| Posted:

As Hurricane Irene s first showers arrived, the site of the US Open was quiet and nearly empty Saturday, a stark contrast to the customary hustle and bustle two days before the Grand Slam tennis tournament s start.

Normally, thousands of fans attend the celebrity-and-music-filled Arthur Ashe Kids Day, but that event was canceled Friday because worries about the approaching hurricane. And while dozens of players usually would be scattered around the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, a light rain pushed them off the courts before noon.

Sure, it s somewhat scary, you know, because we don t know how hard it s going to hit us. I ve got family. We re in New York City; it s not just a regular city. It s quite something with all the buildings, 16-time major champion Roger Federer said. So it s unusual, but we ll follow the news closely.

Maria Sharapova, the 2006 US Open champion, shrugged her shoulders when asked about the hurricane.

Well, I m a Florida girl, so I m used to this stuff. I think everyone s a bit overreacting about everything, but of course you have to take precaution and all that. But, I mean, where are we going to go? said Sharapova, who moved from Russia to the United States as a kid.

I just hope that our hotel is nice and tough and sturdy, she added with a chuckle. That s all we can do, right? She and Federer spoke at pre-tournament news conferences Saturday; top-ranked Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams were originally scheduled to attend but did not.

The tennis season s last major tournament is scheduled to begin Monday and finish on Sept. 11. Each of the past three years, rain disrupted the end of the tournament, pushing the men s final to Monday and sparking discussion about whether the USTA should put a roof over a court. This year, the bad weather is hitting at the start.

Workers prepared Saturday for the brunt of the storm by taking away anything that was not secured to the ground, US Tennis Association spokesman Chris Widmaier said. That included wood benches, potted plants, banners and television equipment at the six courts from which matches are broadcast.

The entire facility was being shut before 5 p.m. on Saturday, and will be closed to the public on Sunday. After the hurricane moves out of the area, the USTA will assess whatever damage there might be.

Organizers will consider several factors before deciding whether to go ahead with play on Monday, including the condition of the entire facility, whether there is electrical power, and whether players, officials, tournament employees and spectators can make it out there. The city s transit system was shut down Saturday and won t reopen until at least Monday.

Based on the most recent forecasts, we re looking at winds in the 40 to 60 mph range. We know our structures are certainly capable of withstanding that. They re all structurally sound, said Daniel Zausner, managing director of the National Tennis Center. If the forecasts are off, and things are significantly worse than that, then we re going to be in the same position as everyone else in the area.

|
| Irene begins destructive run, kills 8 in NC Posted:

At least Eight people, including an 11-year-old boy and a 55-year-old surfer, have died in storm-related incidents since Hurricane Irene slammed into the US east coast, officials said.

The child died Saturday when a tree fell on an apartment complex in Virginia, while the surfer died Friday when he took to his board in treacherously high surf off the Florida coast, emergency officials told AFP.

Hurricane Irene opened its assault on the Eastern Seaboard on Saturday by lashing the North Carolina coast with wind as strong as 115 mph and pounding shoreline homes with waves. Farther north, authorities readied a massive shutdown of trains and airports, with 2 million people ordered out of the way.

The center of the storm, which was estimated to be some 500 miles wide, passed over North Carolina s Outer Banks for its official landfall just after 7:30 a.m. EDT. The hurricane s vast reach traced the East Coast from Myrtle Beach, S.C., to just below Cape Cod. Tropical storm conditions battered Virginia, Maryland and Delaware, with the worst to come.

On Saturday afternoon, forecasters said Irene s effects could be felt as far north as Canada even after it weakens. A tropical storm warning extended from the U.S. border to Nova Scotia s southern coast.

Irene weakened slightly, with sustained winds down to 85 mph from about 100 a day earlier, making it a Category 1, the least threatening on the scale. The National Hurricane Center reported gusts of 115 mph and waves as high as 7 feet.

At least three deaths were directly caused by the storm. In Nash County, N.C., emergency officials said a man was crushed by a large limb that blew off a tree. In Newport News, Va., a city spokeswoman said an 11-year-old boy was killed when Irene s winds sent a tree crashing through his apartment building. Winds had been gusting well above 60 mph in the area. Also in Virginia, someone was killed when a tree fell onto a car.

Hurricane-force winds arrived near Jacksonville, N.C., at first light, and wind-whipped rain lashed the resort town of Nags Head. Tall waves covered the beach, and the surf pushed as high as the backs of some of the houses and hotels fronting the strand.

"There s nothing you can do now but wait. You can hear the wind and it s scary," said Leon Reasor, who rode out the storm in the Outer Banks town of Buxton. "Things are banging against the house. I hope it doesn t get worse, but I know it will. I just hate hurricanes."

|
| Brains of older adults wiser than young people Posted:

The brains of old people are slower, but wiser which help them achieve a level of performance equal to that of their young counterparts, according to a new study. “The older brain has experience and knows that nothing is gained by jumping the gun. It was already known that aging is not necessarily associated with a significant loss in cognitive function. When it comes to certain tasks, the brains of older adults can achieve very close to the same performance as those of younger ones,” said Dr. Oury Monchi and Dr. Ruben Martins of the University of Montreal.

“We now have neurobiological evidence showing that with age comes wisdom and that as the brain gets older, it learns to better allocate its resources. Overall, our study shows that Aesops fable about the tortoise and the hare was on the money: being able to run fast does not always win the race—you have to know how to best use your abilities. This adage is a defining characteristic of aging.”

For this test, participants were asked to pair words according to different lexical rules, including semantic category (animal, object, etc.), rhyme, or the beginning of the word (attack). “Funny enough, the young brain is more reactive to negative reinforcement than the older one. When the young participants made a mistake and had to plan and execute a new strategy to get the right answer, various parts of their brains were recruited even before the next task began.

However, when the older participants learned that they had made a mistake, these regions were only recruited at the beginning of the next trial, indicating that with age, we decide to make adjustments only when absolutely necessary. It is as though the older brain is more impervious to criticism and more confident than the young brain,” stated

|
| Omega-3s reduces severity of brain damage Posted:

A new study has found that a diet rich in omega-3s reduces the severity of brain damage after a stroke. Universite Laval researchers co-directed by professors Jasna Kriz and Frederic Calon, showed that the extent of brain damage following a stroke was reduced by 25percent in mice that consumed DHA type omega-3s daily.

The team observed that the effects of stroke were less severe in mice that had been fed a diet rich in DHA for three months than in mice fed a control diet.In mice from the DHA group, they saw a reduction in the concentrations of molecules that stimulate tissue inflammation and, conversely, a larger quantity of molecules that prevent the activation of cell death.

“This is the first convincing demonstration of the powerful anti-inflammatory effect of DHA in the brain,” highlighted Frederic Calon of Universite Laval’s Faculty of Pharmacy. This protective effect results from the substitution of molecules in the neuronal membrane: DHA partially replaces arachidonic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid known for its inflammatory properties.

“The consumption of omega-3s creates an anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective environment in the brain that mitigates damage following a stroke,” stated Jasna Kriz, of Universite Laval’s Faculty of Medicine. “It prevents an acute inflammatory response that, if not controlled, is harmful to brain tissue,” Kriz added.

|
