Bayliss says no turning back for 'bold' England

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England coach Trevor Bayliss has insisted that the tournament hosts will stick with their aggressive approach during the Champions Trophy despite a chastening defeat by South Africa.Baylisss men suffered a seven-wicket loss at Lords on Monday in their final one-day international before they launch the Champions Trophy against Bangladesh across London at the Oval on Thursday. The reverse was notable for England slumping to 20 for six in the first five overs -- the worst start by any side in ODI cricket history.Several batsmen tried to hit their way out of trouble against Kagiso Rabada and Wayne Parnell despite accurate bowling from the new-ball duo made more dangerous by cloudy skies and a green-tinged pitch.Afterwards, England captain Eoin Morgan was critical of the strip prepared at his Lords home ground. But overcast conditions, which aid swing bowling, are beyond anyones control and it may be that batsmen need to play themselves in a bit first in such circumstances, as Englands Jonny Bairstow did while top-scoring for the hosts with a fifty at Lords.Australian coach Bayliss, however, was keen Mondays reverse does not lead to a policy change given Englands impressive white-ball revival in the two years since a defeat by Bangladesh sealed their first-round exit from the 2015 World Cup.I havent seen a team win a global tournament playing defensively, said Bayliss. Its always a team that backs itself and plays bold cricket, the former Sri Lanka coach added. From that point of view the message wont change.Bayliss has also emphasised the need for consistency in selection, but that will be put to the test as England ponder whether to stick with struggling opener Jason Roy, who plays at the Oval for Surrey, or give Bairstow a shot at the top of the order instead.Englands stunning slump against South Africa featured Roys fourth single-figure score in his last five innings.By contrast, Bairstow has now scored three fifties in his last four ODI innings yet still is not an England white-ball regular. He has opened in limited overs cricket at county level, making 174 for Yorkshire against Durham this month.Bayliss, summing up Englands dilemma, said: Do you back someone whos been important to us in the last couple of years, or do you go to someone that is in form?Thats a decision we have got to make.Turning to Roy, he admitted: You worry about anyone that is out of runs. But hes been important to us in the last two years, the way he plays at the top of the order, so for us to do well in this tournament, one of the things we will need is Jason playing well.Having said that, the way Jonny is playing -- and he has shown to us this year he can play at the top of the order - were in a good position with someone who is ready and raring to go.Meanwhile Bayliss reckoned there was little to be gained from asking Roy to rein himself in.Jason is probably one of the guys who you say, If the ball is there you hit it, whether thats first or second ball, he said.Sometimes some of those players can get into a bit of a rut and start thinking about too much, rather than just keeping it nice and simple and just see the ball and hit it.England have never won a major global ODI event but Bayliss was cautiously optimistic about their Champions Trophy prospects.Weve got a chance, he said.Im not saying were outright favourites, there are a lot of good teams that can beat anyone on their day.

England trio to pioneer bat sensors in Champions Trophy

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - England trio Jason Roy, Alex Hales and Ben Stokes will be among the players from around the world pioneering new bat sensors during the upcoming Champions Trophy, it was announced Tuesday.Technology giant Intel has developed a sensor, placed on top of the bat handle, that provides previously unseen precise details about a players bat speed and angle of back lift. The aim is to both provide more information to television audiences and, longer term, develop a coaching aid.Former England captain turned cricket broadcaster Nasser Hussain told a news conference at The Oval: How many times have we spoken about people having fast hands or great bat speed? But what does that mean? Weve never quantified it.Hussain, speaking ahead of the Champions Trophy opener between England and Bangladesh at The Oval on Thursday, said he would have benefitted had this technology been available in his career. When I first played for England, I had never really seen myself on television. I remember playing in Jamaica, getting out and walking through the hotel lobby and Geoffrey Boycott shouting at me Hussain, youll never get any runs with that open bat face.Something like this can show you the exact angle of your bat.Hussain said Roy, going through a run drought that has yielded four single figure scores in his last five one-day international innings, might gain from the new system.Take Jason Roy, struggling a little bit at the moment. Say this technology had been in place for two or three years, he could have a net tomorrow, play normally, and then take the data from two years ago and say is everything Im doing with my bat exactly the same as it was? and if you know it was, you know thats not the issue.Hussain added: There will be traditionalists thinking is this relevant?.But if it gives you that one percent to improve the game, someone will be using it.Other innovations at the Champions Trophy include the use of high-technology drones to provide more in-depth pitch analysis and a virtual reality system that allows fans to experience what its like to face the worlds best bowlers.International Cricket Council chief executive David Richardson, speaking alongside Hussain, welcomed the developments by saying: If the technology is available to enhance and amplify the cricket experience, over the years weve shown a real willingness to trial and support it.Our long-term vision is to make cricket the worlds favourite sport and really theres only one way to achieve this -- to keep the fans engaged and interested in the game. The former South Africa wicket-keeper added: Thats all about offering the fans premium content and embracing technology.

