Cook looks ahead after breaking 10,000 barrier

Posted:

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - England captain Alastair Cook was already looking ahead after becoming the youngest batsman to score 10,000 Test runs during the course of his sides series-clinching win over Sri Lanka at the Riverside on Monday.Cook, who started the day needing five more runs to bring up his 10,000, reached the landmark when he clipped Nuwan Pradeep for four through mid-wicket.That left-handed opener finished on 47 not out as England won the second Test with more than a day to spare, a victory that put them 2-0 up in the three-match series.Cook is the first England batsman to score 10,000 Test runs and at 31 years and 157 days old, the youngest from any country, beating the previous record of India great Sachin Tendulkar (31 years and 326 days). Its a very special moment for me, but the game is not about personal milestones, its about winning games and scoring runs to do that, said Cook.Cook, acknowledging the input of Essex and England mentor Graham Gooch, added: Its those seven oclock nets with Goochie, its all that hard work that goes with it. Asked who were the toughest bowlers he had faced in international cricket, Cook nominate a quartet of Australia quicks.(Ryan) Harris and (Mitchell) Johnson were hard, and facing (Glenn) McGrath and Brett Lee as a 21-year old was a good baptism for me.Cook scored a hundred on his debut against India at Nagpur in 2006 and has now made 28 Test centuries. But his career has not been one long sequence of unbroken success. The closest Cook, a veteran of 128 Tests, came close to being dropped was during a 2010 home series against Pakistan. But a hundred in the third Test at The Oval saved his place and set Cook up for a triumphant tour of Australia where he scored 766 runs, including three hundreds, as England won the Ashes 3-1. The Pakistan series in 2010 for me as a batter was hard, said Cook. I had changed my technique. I found it tough. It was an enlightening moment when I went back to my old technique.Cooks position as captain was called into question two years ago as England suffered a 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia and again during the 2014 home series defeat by Sri Lanka. As a player and captain Sri Lanka was hard. Forget all the runs. That is my proudest moment...hanging in there in the tough times, said Cook.Gooch, himself a former opener whose tally of 8,900 Test runs puts him second behind Cook on Englands all-time list, paid tribute to his protege by telling BBC Radios Test Match Special: Its not just about the runs you score, its about how many matches you win for your team and hes been at the forefront of that for the last decade. Hes a guy that gets the job done.Cook could have several more years in which to break Tendulkars all-time aggregate Test record of 15,921 runs.Who knows?, said Cook. I never thought I would get 10,000. Now I will have to have a rethink and set something else personally.Batsmen to have scored 10,000 runs in Tests:(player, team, span, matches, innings, not outs, runs, highest score, average, 100s, 50s) Sachin Tendulkar (IND) 1989-2013 200 329 33 15921 248 no 53.78 51 68Ricky Ponting (AUS) 1995-2012 168 287 29 13378 257 51.85 41 62Jacques Kallis (ICC/RSA) 1995-2013 166 280 40 13289 224 55.37 45 58Rahul Dravid (ICC/IND) 1996-2012 164 286 32 13288 270 52.31 36 63Kumar Sangakkara (SRI) 2000-2015 134 233 17 12400 319 57.40 38 52Brian Lara (ICC/WIS) 1990-2006 131 232 6 11953 400 no 52.88 34 48Shiv Chanderpaul (WIS)1994-2015 164 280 49 11867 203 no 51.37 30 66Mahela Jayawardene (SRI) 1997-2014 149 252 15 11814 374 49.84 34 50Allan Border (AUS) 1978-1994 156 265 44 11174 205 50.56 27 63Stephen Waugh (AUS)1985-2004 168 260 46 10927 200 51.06 32 50Sunil Gavaskar (IND) 1971-1987 125 214 16 10122 236 no 51.12 34 45Alastair Cook (ENG) 2006- 128 228 13 10042 294 46.49 28 47.

