Botham says don't judge England for performance against Bangladesh

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Ian Botham believes Englands end of year tour programme will be judged on their upcoming five-Test tour of India, rather than a stunning loss to Bangladesh.England, 100 without loss at tea on Sundays third day in Dhaka, collapsed to 164 all out on a spin-friendly pitch to lose by 108 runs -- their first Test match defeat by Bangladesh. The result saw Bangladesh share the two-match series 1-1 and raised fresh concerns over how England would cope in similar conditions in India, whose attack will feature off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin -- Test crickets number one-ranked bowler. It (a rapid collapse) can happen in that part of the world, England great Botham told AFP in an interview in London on Sunday. The wickets are tailored, they are designed to spin. When you see spinners opening in Tests with the new ball, you get an idea of whats coming. Its good for them (Bangladesh). But what theyve got to do is to start winning outside of their own country. Thats the acid test and thats what England have got to do now.At the end of the day, theyll be judged not so much on what happens in Bangladesh, but they will be judged more on what happens in India. While questions remain about Englands spinners, and their ability to play spin, Botham said all was far from lost for Alastair Cooks side as they headed to India.England have got the bowlers who can take the pitch out of the equation with reverse swing, the former pace bowling all-rounder added. If they go out there and they perform they can win.Stuart Broad, controversially rested in Dhaka, is set to lead Englands pace attack and make his 100th Test appearance when the India series opener in Rajkot starts on November 9.I presented him with his cap when he first played in Colombo, said Botham. There was stuff about Stuart Broad the enforcer. He got a bit caught up in that. But hes bowled his best spells when he bowls at the top of off stump, Australia at The Oval (when Broad took four for eight in 2009), Australia at Trent Bridge (eight for 15 in 2015).- Box office Stokes -=======================As for the decision to rest Broad, Botham said: Bowlers, rotate them. I was more in the Ben Stokes category. He wont get rested and I wouldnt have either.Durham all-rounder Stokes starred with both bat and ball in Englands 22-run win in the first Test against Bangladesh and Botham said: I think hes fantastic. I think hes box office. I love watching him play, I like his attitude, I like the aggression.Hes the kind of cricketer youll cross the road to watch. It is all a learning curve for him now, but he learns quickly, said Botham in an interview at a Hardys wine-tasting event in London.Botham, however, forecast changes to Englands faltering top order.I think someone like Jos Buttler might come into the equation. Spinners, he can destroy them. They (England) are not going to do anything drastic. Maybe Buttler comes in for someone like Gary Ballance, perhaps? As the cricket-lovers among the wine-buffs at Londons Olympia exhibition centre posed for selfies with Botham, he recalled how a friendship with the late English cricket broadcaster John Arlott -- also a noted wine writer -- had broadened his horizons.John took me under his wing when I was about 16 or 17, said Botham, himself now 60. We got on very well and stayed friends. I helped carry the coffin at his funeral. He was a wonderful man.I was a boy from Somerset and we used to drink cider. He started my education in wine.We bought a house just down the road from him (in the Channel Island of Alderney). Now when I go to Alderney I always get a very good bottle of red, go down to his grave, take the cork out, toast him with a glass, and leave the cork on the grave.

Manchester City to take on Barcelona in Champions League clash tonight

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - AFP Sports looks ahead to Tuesdays Champions League action as Pep Guardiolas Manchester City host Barcelona with a number of sides, including the Spanish champions, looking to seal a place in the next round (all kick-offs 1945 GMT unless stated):Group ALudogorets Razgrad (BUL) v Arsenal (ENG)At Sofia, BulgariaMesut Ozil scored his first professional hat-trick in Arsenals 6-0 whitewash of Ludogorets last time out. With Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez both grabbing braces at the weekend and Theo Walcott on a purple vein of form, the Gunners should have way too much for the Bulgarian champions. Plucky in their 3-1 home defeat to PSG, Ludogorets took a point at Basel and scored 15 goals in qualifying. But even if Arsenal fail to win here, they will qualify for the next round if PSG win in Basel.Basel (SUI) v Paris Saint-Germain (FRA)At Basel, SwitzerlandUnai Emerys PSG are starting to understand what the Spaniard wants tactically and they boast up front the red-hot Edinson Cavani, the Uruguayan striker who scored his 10th league goal of the season in a 1-0 win at Lille on Friday, where Angel Di Maria and Lucas showed promising fluidity around the targetman. A victory in Basel assures PSG of qualification, but Basel are unbeaten at home this season.Group BBesiktas (TUR) v Napoli (ITA), kick-off 1745At IstanbulTurkish champions Besiktas will go top of Group B if they follow up their 3-2 away win over Italians Napoli with a home win over them at their new stadium, where they have won 13 of their past 14 league fixtures. Euro 2016 star Ricardo Quaresma continues to impress for Besiktas and his free-kick and Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakars brace brought their thrilling victory in Italy. For the visitors Spains Jose Callejon is the man to watch after he scored a seventh goal of the season in a 2-1 Italian league loss to Juventus on Saturday. Napoli can book a place in the next round if they win and Benfica draw with Dynamo Kyiv.Benfica (POR) v Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)At LisbonAfter a draw with Besiktas and a thumping at Napoli, Benfica got their campaign back on track with a 2-0 win at Dynamo in the last round of matches. The Portuguese champions and league leaders are on astonishing form, especially at their Stadium of Light stronghold. Knocked out narrowly in the quarter-finals by Bayern Munich last season, Benfica know a home win will place them nicely for another second-round spot. Kyiv got a confidence-boosting league win at the weekend but with a single point so far their Champions League survival depends on a result in Portugal for Serhiy Rebrovs men -- which looks a very tall order.Group CManchester City (ENG) v Barcelona (ESP)At ManchesterLionel Messi scored three as Pep Guardiolas return to Barcelona went belly up with a 4-0 defeat two weeks ago. On the bright side a six-match winless streak was snapped by a 4-0 league win over West Brom on Saturday as star striker Sergio Aguero scored twice. Barcelona only need a point to qualify for the next round but with Luis Suarez, Neymar and Messi about to be unleashed on the blue half of a Manchester side who have not lost at home for 12 games, this is Tuesdays must-watch game.Borussia Moenchengladbach (GER) v Celtic (SCO)At Moenchengladbach, GermanyLose here and Celtic are out, but the Scots -- led by their passionate Northern Irish coach Brendan Rodgers -- will be just as concerned to avoid anything like the 7-0 whipping they took at Barcelona in their last Champions League away game. The Germans beat Celtic 2-0 away and will be hoping Barcelona beat City in the other Group C game to steal a march on the Mancunians. Andre Schuberts men have gone four league games without a win. In contrast, Celtic are on a 13-game unbeaten run in Scotland and striker Moussa Dembele has nine league goals so far.Group DAtletico Madrid (ESP) v Rostov (RUS)At MadridWith a mean defence and a fearsome attack featuring French duo Antoine Griezmann and Kevin Gameiro, a draw with Russians Rostov could qualify impressive Atletico Madrid for the next round. A win will certainly do it. A solitary Yannick Carrasco goal gave Atletico a narrow win in Russia two weeks ago and Carrasco scored twice on Saturday as his team breezed past Malaga, Gameiro bagging two as well. Diego Simeones men are top of the group with three wins including a celebrated Bayern Munich scalp. Visiting Spain for the first time, Rostov have a single point from a 2-2 draw at PSV so far.PSV Eindhoven (NED) v Bayern Munich (GER)At Eindhoven, NetherlandsPSVs Champions League future depends on avoiding defeat here while Bayern can qualify with a win should Rostov lose in Madrid. Carlo Ancelottis side beat PSV 4-1 two weeks ago. Robert Lewandowski netted twice in a 3-1 win at Augsburg on Saturday while Dutch winger Arjen Robben was outstanding with two assists and a goal. Bayern are second in Group D, three points behind Atletico, who they host on December 6 having already lost 1-0 in Spain. Eindhoven are bottom of the table with one point from their three games.

