Presidency wakes up to Karachi killings
-----------------------------------------------------------------
By Syed Irfan Raza
ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: The government adopted on Wednesday a 'carrot and stick' policy to deal with the law and order situation in Karachi by keeping its doors open for negotiations with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and giving more powers and resources to security forces to take stern action against troublemakers.

The decisions were taken in three back-to-back meetings held in the presidency...

Altaf wants army to quell violence
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Mukhtar Alam
KARACHI: In a speech marked by a discernible reduction of bellicosity, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain said on Wednesday that the Army and the Rangers be deployed in Karachi on a full-time basis to stop it from frequently descending into violence.

Mr Hussain set alarm bells ringing late on Tuesday night when he asked the beleaguered people of Karachi — where more than 300 people were killed last month alone — to stock up on ration for at least a month. He said the people must do that even if they had to sell valuables...

Fata to have political parties, hints PM
----------------------------------------------------------------
By Raja Asghar
ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani indicated in the National Assembly on Wednesday that the government would extend the Political Parties Act to the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) to allow formation of political parties in the troubled region.

But he would not specify the time when this would happen, when responding to a grievance of a government-allied independent lawmaker from the area about two identical presidential regulations enforced in Fata and what is known as Provincially Administered Tribal Areas (Pata) to regulate operations of armed forces there in aid of civil power...

Ogra issues licence for LNG terminal
--------------------------------------------------------------
By Khaleeq Kiani
ISLAMABAD, Aug 3: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) has issued a 'conditional construction licence' to a private foreign firm in "larger national interest" to set up a terminal, jetty and allied facilities at Port Qasim for import of liquefied natural gas (LNG), a move termed by some officials as a serious violation of rules and regulations.

Sources in Ogra told Dawn that the 'conditional licence' had been issued within three weeks of the submission of application without conducting a mandatory public hearing. In the absence of a full-time chairman, they said, Ogra members were under extreme pressure from a federal minister to issue the licence immediately or get ready to go home...