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - England named an unchanged 12-man squad for the third and final Test on Monday shortly after completing a series-clinching win at the Riverside.Victory by nine wickets in the second Test, a win completed with more than a day to spare, saw England go 2-0 up in the series.England will head to Lords, where the third Test starts on June 9, with captain Alastair Cook having become the youngest player -- and first Englishman -- to score 10,000 Test runs after he achieved the feat during the course of his 47 not out on Monday.Jake Ball, in the squad for the first two Tests, will be pressing for a debut, with fast bowler Steven Finn the most likely candidate to make way if the Nottinghamshire quick plays at Lords.England squad for third Test:Alastair Cook (Essex, capt), Alex Hales (Nottinghamshire), Nick Compton (Middlesex), Joe Root (Yorkshire), James Vince (Hampshire), Jonny Bairstow (Yorkshire, wkt), Moeen Ali (Worcestershire), Chris Woakes (Warwickshire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Steven Finn (Middlesex), James Anderson (Lancashire), Jake Ball (Nottinghamshire).

CHESTER-LE-STREET (AFP) - Alastair Cook became the first England batsman to score 10,000 Test runs as his side sealed a series win over Sri Lanka at the Riverside on Monday.England won the second Test by nine wickets after tea on the fourth day to go an unassailable 2-0 up in the three-match series.Set 79 for victory after making Sri Lanka follow-on, England finished on 80 for one.England captain Cook was 47 not out and Nick Compton, who hit the winning runs, 22 not out.Its a very special moment for me, but the game is not about personal milestones, its about winning games and scoring runs to do that, said let-handed opener Cook at the presentation ceremony.England paceman James Anderson was named man-of-the-match after taking a combined eight for 94 across both innings.Moeen Ali had set the game up for England with a Test-best 155 not out in a first innings total of 498 for nine declared.Jimmys a genius and Im glad to captain this bowling attack, said Cook.It was a brilliant hundred from Mo.Cooks innings Monday saw him score the five he needed to become just the 12th player of all time to make 10,000 Test runs.Cook reached the landmark when he clipped Nuwan Pradeep for four through mid-wicket, having got off the mark with an edged single against left-arm spinner Rangana Herath. At 31 years and 157 days he was the youngest player ever to achieve the feat, beating the previous record of India great Sachin Tendulkar (31 years and 326 days).Earlier, Dinesh Chandimals excellent hundred kept England waiting as Sri Lanka made 475 in their second innings.Chandimals 126 was his sixth hundred in 27 Tests but first outside Asia.He received excellent support from Herath (61) in a seventh-wicket stand of 116.Sri Lanka resumed on 309 for five, 88 runs behind.Chandimal was 54 not out overnight and Milinda Siriwardana unbeaten on 35 after Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews (80) and Kaushal Silva (60) initially kept England at bay.Mondays initial cloud cover promise to assist both Anderson and Stuart Broad.Siriwardana had not added a run to his overnight score when he edged Anderson straight to Alex Hales at gully to end a partnership worth 92. Chandimal, however, cover-drove Broad for four and late-cut Anderson behind point for another boundary. But he was lucky on 69 when he got an inside edge off Anderson only for diving wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow to spill the two-handed catch.Chandimal went into the 90s when he hooked fast bowler Steven Finn to the fine leg rope.An edged boundary off Woakes to third man saw the 26-year-old Chandimal to a 172-ball hundred including 11 fours.Chandimal ended the session in style by cover-driving Woakes for four off the last ball before lunch.Herath, dropped in the deep by James Vince off Anderson on 46, completed an 87-ball fifty with six fours. The 38-year-old spinner, who earlier in this match took his 300th Test wicket, eventually fell when Anderson, taking the fielders out of the equation, had him lbw from round the wicket to claim his 450th scalp in the five-day game.Anderson, already Englands all-time leading Test wicket-taker, then bowled Shaminda Eranga. His return of five for 58 was the 21st time Anderson had taken five or more wickets in an innings his 115 Test-career.Chandimals more than five-hour innings ended when he was bowled driving at Stuart Broad. But Sri Lankas batsmen had at least restored some pride.Their first innings 101 all out meant they became the first side since New Zealand in England back in 1958 to be bowled out for under 120 in three successive Test innings.Sri Lanka managed meagre totals of 91 and 119 during an innings and 88-run defeat in the series opener at Headingley. Its been a tough couple of weeks for us, said Mathews. We didnt bat well in the first innings but we showed a lot of resilience in the second innings. The third and final Test starts at Lords on June 9.