Harry Reid says FBI director 'may have broken the law'

Posted:

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Senates top Democrat blasted FBI chief James Comey Sunday for announcing a new review of Hillary Clintons emails just days before the presidential election, an action he says may have broken the law.Allegations Clinton put the United States at risk by using a private email server while secretary of state were thrust back into the spotlight Friday when Comey revealed a renewed FBI probe into the matter based on a previously unknown trove of emails. As soon as you came into possession of the slightest innuendo related to secretary Clinton, you rushed to publicize it in the most negative light possible, Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid said in a statement.Through your partisan actions, you may have broken the law, Reid said, alleging that Comey had violated the Hatch Act, which bars the FBI from influencing elections.Clinton has demanded the FBI director explain in detail why he had effectively reopened an inquiry declared complete in July, branding Comeys move deeply troubling so close to Election Day.According to US media, the probe was renewed after agents seized a laptop used by Clintons close aide, Huma Abedin, and her now estranged husband, Anthony Weiner. The disgraced former congressman who resigned in 2011 after sending explicit online messages is under investigation over allegations he sent sexual overtures to a 15-year-old girl. Both Clinton and her Republican rival Donald Trump have piled pressure on Comey to put his cards on the table and end speculation about the investigation before America goes to the polls on November 8.US networks reported Sunday that the FBI had obtained a warrant to search the emails. It formerly had a warrant only to search Weiners laptop for communication with the teenager.According to CNN, discovery of the emails occurred weeks ago although the FBI did not reveal the matter until Friday. While Clinton is still overwhelmingly expected to win the ballot, polls -- many of which were taken before the FBI email announcement -- showed the US election tightening Sunday. In the same memo, Reid also struck out at the FBI chief for sitting on explosive information about close ties and coordination between Donald Trump, his top advisors and the Russian government.I wrote to you months ago calling for this information to be released to the public, Reid said.

Djokovic rejuvenated by Murray top spot battle

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Novak Djokovic admitted Sunday that Andy Murrays dramatic last-gasp assault on his world number one ranking has rejuvenated a season which was limping into mediocrity for the 12-time major winner.Djokovic has suffered a worrying dip in form since winning his first French Open and completing the career Grand Slam in June.He had a shock early loss at Wimbledon followed by a first round exit at the Olympics and a runners-up spot at the US Open. But as the 29-year-old prepares to defend the Paris Masters title he has won for the past three years, he insists Murrays charge for the top has provided the fresh impetus he needs. It makes me want to go on court and fight for every point because there is something to win at the end, Djokovic said Sunday adding he felt rejuvenated and regenerated. If Djokovic reaches next Sundays final in Paris, he will retain his world number one ranking. But if he fails to make the championship match, then Murray will become the number one as long as the British star wins the title.Djokovic, who has admitted private issues contributed to his summer slump, believes Paris is the perfect place to revive his fortunes on his return to the French capital.Winning Roland Garros this year gave me a lot of joy but it required a lot of energy. I felt a little exhausted after and I was a little less motivated, said the Serb, who hasnt played since a semi-final defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut in the Shanghai Masters.I took a little time to think about all these things, to find a new motivation and a new ambition. Its in place. I feel good. Im happy to come back here to Paris. I hope to have a good week.Djokovic has a bye in the first round at the Paris Masters before facing either Nicolas Almagro or Gilles Muller.

Balotelli scores again as Nice stretch lead

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Mario Balotelli starred once again as clinical Nice opened up a six-point gap at the top of Ligue 1 with a 4-1 thrashing of Nantes on Sunday. The maverick forward, back in form after nightmare spells at Liverpool and AC Milan, scored his sixth league goal of the season and was involved in two others as Nice took their unbeaten run since the start of the season to 11 matches.Wylan Cyprien scored a brace and Alassane Plea also netted while Emiliano Sala replied for the visitors at the Allianz Riviera, as Nice played with panache and incision. We deserved to win but we had some difficult moments, particularly early on, said Nice coach Lucien Favre.Nantes had two good chances and if they had scored at that time, things might have been different.Favre made light of Nices six-point championship lead over Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain, adding of Balotelli: He had a full week of rest (after injury). But I say and repeat: there is still much work for him to do. Today he did some extra defensive work, which is positive. The league leaders were slow out of the blocks but soon began to take control of proceedings, with Balotelli, 26, at the heart of it as they opened the scoring. The Italy star ran on to Younes Belhandas chip over the top and although he was stopped in his tracks by desperate last-gasp defending, the ball broke to Cyprien to slot into the empty net on nine minutes.Nice were piling on the pressure and the Nantes backline cracked again as Balotelli ran onto a long ball from Jean Seri and calmly took a touch before placing the ball past Remy Riou and into the bottom corner.Nantes werent completely out of contention and Yacine Bammou should have done better than fire over from Lucas Limas cross 10 minutes before half-time.Nice kept coming, though, and Ricardo Pereiras goal-bound shot was blocked by defender Diego Carlos. But the hosts shot themselves in the foot at the start of the second period as Mathieu Bodmer tried to dribble the ball out of defence on the edge of his box.He was robbed by Sala, who stroked a sumptuous shot into the top corner on 47 minutes.Suddenly Nice were reeling and struggling to hold on against a rejuvenated Nantes, with Sala and Mariusz Stepinski spurning good chances. But the tide turned again on the hour mark as Plea rose ahead to head home Seris corner.Minutes later a sublime flick from Balotelli sent Pereira scampering towards goal and he pulled the ball back for Cyprien to drill home.Second-placed Monaco lost ground in the title race with a 1-1 draw at Saint-Etienne on Saturday.Kamil Glik put Monaco ahead after five minutes but the hosts pulled level just 13 minutes later through Loic Perrin.Champions Paris Saint-Germain are behind Monaco only on goal difference after winning 1-0 at Lille on Friday night thanks to a goal from Uruguay forward Edinson Cavani.Rudi Garcia is still looking for his first league win as Marseille coach after his side drew 0-0 with Bordeaux at the Stade Velodrome in his first home game.Marseille remain mired in mid-table in 10th.