Riyad Mahrez wants to leave Leicester

Posted:

LONDON (AFP) - Riyad Mahrez, one of the inspirations behind Leicester Citys fairytale Premier League title triumph, has told the club he wants to leave, he said in a statement released on Tuesday.Out of the huge admiration and respect I hold for Leicester City Football Club I wanted to be totally honest and transparent with them and have therefore informed the club that I feel now is the time for me to move on, Mahrez said in a statement sent to various media outlets.Mahrez, 26, was one of the stars of Leicesters 2015-16 title win and shone as they reached the Champions League quarter-finals this season, but with the club having finished 12th in the table, he now wants to move on.A source close to Mahrez told AFP the Algeria winger would only leave Leicester for a big club and had not yet received any offers.Mahrez, voted the Professional Footballers Association (PFA) Player of the Year last season, said the timing of his departure had been agreed with chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha last year.I had a good discussion with the chairman last summer and we agreed at that time that I would stay for another year in order to help the club as best as I could following the transition of winning the title and in the Champions League, Mahrez said in his statement. However, I am fiercely ambitious and feel that now is the time to move on to a new experience.Ive always enjoyed a good relationship with the chairman and everyone at the club and I hope I have been able to repay the faith shown to me by my performances and commitment on the pitch during my time here.Leicester signed Mahrez from French second-tier side Le Havre in January 2014 and he played an important role in their 2014-15 Championship promotion campaign. The slippery left-footed winger produced a series of stunning displays last season, scoring 17 goals and forming a devastating attacking tandem with Jamie Vardy as Leicester pulled off a sensational 5,000-1 title win.His form dipped this season as Leicesters form slumped, which led to the sacking of manager Claudio Ranieri, but he did find the net four times in the Champions League.Ive had the four best seasons of my career at Leicester and have loved every moment, Mahrez added.I feel immense pride to have been a part of what we have achieved during my time at the club, culminating in becoming Premier League champions. The relationship I share with the club and our amazing fans is something I will treasure forever and I truly hope they will understand and respect my decision. To date, NGolo Kante is the only member of Leicesters title-winning team to have left the King Power Stadium, the France midfielder having moved to Chelsea last year.

Earth is a jewel, says astronaut after six months away

Posted:

PARIS (AFP) - Observing Earth from 400 kilometres (250 miles) away has made astronaut Thomas Pesquet aware of the planets fragility as never before, he told AFP from the International Space Station days before heading home. While on terra firma politicians argued over a pact to preserve Earths climate for future generations of humans, the Frenchman had six months to contemplate the planet from an unfamiliar vantage point. There are things that one understands intellectually, but which one doesnt really get, the 39-year-old said via video link, gently floating around in the zero gravity of space. When it comes to global warming, we talk of two degrees (Celsius) or four degrees -- these are numbers which sometimes exceed human understanding. But to see the planet as a whole... to see it for yourself... this allows you to truly appreciate the fragility.Throughout the interview Pesquet drifted in a room full of machines, gadgets and wires -- the French and European Space Agency flags stuck to a wall behind him.Until you see it from far away, one doesnt really appreciate how thin the atmosphere is, to what extent we are capable of destroying the planet -- to what extent we need to protect it, he insisted.Pesquet, Russian cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy and American Peggy Whitson arrived on the ISS on November 20 for a six-month mission.Since then, Donald Trump has replaced Barack Obama in the White House with promises of pulling America out of a hard-fought global pact to limit global warming.A jewelThe goal, outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement, must be achieved partly by curbing greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels -- an industry with a strong voice in US politics. These gases accumulate in the same atmosphere Pesquet observed from afar, and act almost like a blanket to trap the Suns heat on the surface.Pesquet and Novitskiy are scheduled to return to Earth on Friday. He will be a bit sad to leave, the Frenchman said, deftly twirling a microphone between his fingers with the aid of weightlessness. But at the same time, he will be happy to hug his girlfriend, see family and friends, go to the beach, walk in the mountains, and feel a breeze on his face. The food in space, he said, is not great, and going to the toilet is more camping than five star.I feel ready to go home, Pesquet declared. My suitcase is ready.Pesquet, Frances 10th ISS astronaut, has become a bit of a social media celebrity at home, with more than 550,000 followers on Twitter where he frequently posted photographs of Earth from space. The planet is truly a jewel, he said on Tuesday. We must not take it for granted.

