Football: Chile beat Peru 2-1 to reach Copa America final

Posted:

SANTIAGO (AFP) - Eduardo Vargas scored twice as Chile downed fierce rivals Peru 2-1 here Monday to reach the Copa America final for the first time in nearly 30 years.Vargas, who endured a miserable season on loan at relegated English Premier League side Queens Park Rangers, lashed in a stunning 64th-minute strike as the hosts advanced to the final for the first time since 1987.Vargas had given Chile a controversial lead after 42 minutes, prodding home from close range after the referees assistant failed to spot a fractional offside. Peru, who played most of the match with 10 men after Carlos Zambrano was sent off for a reckless challenge on Charles Aranguiz after 20 minutes, came back bravely to force an equaliser through a Gary Medel own goal in the 60th minute. But Vargas, who also had a legitimate goal wrongly ruled out for offside early in the second half, restored Chiles lead with a contender for goal of the tournament. The 25-year-old picked up a loose ball in midfield, surged forward and unleashed a ferocious dipping 30-yard effort that flew into the top corner past Peru goalkeeper Pedro Gallese. Chile will now play the winner of Tuesdays semi-final between Argentina and Paraguay as they chase a first ever Copa America crown after 99 years of failure. The latest instalment of Chile and Perus long football rivalry -- known as the Clasico del Pacifico -- burst into life after only four minutes, when Chiles Arturo Vidal tangled angrily with Zambrano. Vidal was fortunate to escape at least a booking for thrusting a hand in Zambranos face as tempers threatened to boil over.Moments later, Venezuelan referee Jose Argota moved to nip the tensions in the bud, showing Zambrano a yellow card for tugging down Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez.Yet while Chile made the brighter start, it was Peru that came closest to scoring in the opening minutes, with Jefferson Farfans header from a Paolo Guerrero cross cannoning back off the woodwork. The match turned in the 20th minute after Zambranos dismissal. The centre-half was given his marching orders after catching Charles Aranguiz with an ugly studs-up challenge as he followed through after a clearance. Sensing Perus vulnerability, Chile turned up the pressure and might have opened the scoring through Jorge Valdivia on 28 minutes, only for the influential playmakers curling shot to fly just wide. Six minutes later, Chile were denied again when Peru defender Luis Advincula produced a superb last-ditch block from Vargas to clear.Three minutes before half-time, though, Perus resistance broke when Sanchezs cross from the left bounced back off the inside of the upright for Vargas to bundle home from close range. The goal was harsh on Peru, though, as replays showed Vargas was fractionally offside when Sanchez crossed.Chile sought to press home their advantage after the break and Vargas was unlucky to see a superb volleyed goal ruled out.Peru clawed their way back into the contest on the hour mark when Guerrero released Advincula down the right. The fullbacks cross caused havoc in the Chile area and Medel panicked and prodded home past Claudio Bravo.Perus celebrations were shortlived though when Vargas crashed in his winning goal four minutes later.

Tennis: Federer, Murray, Nadal enter Wimbledon heat

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Former champions Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray get their 2015 Wimbledon campaigns underway Tuesday, desperate to avoid marathon duels in temperatures expected to smash the 30-degree barrier.Second seed Federer, the seven-time champion, faces Damir Dzumhur of Bosnia, who he beat at the French Open this year, 2013 winner Murray takes on Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan while Nadal, the 2008 and 2010 champion, plays Brazils Thomaz Bellucci.Federer, bidding for his 18th major, says he is in the perfect condition to win Wimbledon for a record eighth time as the Swiss great bids to avenge last years heart-breaking final defeat.Federers last appearance at the All England Club 12 months ago ended in the despair of a five-set loss against Novak Djokovic that left him shedding tears. If I look at last year, I see more the positives than actually the heart-breaking loss in the final, said Federer, fresh from his eighth Halle grasscourt title last week.It goes to show that last year, I wasnt playing great and I made the finals. Whereas now I feel my game is better. I can really aim for Wimbledon this year. I feel like I see a big picture more now.World number 87 Dzumhur, a political science student, is the first Bosnian man to play in the Wimbledon main draw. The 23-year-old from Sarajevo had two of the biggest wins in his career -- over former top tenners Mikhail Youzhny and Marcos Baghdatis -- to reach the third round at the French Open where he lost to Federer in straight sets.Murray takes a 2-0 career lead over world number 58 Kukushkin into their opener on Centre Court. Like Murray, Kukushkin is coached by a woman -- his wife Anastasia.Murray beat his rival twice in 2012 at Brisbane and then at the Australian Open in the fourth round. That remains Kukushkins best run at a major although he did reach the third round at Wimbledon in 2014 where he lost to Nadal.Nadal is seeded at a lowly 10 this year but has a 4-0 career lead over 27-year-old Bellucci, the Brazilian he also beat in the Wimbledon first round in 2012. Petra Kvitova, the second seeded Czech, begins the defence of her womens title, against Dutchwoman Kiki Bertens. The 23-year-old Bertens is ranked at 108 having been as high as 41 in 2013 and made the semi-finals on grass at S-Hertogenbosch two weeks ago.

