| 7 more fall prey to firing incidents in Karachi Posted: <p> </p><p>At least seven more people fell victim to the recent wave of target killing in the past few hours, raising the death toll to 12.</p><p> </p><p>Some unidentified persons opened fired and injured two persons, Hassan and Wasim, in the Banaras Pull area of Karachi. Bothe the injured were rushed to hospital where one of them died. Taking notice of the issue, Additional IG Akhtar Gorchani suspended police officials who were patrolling the area.</p><p> </p><p>Three more people were shot dead by unidentified persons in orange Town, UP More and Defence Phase 2 areas. Firing incidents were also reported from Bahadurabad, Sarjani Town and Sadar areas where unidentified persons opened indiscriminate firing and injured three people.</p><p> </p><p>Earlier, five people were shot dead in different parts of Karachi. An ANP activist and a police official were among the dead.</p><p> </p><p>Police have also rounded up more than a dozen people from Qasba Colony during a search operation.</p><p> </p><p>Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari has returned to Karachi from London. The president held a meeting with Sindh ChiefMinister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and both the leaders discussed Karachi situation, the chief minister briefed president about recent incidents of violence in the city.</p><p> </p><p>The president also issued instructions to take stern action against miscreants involved in violence and restore law and order situation in Karachi.<br /> </p> |
| West Indies win 2nd T20 against Australia Posted: <p> </p><p>West Indies defeated Australia by 14 runs at Kensington Oval to win the second Twenty20 international and draw the two-game series 1-1.</p><p> </p><p>Chasing a modest 161-run victory target, Australia were well-placed at 75-2 at the halfway stage, but their run-chase slowed with off-break bowler Marlon Samuels taking three crucial wickets to dismiss skipper George Bailey (24), Mike Hussey (14) and Matthew Wade (17).</p><p> </p><p>Opener David Warner top-scored with a 43-ball 58 with five fours and three sixes.</p><p> </p><p>Seamer Fidel Edwards, who had dismissed Shane Watson for nought in the first over, returned to turn the screw by getting rid of Daniel Christian and Brett Lee with successive deliveries in the 19th over to finish with three for 23.</p><p> </p><p>That left Australia seven wickets down and needing 19 off the final over, bowled by Dwayne Bravo.</p><p> </p><p>Kieron Pollard took a fine catch in the deep to dismiss David Hussey (19) off the fourth ball with 17 still needed and the game was up as Australia finished on 146 for nine.</p><p> </p><p>Bravo had also played a key role in the dismissal of dangerman Warner, running out the opener with a direct hit in the 13th over with the score on 98 for three. </p><p> </p><p>Earlier, West Indies squandered a blistering start to be bowled out for just 160.</p><p> </p><p>After winning the toss, West Indies looked good for a huge score when they raced to 65-0 from six overs and 110-2 by the 10th.</p><p> </p><p>Openers Dwayne Smith and Johnson Charles got them off to a flying start.</p><p> </p><p>Charles made 37 off 21 balls with six fours and a six before he was first man out in the seventh over.</p><p> </p><p>Big-hitting Pollard, who had scored a maiden T20 fifty on Tuesday, was caught behind off Lee after making just one in the eighth over with the total on 76.</p><p> </p><p>Smith top-scored thanks to a 34-ball innings of 63, which featured six fours and four huge sixes, but once he was caught in the deep off slow bowler Xavier Doherty, the runs dried up.</p><p> </p><p>Bravo, with 23 off 24 balls, was the only other batsman to reach double figures as West Indies lost their last eight wickets for just 40 runs before they were bowled out with two balls to spare.</p><p> </p><p>Lee was the pick of the Australian bowlers with 3 for 23.<br /> </p> |