Separate dais for PML-N after PTI leaves Daniyal Aziz high and dry

Posted:

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Leaders of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) addressed a press conference on Tuesday using a rostrum, exclusive to them, after a clash with members of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) yesterday who walked off with their dais leaving Daniyal Aziz high and dry.Naeemul Haq of PTI addressed the press on Monday in the federal capital and as he concluded his brief, workers of PML-N shifted the dais to backseat of his four-wheel drive. Daniyal Aziz, leader of PML-N who was to address next seemed troubled.PTI worker moves the dais to Naeemul Haqs four-wheeler on MondayHowever, to counter the presumably awkward situation, workers of the ruling party arranged a separate rostrum for today’s press conference with PTI bringing a dais as well.Leaders of PTI and PML-N have been delivering quips and ragging one another in press talks for the past years, first over PTI chiefs anti-rigging statements and now over developments surfacing regarding Panama Leaks probe. However, clash over dais yesterday was the first of its kind through the course of their rivalry.

Bangladesh face humiliating defeat at the hands of India in CT warm-up

Posted:

LONDON (Dunya News) - Bangladesh seemed to have lost the plot as their batsmen threw away their wickets in chase of mammoth target of 325 runs against India. The Bangladeshi batsmen had no answer for the extraordinary Indian bowling as the wickets fell one after another in quick succession.Indian pace attack Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Umesh Yadav bowled brilliantly as the first six wickets fell when the score was just 22 runs. Both the bowlers shared six wickets as both got three wickets each.Bangladeshi batsmen who were batting so aggressively against Pakistan proved to be a huge disappointment as three of the batsmen in the early line up failed even to open their accounts. To make things even more worse, hardly any of the batsmen except Mushfiqur Rahim entered the double figures. At one stage, Bangladesh were 47 for 7 as the partnership between Mehedi and Sunzamul Islam of thirty runs proved to the biggest of the match.Bengal tigers were completely whitewashed in all formats of the game by the Indian side as the whole team got out for 84 runs and hence faced a humiliating defeat by 240 runs against the mighty Indian side.Earlier, Bangladeshi skipper Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and asked India to bat first at Kennington Oval.It was Rubel Hussain who provided his side with the early breakthrough as he cleaned up Rohit Sharma on the very first ball of the second over. Both Karthik and Dhawan removed the pressure that was created after the early two wickets and carried on the innings smoothly. An appeal for leg before wicket against Dhawan was turned down by the umpire in the twelfth over.Sunzamul Islam provided the breakthrough as he removed Dhawan who was caught by Mehedi. Dhawan departed after scoring 60 runs as India lost their third wicket.Karthik also reached to his fifty in the twenty sixth over. After playing a superb knock, the dangerous Karthik got retired out after scoring valuable 94 runs in the 35th over. Hardik Pandeya was introduced to the crease in the 36th over.Taskin got some punishment from Pandeya as a boundary of the first ball followed by a huge one for six of the third ball resulted in fetching 12 runs of the forty first over.Pandya was turning out to be a nightmare for the Bangla bowlers specifically in the depth over as he was playing with an aggressive style while frustrating the Bangladeshi side in the process of doing so.The impressive all-rounder scored a crucial knock of 80 runs of 54 balls and helped his side scoring 324 runs in the warm up match prior to the Champions Trophy.