Tennis: Djokovic rages, Hewitt bids Wimbledon farewell

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Novak Djokovic, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova reached the Wimbledon second round on Monday as 2002 champion Lleyton Hewitts 17-year All England Club career came to a bruising end.Defending champion Djokovic enjoyed a 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 win over Germanys Philipp Kohlschreiber with crucial breaks in the ninth game of each set.But the world number one and top seed again found himself defending allegations that coach Boris Becker is using various means to coach him from the sidelines, a practice which is banned.Im just trying to figure out what you want to achieve with this story. Do you want to say Im cheating, my team? Im really trying to figure out whats behind this, fumed the 28-year-old Djokovic. The usually affable Serb added: There are certain ways of communication which is encouragement, which is support, which is understanding the moment when to clap or say something that can lift my energy up, that can kind of motivate me to play a certain point. But its all within the rules.Djokovic, playing his first match since his defeat to Stan Wawrinka in the French Open final three weeks ago ended his hopes of completing a career Grand Slam, hit 12 aces and 36 winners past world number 33 Kohlschreiber. He next faces Finlands Jarkko Nieminen who defeated Hewitt 3-6, 6-3, 4-6, 6-0, 11-9 in a four-hour marathon. It was Hewitts last singles match at the tournament -- and 44th five-setter at the majors -- as he plans to retire after next years Australian Open.I probably dont cry easily -- pretty close today, but not quite, said Hewitt.Top seed Serena Williams, bidding to become the first woman since Steffi Graf in 1988 to wrap up all four majors in one season, endured a nervy start and was warned for swearing before completing a 6-4, 6-1 win over Margarita Gasparyan, the world number 113 from Russia who has never won a tour-level match in four years as a professional. It feels good so far. Just one match but it feels good just to be back here at Wimbledon. Ive done so well here in the past so Ill always have so many good memories, said the 33-year-old American after her 73rd Wimbledon match win secured her a second round clash against Hungarys Timea Babos.Fourth seed Sharapova also reached the second round with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Britains Johanna Konta.Sharapova, the 2004 champion, will face Dutch qualifier Richel Hogenkamp for a place in the last 32.I was quite pleased with the way things went. It was my first competitive match in about four weeks, so I just wanted to start off really strong, said the Russian.Five-time champion Venus Williams wasnt to be outdone as the 34-year-old American took just 42 minutes to crush compatriot Madison Brengle 6-0, 6-0. Williams hit 29 winners to just two from Brengle, the world number 36.But hers wasnt the fastest win of the day as German 14th seed Andrea Petkovic needed just 38 minutes to see off Shelby Rogers of the United States.Spanish ninth seed Carla Suarez Navarro went down 6-2, 6-0 to Latvias Jelena Ostapenko in just 52 minutes.Two-time semi-finalist Victoria Azarenka, seeded 23, saw off Estonias Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-1 and seventh seed Ana Ivanovic breezed past Chinese qualifier Xu Yifan 6-1, 6-1.In the mens first round, fourth seeded Wawrinka made the second round by beating Joao Sousa of Portugal, 6-2, 7-5, 7-6 (7/3).Australias 26th seed Nick Kyrgios, who knocked out Rafael Nadal last year, eased past Argentinas Diego Schwartzman 6-0, 6-2, 7-6 (8/6).US Open champion Marin Cilic, the ninth seeded Croatian and a quarter-finalist at Wimbledon last year, got past Japanese qualifier Hiroki Moriya 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7/4).Germanys Tommy Haas, at 37 years and 100 days old, and who first played Wimbledon in 1997, beat Serbias Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to become the oldest man to win a match at Wimbledon since Jimmy Connors (38 years 308 days) in 1991.Japans fifth seed Kei Nishikori needed his lower left leg strapped before clinching a gruelling 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over Italys Simone Bolelli.Meanwhile Canadian seventh seed Milos Raonic, a semi-finalist last year, beat Spains Daniel Gimeno 6-2, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4).

