ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: Far away from Karachi's killing sprees, lawmakers in the National Assembly across party lines on Tuesday called for seeking a political cure to violence in the country's commercial capital.
 
The calls came from both sides of the house, with some opposition members demanding that an all-party parliamentary committee probe the latest upsurge of violence in Karachi and Quetta, while a ruling party member suggested taking along all stakeholders, including a breakaway group rival to MQM known as MQM-Haqiqi and the Jamaat-i-Islami, both of which have no presence in the lower house...

ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: Afghanistan looks dissatisfied, if not disenchanted, with the trilateral process involving the United States and Pakistan that works for promoting peace and reconciliation with Afghan warring groups.

Tariff hike allowed for Wapda companies

ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) allowed on Tuesday about 20 per cent increase in fuel cost, increasing the overall power tariff by Rs1.04 per unit for nine distribution companies of Wapda to be recovered from consumers during the current billing month.
 
The increase will not apply to consumers of Karachi Electric Supply Company and those using less than 50 units per month in the Wapda system...

Pakistan, US resolve row over diplomats

WASHINGTON, Aug 2: The United States and Pakistan seem to have amicably resolved a row that could have led to the imposition of severe travel restrictions on each other's diplomats, diplomatic sources told Dawn. After the US threatened Pakistan with reciprocal action, Islamabad furnished the US Embassy with blanket "no-objection certificates" for their diplomats, the sources said.
 
"I think so too," said a US State Department official when approached by Dawn to confirm if the issue had been resolved...

China offers funds to cope with Attabad lake's effect

A meeting presided over by President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani at the Presidency on Tuesday reviewed the progress made so far in lowering the water level in the lake and in reconstruction and realignment of the portion of Karakoram Highway that was damaged by massive landslides in January last year...

ISLAMABAD, Aug 2: The Supreme Court rejected on Tuesday bail pleas of former religious affairs minister Hamid Saeed Kazmi and his joint secretary Raja Aftab Islam after the federal government opposed these because of their alleged involvement in the Haj scandal. Both are in FIA's custody.

Kharotabad: committee recommends murder case