Cricket: Ex-Australia spinner Brad Hogg considered suicide- book

Posted:

SYDNEY (AFP) - Former Australia Test spinner Brad Hogg has revealed in a new book that retirement and a marriage breakdown led him to contemplate ending his life. After seven Tests and being a key part of Australias 2003 and 2007 winning World Cups, Hogg said he had no other option than to initially retire from all forms of cricket in 2007-08 in a bid to save his marriage to former wife Andrea. In his autobiography, The Wrong Un, released on Monday, he details the depths he plummeted to in the next three years when, with the marriage over, he turned to alcohol and was unable to find contentment in an office job.I parked my car at (Fremantles) Port Beach and went for a walk, he writes.Id stare at the sea and think, I could swim out to that groyne (stone or concrete structure), and if I make it back, fine. If I dont make it back ... well, hard luck.I was prepared to let fate decide. I was in a really dark place. I did that drive four times. And each time I thought about doing something really drastic.Thinking and doing are two completely different things, thankfully. He bounced back and Hogg, one of crickets fun-loving characters, was an ever-present in Australias one-day side in the latter stages of his international career, taking 156 wickets and averaging 20.25 with the bat in 123 one-dayers.Last year he became the oldest player ever to feature in an Indian Premier League match at the age of 44 for the Kolkata Knight Riders. The quirky left-arm spinner, now 45, is still playing for the Melbourne Renegades in this seasons Big Bash League.

Tennis: Murray wins Vienna title to close on No.1 spot

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Andy Murray continued his march towards the world number one slot and ramped up the pressure on Novak Djokovic by winning the Vienna Open on Sunday. The 29-year-old Scot swept past Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-3, 7-6 (8/6) in the final to earn his seventh title of the year. The Olympic and Wimbledon champion can take over the world number one ranking from Djokovic if he wins next weeks Paris Masters and the Serb fails to reach the final. He can also take over top spot if he reaches the final and Djokovic loses before the semis in the French capital.Murray took his recent run to 15 straight victories, in which he has picked up the China Open and Shanghai Masters titles as well.He now has 42 career titles and a second in Vienna, after also winning in 2014.I think I played my best tennis of the tournament today, said Murray, who praised Tsongas fighting spirit in the second set.Jo fought well and started playing a lot better. He was more aggressive and taking some more chances and making the shots.Murray broke early in each set before his only blip allowed the Frenchman and sixth seed to break back and level at 4-4 in the second set.It was a 14th defeat in 16 meetings with Murray for Tsonga, whose run to the final did at least keep alive his slim hopes of reaching the season-ending World Tour Finals in London.Tsonga said he would be happy to see Murray take the world number spot in Paris next week -- on one condition.Next week you have a chance maybe to be the number one. I hope its going to be the case, except if I play against you in the final

World No.1 Kerber to face Slovakia's Cibulkova in last WTA match of the year

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Newly crowned world number one Angelique Kerber crushed the defending champion Agnieszka Radwanska 6-2 6-1 on Saturday to advance to the final of the WTAs end-of-season championship against Slovakias Dominika Cibulkova.A surprise finalist, Cibulkova booked her spot in the title match when she fought back from the brink of defeat to overhaul a weary Svetlana Kuznetsova 1-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in a thriller at Singapores Indoor Stadium.Cibulkova lost to Kerber in the round-robin phase last Sunday and will have her work cut out for her beating the German in Sundays final after she produced another clinical display against Radwanska.Kerber dominated Radwanska from the outset, giving the Pole few chances to play her own game as she took control of the baseline rallies and cruised to victory in an hour and a quarter. She had an answer for everything. Shes not giving anything for free, Radwanska said. Thats what makes her one of the best players in the world and the best this year.Unbeaten in four matches this week, Kerber will go into Sundays final as a strong favourite as she seeks to add the WTA Finals title to her Australian Open and US Open crowns. The pair have played each other nine times, with Cibulkova winning the first four and Kerber the last five meetings. Its a little bit weird to play against one opponent twice in one tournament, Kerber said. This never happened before for me but Im looking forward to play against her.The first match here was really tight and close, and she has a lot of confidence from the last two matches she won.Voted the WTAs comeback player of the year after slumping to 66th in the world rankings in February, Cibulkova earned her place in the final the hard way.She won this months Linz Open in Austria to qualify for the elite eight-player event then snuck into the semis on a countback after losing her first two round-robin matches, thanks in part to Kerber who beat Madison Keys in straight sets to allow Cibulkova to go through to the last four.Theres a lot of positive emotions, Cibulkova said after beating Kuznetsova in a match that began slowly but escalated into a nail biter. The match wasnt going my way all the time but I managed to win it, even (when) I was down, even (when) she was playing really good tennis. There were some anxious moments for the 27-year-old Cibulkova when she lost four games in a row to trail 4-2 in the deciding set but she rediscovered her form at the perfect time and reeled off the last four games on the trot to seal victory and end Kuznetsovas own fairytale run.The oldest woman in the tournament at 31, Kuznetsova had to win the Kremlin Cup in Moscow last week just to qualify for the $7 million event and then won two gruelling three-set encounters to reach the semis.Battling exhaustion, she lost her final round-robin match against French Open champion Garbine Muguruza on Friday before finally running out of gas against Cibulkova. Its not worth thinking about if Im tired, if Im fatigued, Kuznetsova said. Whatever it is, Im not going to make any excuses. I just did all I could and I was a little bit short in the end.