Wimbledon: Maria Sharapova sends Johanna Konta packing

Posted:

LONDON (Agencies) - Russias five-time grand slam winner Maria Sharapova dispatched Britains Johanna Konta 6-2 6-2 to condemn Australia-born Konta to a fourth-successive defeat at SW19.Konta lost to the eventual-champion Belinda Bencic at the Eastbourne quarter-finals but was unable to make that momentum count in south west London on Monday. The 24-year-old was justified in targeting a first Wimbledon win at the fourth time of asking - until she drew 2004 champion Sharapova.Watched on by Fed Cup captain Judy Murray, Konta was unable to channel the battling spirits employed by fellow Briton Liam Broady, who had earlier seen off Marinko Matosevic in a five-set thriller.Konta insisted she was unfazed by either the occasion or the opponent in reacting to her defeat to Sharapova, then immediately switched focus to her doubles duties.Konta described herself as one of the luckiest athletes in the world to go straight from taking on Sharapova to line up against Venus and Serena Williams in the doubles.Already gearing up to face the 12th seeds with partner Maria Sanchez, Konta said: I feel Im one of the luckiest athletes in the world that I get to play not one, not two, but three incredible champions in the string of a few days. Not many people can say that.Im very much just looking forward to the opportunity, going out there and giving my best with my partner.Ive been playing and I train every day to be able to compete against the best in the world at the best events in the world. You dont get much better than this. You dont get many better players than the players Im playing.Ive been fortunate enough that Ive been playing a lot of good players in the last few weeks.Today it was no different. You can start saying, Ive been there, been in the scenario before. You might be that little bit more comfortable from the get go.I felt very comfortable out there, I didnt feel overwhelmed by the situation, nor did I feel overwhelmed by the player I was playing.

Euro rallies vs dollar ahead of expected Greek default

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The euro strengthened against the dollar on Monday despite Greeces institution of capital controls and shutting banks ahead of an expected default on its debt. The euro recovered and then some from losses over the weekend as Greeces debt drama took unexpected turns. Athens shock announcement of a July 5 referendum on creditors bailout proposals effectively broke off negotiations that would extend the governments financial lifeline. On Monday, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras implied that Greece would default on a 1.5 billion-euro debt payment due Tuesday to the International Monetary Fund, a partner in the bailout with the European Commission and the European Central Bank.(How) is it possible the creditors are waiting for the IMF payment while our banks are being suffocated? he asked, adding: Once they decide to stop the suffocation, they will be paid. The euro was buying $1.1247 around 2100 GMT, up from $1.1160 late Friday. On Sunday the single currency had fallen to a four-week low of $1.0955.Kathy Lien of BK Asset Management said that many traders were thoroughly confused by the euros performance on Monday, because with an IMF default looming, the euro should be trading much lower against the greenback but instead it was much higher. We do not believe that the turnaround in the currency represents the markets satisfaction with the imminent default, said Lien. Some investors are still hopeful that a deal would be reached eventually given the supportive comments from eurozone officials.Standard & Poors, meanwhile, downgraded Greeces credit rating deeper into junk territory, saying it saw a commercial debt default within the next six months and a 50 percent chance Greece will exit the eurozone.

Aus-NZ to play historic day-night Test

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Australia and New Zealand will play crickets first day-night Test match under lights in Adelaide this November using a pink ball, cricket chiefs announced Tuesday.Despite the misgivings of players, officials in Australia and New Zealand said the innovation would help drive up television audiences and spectator numbers for the five-day game.By shifting the playing times each days play can go into the evening and allow people to come in after work or after school to attend the last few hours of play... (or) watch the game on TV, Cricket Australia (CA) chief James Sutherland said.CA has been a long-time promoter of playing Test cricket under lights and trialled day-night first class cricket in the 2014-15 Sheffield Shield season. The historic international will be played in Adelaide from November 27-December 1 and will be the third and final Test in a series between the trans-Tasman rivals. The match will be played with a pink ball that has been developed by manufacturer Kookaburra to be more visible to players under lights than the traditional red one.New Zealand Cricket chief David White said the day-night format would not take over from regular Test cricket, describing it as part of the games evolution.Since the first Test in 1877, there have been numerous changes to the laws and rules in an effort to ensure the game remains relevant -- and this is another, he said.Despite administrators enthusiasm, many players are concerned day-night Tests undermine the games traditions and could increase the danger for batsmen if they cannot pick-up the ball properly under lights.A survey of New Zealands top players last month found most senior Black Caps were sceptical about taking part in an experiment they feared could devalue the Test. But the pay-off for the Black Caps involvement is guaranteed matches against Australia for the next seven years. Its uncharted territory and because of that there will be uncertainty and apprehension, New Zealand Players Association chief Heath Mills said. However, whilst the players have reservations about playing Test cricket at night, they see the bigger picture in the new agreement.