| South Africa beat India in only T20 Posted: <p> </p><p>A blazing innings by India s Gautam Gambhir could not prevent a South African win in a rain-hit one-off Twenty20 international at the Wanderers Stadium on Friday.</p><p> </p><p>Gambhir slammed 49 not out off 28 balls as India raced to 71 for no wicket in 7.5 overs in reply to South Africa s 219 for four in 20 overs. But South Africa s big total meant that India were 11 runs short of the Duckworth/Lewis par score when a thunderstorm broke over the ground.</p><p> </p><p>Jacques Kallis and Colin Ingram shared a rapid century partnership as South Africa posted a formidable total.</p><p> </p><p>Kallis made 61 off 42 balls and the left-handed Ingram raced to 78 off 50 deliveries after South Africa were sent in to bat. The pair put on 119 of 80 balls for the second wicket.</p><p> </p><p>Indian captain MS Dhoni used eight bowlers but runs flowed as the batsmen took advantage of a good batting pitch, short boundaries and a fast outfield.</p><p> </p><p>Richard Levi gave the hosts a fast start, hitting four boundaries before being caught at slip for 19 off seven balls.</p><p> </p><p>The Kallis-Ingram stand enabled the later batsmen to go for their shots, with new cap Farhaan Behardien hitting an unbeaten 20 off 11 balls and Justin Ontong 22 off seven before Albie Morkel, coming in with only three balls remaining, hit Suresh Raina for two sixes and a four.</p><p> </p><p>The run feast continued when India started their innings, with Gambhir hitting seven fours and a six. But opening partner Robin Uthappa could only manage 18 off 19 balls, while South African opening bowler Lonwabo Tsotsobe conceded only 15 runs off three overs.</p><p> </p><p>The hastily-arranged match was billed as an annual fixture for the Friendship Cup and a tribute to South African all-rounder Kallis, with profits going to the Jacques Kallis Foundation which provides scholarships for talented cricketers from under-privileged areas to attend good schools.<br /> </p> |
| Osamas network in Pakistan was not big: US Posted: <p> </p><p>Giving a briefing to the media, deputy spokesperson of the State Department Mark Toner said that soon after the Abbottabad raid, the US asked the Pakistan government about the network of Osama bin Laden. He said “we have not received any information that indicates that there was such a network of support there.”</p><p> </p><p>He said that US has no knowledge that for how long Osama’s widows have been living in Pakistan.</p><p> </p><p>Replying to a question about halting drone attacks, Mark Toner said “We continue to await the results of the parliamentary review. That’s still ongoing. But I think that in terms of our relations, we continue to have engagement at all levels within the Pakistani Government. And we certainly respect the review process that’s underway and we look forward to the results, and then we’ll be willing to discuss some of the issues raised by that.”<br /> </p> |
| Altaf for informing masses about drone attacks Posted: <p> </p><p>The chief of Mutahidda Qaumi Movement, Altaf Hussain has said that instead of wasting money on frequently calling parliamentary session, the rulers should bring facts before nation about drone attacks and NATO supply.</p><p> </p><p>He said that two drone attackes were carried out on March 30 but no statement was issued from Foreign Ministry or any government official. He blamed that all political and religious parties are also silent on the incident.</p><p> </p><p>Altaf Hussain said that this joke with the nation should be stopped now and the people of Pakistan should be informed about these facts.<br /> </p> |
| Somali pirates agree to release Pak captives Posted: <p> </p><p>The chairman CPLC, Ahmad Chinai held successful negotiation with Somali pirates who had hijacked MV Albado cargo ship in Indian Ocean.</p><p> </p><p>At his arrival in Karachi after the negotiations, Ahmad Chinai said that 2.8 million dollars will be paid to the Somali pirates for the release of captives. He informed that April 20 has been fixed as the deadline for the payment.<br /> </p> |
| Presidential ordinance on collection of tax delayed Posted: <p> </p><p>The revamped Capital Gains Tax (CGT) regime is likely to be applicable beyond April 1, 2012 following promulgation of the Presidential Ordinance. However, the exact date of the issuance of the Ordinance cannot be specified till finalization of the revised law for the stock exchanges.</p><p> </p><p>The revised CGT regime on the stock exchanges will be applicable in due course of time as both the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the SECP are actively engaged in the finalization of the new CGT rules including proposed Ordinance. It is already March 28 and the revised CGT regime may be announced during April. However, it is premature to give exact date of the applicability of the revised CGT regime on stock exchanges, SECP Chairman added.