Andy Murray to face Tsonga in the ATP Vienna final

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - Andy Murray was given a helping hand in his bid to snatch the world number one spot when Spanish veteran David Ferrer withdrew from their Vienna semi-final on Saturday with a leg injury.Wimbledon and Olympic champion Murray will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Sundays final after the Frenchman saved a match point in a gruelling 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (8/6) victory over Ivo Karlovic.Murray, the 2014 Vienna title winner, can snatch Novak Djokovics world number one ranking if he wins Sundays final as well as next weeks Paris Masters. However, even if Murray succeeds on both fronts, Djokovic must still lose before the final in the French capital for the British star to take the top spot.I knew that David had an injury at the beginning of the week, said Murray. He played a very long match yesterday (against Victor Troicki), so that was unfortunate for him. Hes one of the more robust players and doesnt often have too many niggles. He must have been in quite a bit of pain. Its unfortunate for him, but Ill try to get ready for the final and use today as a rest day.It will be a hard match, but Im motivated to finish the season strong. Being in another final after a tough week is good.Defending champion Ferrer, whose only other career match withdrawal came in 2009, said he handed Murray a walkover in order not to cause long-term damage to his left leg. After yesterdays match, I finished with an injury in my left leg, said Ferrer. The problem is in the muscle and now I will wait 48 hours for the MRI results. I have to be ready for next season.Tsonga, the 2011 champion in Vienna, will look to overturn a four-match losing streak against Murray in Sundays final.Murray leads their head-to-head 13-2, a record which includes their only meeting in 2016 in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon.

Kei Nishikori saved two match points to reach Basel final

Posted:

BASEL, Switzerland, Oct 29, 2016 (AFP) - Kei Nishikori saved two match points to defeat Gilles Muller 4-6, 7-6 (7/3), 6-3 on Saturday to make the Basel ATP final where he will face Marin Cilic who battled past qualifier Mischa Zverev 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.Japanes star Nishikori performed his escape act in the second set against Luxembourgs big hitter, who rained down 20 aces in the two-and-a-quarter-hour thriller.Third-seeded Nishikori saved the first match point with a perfectly timed lob; his second was an ace.I saw that he was almost touching the net, but my arm was shaking as it was match point, Nishikori said of the winner that pulled the score level 5-5 in the second set. I was pretty confident with the lob.Its never easy to save two match points -- I was happy to get through this tight moment. After his heroics in the second set, Nishikori was able to steady his game to earn a hard-earned win over Muller, ranked 37.I got more comfortable and played a good match. The balls fly a lot here, you really have to hit the ball, said a relieved Nishikori.Muller has a great serve. Im just happy to have won the match.Nishikori has already qualified for next months ATP World Tour Finals in London for a third straight edition. The world number five will aim for only his second title of the season on Sunday when he plays Cilic in a re-run of the 2014 US Open final won by the Croatian. Its tough to think of the past, but when I remember that match it gives me some guidance about how to play this next one, Cilic said. It will be another tight match like others weve played.Im looking forward to the final.Cilic, who beat Zverev with 16 aces, stands 4-7 against Nishikori.Cilic now stands provisional ninth for the eight-man field at the Tour Finals after passing Tomas Berdych in the table.

Barcelona win 1-0 but manager Enrique wants better performance

BARCELONA (AFP) - Barcelona coach Luis Enrique insisted his side will need an improved display when faced with the very different challenge of former Barca boss Pep Guardiolas Manchester City after labouring to a 1-0 win over Granada on Saturday.Barca travel to Manchester on Tuesday having thrashed Guardiolas men 4-0 less than two weeks ago to take a commanding lead of Champions League Group C thanks to a Lionel Messi hat-trick.However, Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar endured a rare off night in front of goal as midfielder Rafinha bagged the only goal against an ultra defensive-minded Granada. Now we will go to Manchester and in theory we will have a team that presses us high and well be left almost one against one, said Enrique. You have to be very efficient and precise to overcome that pressure. If you overcome it, you are going to have chances and, if not, the opponent will win the ball in your half with quality players. In contrast to their Champions League position, Barca trail eternal rivals Real Madrid by two points at the top of La Liga after 10 games. However, with four wins in a row in all competitions, Enrique believes Barca are headed in the right direction. We are close to the top but we are behind, he added. There are still almost all the clashes between the title rivals to come, but I think we are headed in the right direction in La Liga and the Champions League.Rafinhas fine overhead finish was his fifth goal in as many La Liga games as the Brazilian continues to make the most of his opportunities in a Barca squad ravaged by injuries. And Enrique stressed the importance of goals from midfield to back up the threat posed by Messi, Suarez and Neymar.Hes getting into the box more which is something we always ask of midfield players.Thats the important thing. We have three unique, incomparable players up front, but the more players we can have taking chances and getting into the box the better. It is always a boost for the midfield players to score goals and in Rafas case he is a player that arrives very well from deep.

Ronaldo scores hat-trick as Real Madrid extend their lead on top

Posted:

MADRID (AFP) - Cristiano Ronaldo returned to goalscoring form with his first hat-trick of the season despite also missing a penalty as Real Madrid extended their lead at the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win at Alaves on Saturday.Ronaldos wayward form in recent weeks had come under the spotlight, but he turned the game around after Deyverson had put Alaves into a shock early lead. The Portuguese levelled from the penalty spot before his deflected effort put Madrid ahead at the break.Ronaldo saw another penalty saved 12 minutes from time, but wasnt to be denied when he slammed home Marcelos cut-back after Alvaro Moratas cushioned lob had made the game safe.Real now lead Sevilla by three points at the top of the table and Barcelona by five. However, Barca can cut the gap back to two points with victory at home to Granada later on Saturday.Reals unbeaten run stretches to 26 matches, but their defensive struggles continued in Vitoria as Zinedine Zidanes men got off to the worst possible start when Deyverson pounced on an error from Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas to slot Alaves into a seventh minute lead.Gareth Bale had a goal ruled out for offside as Real sought an immediate response. However, the visitors needed two slices of fortune to turn the game around before half-time.Firstly, Deyverson was adjudged to have handled a Bale free-kick inside his own area and Ronaldo slotted home the penalty.Ronaldos second came 16 minutes later when his low effort from outside the area deflected off Zouhair Feddal and flew into the far corner.Alaves had a huge chance to level just two minutes after the restart when Victor Camarasa skipped past Raphael Varane, but shot straight at Navas.Madrid barely threatened in the second-half until the last 15 minutes when they finally put the game beyond Alaves reach.Ronaldo was hauled down inside the penalty area from a corner, but saw his second spot-kick saved by Fernando Pacheco.Morata again made his presence felt off the bench as he raced onto Marcelos through ball and lobbed the onrushing Pacheco to make it 3-1.And Marcelo was involved again in the fourth as he and Ronaldo exchanged passes before the latter smashed home two minutes from time.Earlier, Sevillas struggles away from home continued in a 1-1 draw at Sporting Gijon.Sevilla snapped a 22-game winless streak on the road in their last away league game at Leganes and got off to the perfect start in Asturias when Luciano Vietto raced onto Wissam Ben Yedders flick-on to dink home his fourth goal of the season.Sporting are now without a win in seven matches, but moved out of the relegation zone as Moi Gomez volleyed home Roberto Canellas cross for a share of the points.