Oil prices retreat as Greek default looms

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - Oil prices dropped Monday, joining other global markets in retreat on the looming threat of a Greek debt default. US benchmark West Texas Intermediate for August delivery fell $1.30 to $58.33 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.European benchmark Brent oil for August delivery shed $1.25 at $62.01 a barrel in London.Greece, Greece, I think its primarily Greece, said Kyle Cooper, analyst at IAF Advisors in Houston. The whole situation, the prospective default, this adds uncertainty.Global equity markets fell sharply after Greece and its creditors failed to reach an agreement on a deal to release bailout funds in time for Greece to meet a 1.5 billion euro ($1.7 billion) debt payment to the International Monetary Fund due Tuesday.Standard & Poors downgraded Greeces credit rating deeper into junk territory, saying the governments decision to hold a referendum on the creditors bailout proposals brought it closer to default and an exit of the eurozone.Other factors behind the drop in oil prices were worries about economic weakness in China, a big oil importer, and the prospect that nuclear negotiations between Iran and global powers could lead to a deal that lifts sanctions, paving the way for more Iranian crude to hit the oversupplied international market.

Clarke confident as Ashes loom large

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Australia captain Michael Clarke believes his side are building up to their defence of the Ashes in just the right style after opening their tour with a convincing victory over Kent.Clarkes men now face Essex in another four-day match, starting on Wednesday, before commencing the defence of the Ashes they won 5-0 on home soil in 2013/14 in Cardiff next week.In Canterbury, Australia beat Kent by 255 runs in a match featuring hundreds for the Marsh brothers, Shaun and Mitchell, as well as star batsman Steven Smith.Veteran opener Chris Rogers and all-rounder Shane Watson both spent time in the middle as well, while fast bowler Mitchell Johnson looked sharp in taking four wickets in Kents first innings, with fellow-paceman Ryan Harris also producing some lively spells. For all their recent success, Australia have not won an Ashes series in Britain since 2001, but Clarke reckons they will be well-prepared to end a run of three straight away Ashes series reverses on this tour. There was a lot of positives that came out of the (Kent) game. First thing, we won, and that was really important for us as a team, to get out and get a first win in the UK, Clarke told Sky Sports on Monday.Individually guys got what they needed as well.It is a good start and now we have the opportunity to play against Essex, hopefully with the same result. We are trying to work that perfect balance as a team leading up to that first Test, where I have always believed tour games are important to play to win to get some momentum and confidence, and then to get individuals a bat, for them to have a bowl.So you will have seen us change our batting order in the second innings, but our result was still what we wanted.Australia against England has been the foundation stone of Test cricket since the two countries first clashed in 1877 and 34-year-old batsman Clarke was well aware of the importance of the upcoming five-match series. It is a really exciting part of what comes with Ashes cricket; the build-up, the media, the public anticipation. I think thats great for any series, he said.Being an Australian player or an English player, Ashes at home or away, thats a big part of the package. Its great for the game but as a player you dont need to build up the Ashes. The public and the media are going to build it up for you, so for us its about ensuring you are focused on whats important right now -- and thats our preparation.

Gillespie defends 'Dad's Army' comment

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Jason Gillespie insisted Monday he was simply giving an honest answer to a question when he highlighted the ages of several players in Australias squad ahead of their Ashes series against England.Gillespies comments led current Australia coach Darren Lehmann, who has known the former Test fast bowler for over 20 years since they first played together in the same South Australia state side, to phone his old team-mate and say: GDay mate its Dads Army here. Ive got some pretty grumpy players here after what you said about them. But as Gillespie, now the coach of English county champions Yorkshire, also told the Guardian in an interview published Monday there was a perfectly straightforward explanation for his remarks. It certainly caused a stir didnt it? But it was very simple, I was asked the question as to how, if I was in the England camp, would I try to beat Australia, he said. Now I saw no glaring weaknesses in the Australian team. Their batting is sound, the seam bowling is quality, the spin is very good but the opposition still need to find a way in. So I looked at the ages and thought England could target that. They have 10 players over 30 years of age, how can England use that to their advantage? So if I was England coach, Id keep those guys out there for a long time, added Gillespie, who recently lost out on that very job to fellow-Australian coach Trevor Bayliss. If Chris Rogers is out there for two days then has 10 minutes to strap on his pads and get his feet moving, could that work to Englands advantage?, added Gillespie, who took 259 wickets in 71 Tests from 1996 to 2006 as a member of a highly successful Australia side. Brad Haddin is 38 this year, so test his fitness. The same with Michael Clarke, hes had back problems; test him out and keep him in the field. Ryan Harris, its well-documented he has a dodgy knee, so why wouldnt you try to keep that guy on the ground bowling lots of spells? Its just common sense. So I was asked a question and Im not the sort of person who dodges them. I didnt say anything that isnt true, Gillespie said.Holders Australia begin their defence of the Ashes with the first Test against England in Cardiff starting on July 8.
