centre Court programme.Federer tackles Colombian world number 35 Santiago Giraldo, who he defeated in their one previous meeting in straight sets, at the 2011 US Open.Giraldo had never got beyond the second round at Wimbledon until this year.Sharapova, who won the first of her five majors at Wimbledon as a 17-year-old in 2004, faces Alison Riske of the United States, who she beat on grass in the semi-finals in Birmingham in their only other previous clash in 2010.I feel like her game matches up with grass extremely well. She stays down really low, hits really flat from both sides, has had steady results on the surface. It's going to be a challenge. Yeah, I look forward to playing her, said French Open champion Sharapova. On Court One, five-time women's champion Serena Williams and Alize Cornet of France were 1-1 in the first set before rain halted their third round clash.