Arsenal and Manchester City register victories

LONDON (AFP) - Sergio Aguero and Ilkay Gundogan each scored twice as Manchester City crushed West Bromwich Albion 4-0 on Saturday to reclaim first place in the Premier League from Arsenal.Arsene Wengers side won 4-1 at Sunderland, with substitute Olivier Giroud and Alexis Sanchez both scoring twice, but Citys win kept Pep Guardiolas side top on goal difference.Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands and Ander Herrera was dismissed as Manchester United drew 0-0 with Burnley despite dominating the game, while champions Leicester City drew 1-1 at Tottenham Hotspur. As well as keeping them top, Citys one-sided victory at The Hawthorns brought Guardiola out of a six-game winless run -- the longest such sequence of his managerial career.Guardiola, whose side host former club Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday, made eight changes to his starting XI from Wednesdays 1-0 League Cup defeat at Manchester United.Aguero was among the players to return to the starting line-up and his first-half brace effectively settled the game.He broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, slamming a shot between Ben Fosters legs from Gundogans pass, and doubled his tally nine minutes later with a stunning shot from the edge of the box.The goals ended Agueros six-game scoring drought and lifted his City tally to 149 -- one more than club great Francis Lee.Aguero teed up Gundogan for Citys third in the 79th minute and the former Borussia Dortmund midfielder sealed victory in the last minute of normal time.Arsenal had earlier strolled to victory at bottom club Sunderland, who are now seven points from safety and without a win after 10 league games.Sanchez put Arsenal in front in the 19th minute with a header from an Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain cross.Jermain Defoe equalised from the spot in the 65th minute after Petr Cech was booked for impeding Duncan Watmore. But Giroud equalised six minutes later, volleying in a Kieran Gibbs cross with his first touch after coming on.The France striker struck again five minutes later, a looping header from Mesut Ozils corner, and Sanchez completed the scoring two minutes after that with a neat close-range finish.Tottenham were left three points off the pace in fourth place after drawing at home to Leicester, who climb one place to 11th.Vincent Janssen gave Spurs the lead with a 44th-minute penalty, but Ahmed Musa equalised early in the second period, sliding in bravely to apply the finishing touch to Jamie Vardys cross.Liverpool can join City and Arsenal on 23 points if they win at Crystal Palace later on Saturday.Manchester Uniteds title hopes faded a little after their stalemate with Burnley left them eight points off top spot in eighth place.Former United goalkeeper Tom Heaton was Burnleys saviour, producing stunning saves from Jesse Lingard, Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.United also hit the woodwork in the second half through Juan Mata and Ibrahimovic.Mourinho was sent to the stands at half-time, reportedly after complaining about referee Mark Clattenburgs failure to award Matteo Darmian a penalty.Herrera was sent off in the 70th minute after being shown a second yellow card for sliding in on Dean Marney.Watford stole above United into seventh place after edging Hull City 1-0 courtesy of a late Michael Dawson own goal.Middlesbrough pulled clear of the relegation places after beating Bournemouth 2-0 through a memorable Gaston Ramirez solo goal and a Stewart Downing strike.

Tennis: Murray breezes past Isner for seventh time

Posted:

VIENNA (AFP) - Andy Murray defeated injured John Isner for the seventh time in seven meetings Friday to reach the Vienna semi-finals and take another step closer to deposing Novak Djokovic as world number one.Murray, the 2014 champion in the Austrian capital, cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over the big American who required treatment on his blistered right hand early in the second set.World number two Murray, who now has 68 wins in 2016 and is on a 14-match win streak, broke serve three times in a dominant opening set, committing just one unforced error to Isners 20.By the end of the one-sided affair, Murrays error count was just 10 to 35 to the outclassed American.Murray needs to win the Vienna title on Sunday, as well as next weeks Paris Masters, to have a chance to knock Djokovic off the world top spot.On Saturday, the 29-year-old faces defending champion and fifth seed David Ferrer who saved a match point and recovered from a break down to beat Serbias Viktor Troicki 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.Ferrer, who is attempting to extend a streak which has seen him reach at least one final in each of the past 11 years, will be up against it facing Murray -- he trails 6-14 with the Scot winning the last seven.Big-serving Ivo Karlovic saved a match point and fired 29 aces to defeat Russias Karen Khachanov 6-7 (5/7), 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 to reach the semi-finals.Karlovic, 17 years older than his 20-year-old opponent, saved the match point in the 12th game of the second set.The Croatian veteran will next face sixth seed and 2011 champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France who defeated Spains Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 7-6 (7/5).Karlovic now has a season-leading 1,081 aces.

Tennis: Radwanska seals last semi spot at WTA Finals

Posted:

SINGAPORE (AFP) - Polands Agnieszka Radwanska overpowered Karolina Pliskova 7-5 6-3 on Friday to clinch the last available place in the semi-finals of the WTA tour championship and stay on course to defend the title she won last year.Radwanksa made a stunning comeback to win the 2015 tournament despite losing her first two round-robin matches and made it through to the last four again after having lost her opening match by beating the big-serving Pliskova in a sudden-death showdown.I think that was simple, Radwanska said. You win, youre still there. You lose, youre out. Not much math here.I definitely knew I had to play my best tennis against her. She was showing only good tennis this week as well. The 27-year-old Pole will now face her good friend, world number one Angelique Kerber, in Saturdays semis with the winner to play either Russias Svetlana Kuznetsova or Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia.Kuznetsova suffered her first loss of the tournament on Friday when she was beaten 3-6 6-0 6-1 by Spains French Open champion Garbine Muguruza but the result had no bearing on the semis with the Russian already assured of finishing top of the White Group and Muguruza out of contention after losing her first two matches.I have to be honest, going into this match was extremely hard for me, Muguruza said.At the end, my desire of wanting to be here and competing against the best, was a challenge for me today to see how I was going to react.Im very happy with the way I played today, the way I handled the match. A victory like today is going to keep me a little bit happier. It was a very tough tournament.Pliskova, who qualified for the elite end-of-season event when she reached the final of the US Open last month, led 4-2 in the opening set and was also a break up in the second before the more experienced Radwanska took control on the key points.Radwanksa has never lost to Pliskova in seven meetings and she capitalised on the Czechs 29 unforced errors, which included hitting two routine overheads into the net late in the second set.In this tournament, with the best eight players, you see that every match is close. Its just decided by a few balls, Pliskova said. She also knew she has to win. She always beats me, so I just believed that she might miss in the close moments a little bit but she didnt. I think she just controlled the whole match.Kuznetsova finally ran out of steam after winning a tournament in Moscow last weekend just to qualify for the WTA Finals then winning two gruelling matches at Singapores Indoor Stadium. The 31-year-old seemed to be in cruise control after she took the opening set against Muguruza but won just one game in the last two sets as the physical effects of the past week began to take a toll.Ive done the most important job in the past matches, Kuznetsova said. You definitely dont want to lose the match. You try to fight (but) sometimes the lack of energy just wont let you do that.

