LAHORE, Aug 27: Personnel of a sensitive agency and the Lahore police have picked up five people for questioning after getting cell phone data of Shahbaz Taseer, who was kidnapped by unidentified people near his company's head office in Gulberg on Friday, Dawn learnt on Saturday.

CJ administers oath to Akhtar Rana

ISLAMABAD, Aug 27: Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry finally administered oath to Mohammad Akhtar Buland Rana as the 17th Auditor General of Pakistan here on Saturday — a development which put to an end a constitutional controversy over questioning the choice by the chief justice, but set out a political disagreement with the opposition PML-N.
 
"The chief justice, in discharge of administrative function, without prejudice to anyone and subject to all just exceptions, will administer the oath," SC Registrar Dr Faqir Hussain said in a statement issued before the administration of oath...

Afghan envoy summoned

ISLAMABAD: As tensions between Islamabad and Kabul spiked after the Chitral cross-border raid by terrorists from Afghanistan, the Afghan chargé d' affaires was summoned to the Foreign Office and told that such attacks would not be tolerated any further.
 
"The activities of the terrorists are a matter of great concern … They cannot be allowed to continue such blatant attacks from across the border," the Afghan diplomat was told in a strongly worded protest...

Setting up of power plants by provinces: CCI seeks proposals from ministry

ISLAMABAD, Aug 27: The Council of Common Interests directed the ministry of water and power on Saturday to submit its proposals within one week on the issue of giving permission to the provinces to set up their own power plants.
 
The CCI, which met for the seventh time since the passage of the 18th Amendment last year, also approved the handing over of Zakat distribution to the provinces. The chief ministers will work out a consensus formula for the disbursement of Zakat funds...

ALGIERS, Aug 27: Eleven people were killed and 32 wounded in a suicide bombing at the Cherchell military academy west of Algiers, the defence ministry said on Saturday according to APS news agency.