</p><p> </p><p>The Ordinance cannot be promulgated when the Parliament is in session. The draft of the Eighth Schedule of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 on the CGT has proposed filing of wealth statement for the Tax Year 2012 by investors of stock exchanges. The proposed section 2 of the draft Eighth Schedule of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 deals with the source of investment.</p><p> </p><p>Under the draft of the Eighth Schedule, the proposed Schedule has also explained the responsibility and obligation of National Clearing Company of Pakistan Limited (NCCPL). A proposed section 100B (special provision relating to capital gain tax) has also been drafted which is related to the capital gains on disposal of listed securities and tax thereon, subject to section 37A, shall be computed, determined, collected and deposited in accordance with the Rules laid down in the Eighth Schedule.</p><p> </p><p>This draft of the Eighth Schedule of the Income Tax Ordinance 2001 is being finalized among tax managers, Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan and Ministry of Finance.<br /> </p> |
| Jamshoro: 5 killed, 15 injured in road accident Posted: <p> </p><p>According to details, the ill-fated bus, which was traveling from Karachi to Larkana, collided with a truck coming from opposite direction near Jamshoro, killing three passengers on the spot and injuring 15 others.</p><p> </p><p>The dead and injured persons were shifted to Liaquat Medical College Hospital where two of the injured succumbed to their wounds.</p><p> </p><p>According to police, the accident was caused due to negligence of the truck driver.<br /> </p> |
| US court sentences Dr Fai to two years in jail Posted: <p> </p><p>Kashmiri leader Ghulam Nabi Fai was on Friday sentenced to two years in jail by a US court on charges of illegally working for Pakistan ISI to influence American policy on Kashmir.</p><p> </p><p>Dr Fai was working in the United Nations and US for goal of self-determination for Kashmiris for the past two decades.</p><p> </p><p>Fai was sentenced to 24 months of imprisonment followed by three years of supervised release by a court in Alexandria, Virginia, a suburb of Washington DC.<br /> </p> |

| Disease transmitting snail found in Florida Posted: <p> </p><p>The Giant African land snail presents a health threat as they can transmit a rare form of meningitis to which there is no cure.<br />Search for the disease transmitting snails is on in Florida and authorities have destroyed more that 30.00 snails.<br /> </p><p> </p><p>Some of the snails, found in the state of Florida, are thought to have been imported for sacrificial rituals.<br /> </p> |
| CNG stations to remain open in Sindh today Posted: <p> </p><p>According to chairman All Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association, Abdus Sami Khan, the CNG stations in Karachi and other big cities in Sindh remained closed for two to three days due to recent acts of violence and the association has demanded of the Sui Southern Gas Company not to shut CNG stations for 24 hours on Saturday.</p><p> </p><p>The Sui Southern Gas Company has accepted the association’s demand and the CNG stations will remain open today.</p> |
| No new tax in next budget: Gilani Posted: <p> </p><p>Speaking in the PTV programme Prime Minister Online ‚ he said efforts will be made to create more jobs.</p><p> </p><p>To a question about the energy crisis‚ the prime minister said the incumbent government had inherited the shortfall but his government was taking steps to improve the situation.</p><p> </p><p>He said the electricity crisis erupted due to the wrong policies of the previous governments. Particularly‚ Musharraf regime did nothing for the energy sector.</p><p> </p><p>About the protests over power outages in Punjab‚ Prime Minister Gilani ruled out any discriminatory treatment being meted out to any part of the country. He regretted that the federal government is being blamed though all provinces are fully empowered to generate power on their own.</p><p> </p><p>About the gas shortage‚ he said natural gas will be imported from Qatar to meet the demand. The prime minister said the government has started long and short range plans in the energy sector.