Tennis: Nishikori ends del Potro's Basel run

Posted:

BASEL (AFP) - Two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro went down swinging with 14 aces in a 7-5, 6-4 quarter-final loss to Kei Nishikori at the Swiss Indoors on Friday.Defeat in just under two hours wrapped up the ATP season for the Argentine, who will skip next weeks Paris Masters to return home to train for the Davis Cup final against Croatia.Nishikori will Saturday play to reach his second Basel final -- he lost the 2011 title match to Roger Federer -- when he takes on Gilles Muller, a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) winner over Argentine Federico Delbonis.Top seed Stan Wawrinka was playing qualifier Mischa Zverev in a later quarter-final while World Tour Finals hopeful Marin Cilic was bidding to reach the semi-finals as he played Spains Marcel Granollers. Wild card Del Potro, whose ranking of 42 is 1,000 places better than in February when he returned after almost a year of wrist problems and surgery, lost for the first time to third seed Nishikori. The pair last played four years ago at the London Olympics.Nishikori dealt out only seven aces, but fired his last one to earn a pair of match points -- one was enough as he put away a volley winner at the net. This was my best match of the week, said Nishikori as he ended a 12-match win streak for Del Potro at the Basel St Jakobshalle venue where the South American claimed the 2012 and 2013 titles over Federer. It was a tough match. I had so many chances, so many break points that I could not convert, said Nishikori, who fended off all eight break points against his serve.I played good tactics today, everything was working well.Del Potro was pleased with his week which came after he lifted his first title in nearly three years at Stockholm last Sunday.Ive been trying to fix my problems for the past two years, and I didnt expect to win a title at this moment in my career. Its still a motivation for looking forward to the future.

Eight injured in plane fire at Chicago airport

Posted:

CHICAGO (AFP) - Eight people were injured when an American Airlines Boeing 767 bound for Miami caught fire Friday as it attempted to take off from Chicagos OHare airport, the company said. The blaze broke out on American Airlines Flight 383 -- with 161 passengers and nine crew on board -- as the plane was on the runway at one of the nations busiest airports.Seven passengers and one flight attendant suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, the airline said.We are taking care of our customers and crew and are re-accommodating our passengers on another flight to Miami this evening, the airline said. The cause of the incident was not immediately clear, with the Federal Aviation Administration and the airline offering conflicting information. The FAA said the plane suffered a tire blowout, but spokesman Tony Molinaro told AFP that that information was preliminary and based on initial reports from the planes pilots. In a written statement, American Airlines blamed the incident on an engine-related issue.Bystanders posted photos and videos on social media showing black smoke billowing from the airliner. One video showed passengers coming down emergency slides and running away from the aircraft, with black smoke and flames visible on the right side of the plane.Emergency crews surrounded the jet, which appeared to be intact on the runway, though its right side and right wing were charred. The FAA said it was investigating the incident and the National Transportation Safety Board had been notified.Service was not interrupted at OHare.

Vettel hands Ferrari boost, Hamilton edges Rosberg

Posted:

MEXICO CITY (AFP) - Sebastian Vettel added the prospect of another unexpected dimension to the drivers title battle on Friday when he put his Ferrari on top of the times in second free practice for this weekends Mexican Grand Prix. The four-time champion was fastest with a best lap in one minute and 19.790 seconds -- just 0.004 seconds quicker than Hamilton who, in turn, was three-tenths of a second ahead of his championship leading Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg. If he can maintain that speed and form, Vettel could not only influence the result of Sundays race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, but also play a key part in the outcome of the championship duel between the Briton and the German.Yes, of course, I am happy, but it is Friday and maybe too early to talk like that, said Vettel.I think we need to be realistic. I dont think Lewis had the best of laps today. It didnt look particularly good so I think he has a little bit more in his pocket so lets be realistic. But if we can do this again and be here again, at the front, I will take that. It has been a good day for us. We had the pace and we had no problems.Vettels unexpected revivial in the thin air of the high-altitude circuit created the prospect of Ferrari playing a role in the outcome of the race and, possibly, splitting the two Mercedes drivers.Rosberg goes into the race with a lead of 26 points with three races remaining knowing that if he wins on Sunday he can take his maiden title if Hamilton fails to score more than a single point.Defending three-time world champion Hamilton made three attempts to beat Vettels time without success, but did a steady job throughout the day. Both Mercedes drivers were locked in intense race preparations with their race teams as they concentrated on set-up and tyres in particular.Kimi Raikkonen endorsed the improvement by the Italian team by clocking the fourth best time in the second Ferrari, 0.469 seconds down, ahead of fifth-placed Australian Daniel Ricciardo in the leading Red Bull.Ricciardo conceded that he felt it may be more difficult for Red Bull to impress at the Mexican circuit than they have at other recent events. It may not be easy, but we know from previous races that anything can happen and if we can get the best from the tyres we can be thereabouts. I am sure we are going to be quick in race trim.Asked about his possible role as king-maker, he said he had no intention of thinking about it and would concentrate on racing hard as usual.I will treat it the same as always and race hard, he said. The championship will be settled over the 21 races and thats what will happen. Lets see.Nico Hulkenberg was sixth for Force India ahead of Max Verstappen in the second Red Bull, the Dutch teenager setting his best laps on the medium tyres while most of his rivals were running on super-softs.Valtteri Bottas was eighth for Williams, ahead of the two Spaniards, Carlos Sainz of Toro Rosso and two-time champion Ferando Alonso of McLaren-Honda.Williams team boss Frank Williams was not in Mexico as he remained in hospital in England where he was reported to be recovering from pneumonia. His daughter Claire Williams, the teams deputy chief, was also absent having decided to stay with him.

Mourinho bars Rooney from Manchester United escape

Posted:

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom (AFP) - Wayne Rooney will not be allowed to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window despite his frustrations at losing his starting place at Old Trafford and interest from his former club Everton.Ronald Koeman, in charge at the club Rooney left to join United in the summer of 2004, has become the first Premier League manager to express an interest in signing the England captain should Jose Mourinho be prepared to allow him to leave.Mourinho stated categorically not only will Rooney, 31, be told to forget leaving but he also expects the experienced veteran to play a key role in his attempts to return United to the top of the English game.I know he can still play at the highest level. I know hes the type of player I need, said Mourinho. He can play at the top level. I cant say whats going to happen when hes 32, 3, 4, 5 but what I can say is that hes a very good player, a very important player for us. Hes going nowhere. We like him, he likes us. Hes not happy in the last matches because he was on the bench but I think he is even unhappier when hes not on the bench because hes been injured and has to stay in the stands. There are no problems at all. Hes my captain. He is the team captain. He behaves like that.In all my career I have had just a couple of players, they didnt want to play and sometimes they wanted to hide when things got hotter.Koeman had earlier talked, in general terms, about a potential interest in Rooney, who left Goodison as a 19-year-old in a 20 million transfer in the summer of 2004.Even when we get one time the possibility that Rooney is an option for Everton, Im very pleased, said Koeman.I am not at United, I dont see sessions and every game. It is a decision of the manager of Manchester United. But he is 31, he is not finished, he still has two or three years at least at the highest level.Wayne Rooney is a top player and, of course, if there is one day when he is available of course we would like to have him but it is too early and I dont like to speak about players who are under contract at other teams.Earlier in the week, reports had suggested Mourinho might be prepared to give Koeman -- and other rivals -- encouragement in their hopes of luring Rooney away from Old Trafford. But Mourinho moved to quickly dispel such suggestions, although he accepts the forward, who lost his starting place on the national team shortly after suffering a similar fate with his club, has found this a trying period in his career.I think hes a human being like everybody else. He has family, like everybody else, he said.He has kids, the oldest one at an age where he can read, he can feel, he gets affected by that. Its just human nature but I think hes a big boy, a big character. He copes with the situation.

Stock market closes lower on FBI probe into Clinton emails

Posted:

NEW YORK (AFP) - The FBI bombshell that it is reopening the investigation into US presidential candidate Hillary Clintons email scandal jolted markets and sent US stocks, the dollar and oil prices lower Friday.Eleven days before the US election, Wall Street had been comfortably in positive territory prior to the news that Federal Bureau of Investigation head James Comey was restarting the probe into Clintons use of a private email server while serving as secretary of state.Clinton, the Democratic nominee, has been the markets preferred choice over Republican Donald Trump, viewed by many investors as unpredictable. Analysts said the development raises the chances of a Trump win, after weeks during which Clinton handily led the polls. One of the things we felt more certain about over the course of the last week or two has been the result at the top of the ballot, and this probably throws that into question, said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities.Thats not going to be good for markets. And Chris Low of FTN Financial, said the news at the very least it is going to require some new thinking ahead of the November 8 presidential elections, leaving little time for the FBI to resolve the matter.I think that is what is motivating people to sell because it just creates a huge amount of uncertainty. The dollar plunged against all the major currencies after the FBI announcement, but regained some territory before the close. The Mexican peso sank against the dollar but also later rebounded slightly.Meanwhile oil prices were hit with a double whammy of the FBI news and uncertainty over OPECs ability to negotiate production limits and win the cooperation of non-cartel producers. The Brent price dropped back below $50 as talks in Vienna failed to work out details of the tentative deal reached last month, although they are expected to continue over the weekend.Weve got some news out of OPEC and things are still very complicating and it sounds like the agreement to come to some sort of freeze or cut is likely not going to happen, said Oliver Sloup of iiTrader.com.European markets wobbled ahead of a raft of data and policy decisions in the week ahead.Frankfurt, London and Paris diverged, while in Asia, Hong Kong and Shanghai ended just down and Tokyo up marginally. The Bank of Japan and the Reserve Bank of Australia will deliver their latest interest rate calls Tuesday, followed by the US Federal Reserve Wednesday and the Bank of England Thursday. The eurozone releases third quarter GDP Monday, and the US releases the critical October jobs report Friday.New York - Dow: DOWN 0.2 percent to 18,161.19 (close)New York - S&P 500: DOWN 0.1 percent to 2,126.41 (close)New York - Nasdaq: DOWN 0.5 percent to 5,190.10 (close)London - FTSE 100: UP 0.1 percent at 6,996.26 points (close)Frankfurt - DAX 30: DOWN 0.2 percent at 10,696.19 (close)Paris - CAC 40: UP 0.3 percent at 4,548.58 (close)EURO STOXX 50: DOWN 0.2 percent to 3,079.24 (close)Tokyo - Nikkei 225: UP 0.6 percent at 17,446.41 (close)Hong Kong - Hang Seng: DOWN 0.8 percent at 22,954.81 (close)Shanghai - Composite: DOWN 0.3 percent at 3,104.27 (close)Euro/dollar: UP to $1.0987 from $1.0898 ThursdayDollar/yen: DOWN to 104.73 yen from 105.20 yenPound/dollar: UP to $1.2187 from $1.2166Euro/pound: UP to 90.16 pence from 89.57 penceOil - West Texas Intermediate: DOWN $1.02 to $48.70 per barrelOil - Brent North Sea: DOWN 76 cents at $49.71

BASEL, Switzerland (AFP) - Top seed and US Open champion Stan Wawrinka slumped to a shock 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 defeat to German qualifier Mischa Zverev on Friday, limping out of the Swiss Indoors event in the quarter-finals.Zverev, 29, and ranked 72 in the world, will face either Croatian fourth seed Marin Cilic or Spains Marcel Granollers for a place in the final.Wawrinka has a poor history at the Swiss tournament played in Roger Federers hometown, despite playing the event for 13 of the last 14 years. He ended a run of four straight first-round defeats with a pair of wins this week having made his only real impression in 2011 with a semi-final against Federer.Wawrinka was broken for 2-5 in the first set, got the tie back level by winning the second before going down a double break in the decider on his way to defeat in just under two hours.Two-time champion Juan Martin del Potro hit 14 aces but still went down to a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Kei Nishikori.Defeat wrapped up the ATP season for the Argentine, who will skip next weeks Paris Masters to return home to train for the Davis Cup final against Croatia.Nishikori will Saturday play to reach his second Basel final -- he lost the 2011 title match to Federer -- when he takes on Gilles Muller, a 6-7 (4/7), 6-4, 7-6 (7/3) winner over Argentine Federico Delbonis.Wild card Del Potro, whose ranking of 42 is 1,000 places better than in February when he returned after almost a year of wrist problems and surgery, lost for the first time to third seed Nishikori. Its still a motivation for looking forward to the future.I felt exhausted during the whole match, I couldnt fight as I wanted. I had chances at the start of the first set, but Kei played very smart.Ive played so many matches, its too much for me. But Im finishing the season well, Im so glad for that.

Ton-up Tamim has no defence for teammates

DHAKA (AFP) - Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal made no attempt to defend his teammates who were unable to build on his century in the first innings of the second Test against England on Friday. In a topsy-turvy days play in Dhaka, opener Tamim made 104 runs off 147 balls while Mominul Haque scored 66 as the hosts surged to what should have been a commanding score of 171 for one.But Tamims dismissal, lbw to Moeen Ali, sparked a spectacular collapse, as Bangladesh lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs and were folded for 220 with seven of their batsmen failing to make double figures.I cant give an explanation for this collapse, Tamim said after opening days play.We played some wrong shots, some were good deliveries, but if we had scored 100 more runs from what we got, the game would have been in our favour. The ball started to spin after 45 overs, but this can happen, he said.Ali finished with 5-57 but Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes also had their share of credit as they picked up five wickets together to expedite the collapse.England then suffered their own mini-collapse as they were reduced to 50 for three before rain brought an early end to proceedings, 11.3 overs before the scheduled close of play. The way the wickets fell today, my century has suddenly become special, said Tamim, who hit 12 boundaries. If we could have added 50 runs to our 170-run stand...it would have been better for the team. The blame lies with everyone, from myself to Rabbi (last man Kamrul Islam). But we got three crucial wickets so we could still make a game of it tomorrow, he said.Tamim took 20 balls to get off the mark but grew in confidence to bring his century in style hitting Moeen for back-to-back fours through cover. He said he made an error of judgement after reaching three figure mark that cost him his wicket. He padded up a delivery in Moeens next over without offering any shot and umpire raised the finger without any delay. He unsuccessfully reviewed the call but replay showed ball was going to brush off his leg stump, ending his highly impressive innings rather on a disappointing note. It was the third ball I had left like that. I wasnt doing it on purpose, he said.In the Chittagong wicket, the ball was turning from that spot so maybe I was thinking about it. I made the mistake. I should have offered a shot, he said.

England's Moeen rejoices success as bowler

DHAKA (AFP) - Off-spinner Moeen Ali said he has become more mature as a bowler these days after the second five-wicket haul of his career helped England dismiss Bangladesh for 220 runs and gain the edge in the second Test in Dhaka on Friday.England were looking for someone to bail them out when Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal hit a fluent century and threatened to put them under heaps of runs with his confident batting.Moeen responded by dismissing Tamim for 104 and then bowling out his partner in 170-run second wicket stand Mominul Haque for 66 to trigger a dramatic Bangladesh collapse. He finished with 5-57 as Bangladesh lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs with seven of their batsmen failing to make double figure.I dont really have that much success as a spinner but I think the pace (in which) I bowl is used to test quality batters, that helps, he said.Im trying to get more consistent...Im nowhere near where I want to be as a spinner but I feel the 30 games helped me a little bit, he said.Ali, whose only previous five-wicket haul in 33 Tests came against India, said he owed his success to his five maiden overs in his third spell after the lunch break, which built some pressure on Bangladeshi batsmen.Im obviously happy to get the five wickets but I was more happy that I bowled a few maidens which I dont normally do often, he said.I tried to bowl as tight as I could today in my third spell and I think today that paid off really well.Moeen said they planned at the lunch break to keep it tight and not lose their patience, which finally brought them success.Tamim hit him for two back-to-back fours to complete his century but Ali insisted it could not demoralise him. Ive been hit plenty of times, so I dont get too down, he said.I just try and bowl my next ball as best as I can. When they were 170-1 (after) lunch we spoke about showing some character and trying to bowl as tight as we can, to slow it down a little bit if we can.We always feel that if we can get a couple of wickets, then we can bowl them out, he said.Moeen felt the game was left in the balance after Bangladesh managed to take three key England wickets in the evening session to leave the visitors at 50-3 at stumps on the first day.England can wrestle ahead provided they can get a few good partnerships, said Moeen, who was unbeaten with two with the bat overnight. Its 50-50 at the minutes. a couple of big partnerships and, if we can go close or go past their score, were right in the game, he said.

England stutter after Bangladesh collapse

DHAKA (AFP) - Tamim Iqbal scored his eighth Test century before Moeen Ali took 5-57 to spark a spectacular collapse as England dismissed Bangladesh for 220 runs on the first day of the second Test Friday. In a topsy-turvy days play in Dhaka, opener Tamim made a quickfire 104 off 147 balls while Mominul Haque scored 66 as the hosts surged to what should have been a commanding score of 171 for one.But Tamims dismissal, lbw to Ali, sparked a spectacular collapse, as Bangladesh lost their last nine wickets for 49 runs with seven of their batsmen failing to make double figures.England then suffered their own mini-collapse as they were reduced to 50 for three before rain brought an early end to proceedings, 11.3 overs before the scheduled close of play at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.Shakib Al Hasan removed Ben Duckett for seven before young Mehedi Hasan ended Alastair Cooks innings at 14 through lbw.Cook, who equalled Michael Athertons record of 54 Tests as England captain at the start of play, was initially given not out but the decision was overturned after Bangladesh reviewed.Mehedi then dismissed Gary Ballance for nine, the batsmans third single figure score of the series, to bring Bangladesh right back into the game, with England still trailing them by 170 runs. Ali was unbeaten on two at the close, leaving him at the centre stage at the start of day two of the Test after his starring role in the drama of the opening day.Its a good cricket game at the end of the day, said AliObviously losing three wickets at the end put us back a little bit ... I think its 50-50 at the minute.Tamim and Mominul dominated the morning session after Woakes earned England an early breakthrough removing opener Imrul Kayes for one, with Duckett taking a spectacular catch at point.Tamim smashed 12 boundaries but he became Alis first victim of the day shortly after driving the same bowler for back-to-back fours through the cover to bring up his third century in six Tests against England. It ended his 170-run stand with Mominul, who had also looked solid until he too was bowled by Ali for 66.The way the wickets fell today, my century has suddenly become special, Tamim said after the first day.The blame lies with everyone, from myself to Rabbi (last man Kamrul Islam). But we got three crucial wickets so we could still make a game of it tomorrow. The all-rounders Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes shared the other five wickets as the tourists tightened the noose on a Bangladeshi side still reeling from the disappointment of losing the first Test by just 22 runs.Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim had called on his team before the start of the Test to show more consistency and learn how to drive home their advantage at key points in matches. But the rapid succession of wickets in the afternoon session pointed to Bangladeshs continued frailty in high-pressure situations, severely damaging their hopes of squaring the two-match series.England made two changes to the team that won the first Test last Monday in Chittagong, with left-arm spinner Zafar Ansari handed a Test debut for Gareth Batty and paceman Steven Finn coming in for Stuart Broad who has been rested.Bangladesh picked all-rounder Shuvagata Hom ahead of Shafiul Islam in their only change. They are playing with just one specialist fast bowler.
