Raja chairs first cabinet meeting: Govt acts at last to ease power ordeal

ISLAMABAD, June 26: Raja Pervez Ashraf chaired the first cabinet meeting on Tuesday since taking over as prime minister, setting for himself and his team a difficult task of streamlining the power sector and to enforce at-source deduction of electricity dues from all those federal and provincial government departments which default on payments.

The energy crisis topped the agenda, with the new prime minister declaring he would not leave 'any stone unturned' to rectify the situation and assuring the cabinet of bringing loadshedding to a manageable level within three months. However, learning from experience as power minister under former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, this time he didn't announce any timeframe for ending loadshedding...

Decision to do away with five-day week

ISLAMABAD, June 26: The government has in principle decided to abolish two weekly offs and make Saturday a normal working day again to "boost national productivity".

Talks with India Postponed

NEW DELHI, June 26: The Indo-Pak foreign ministers' meeting, which was scheduled in July, has been postponed since the dates were clashing with the presidential poll here.

There is confusion in Islamabad about the name of the prisoner — Surjeet or Sarabjeet. Over the years all reports about the case have named him as Sarabjeet, but Law Minister Farooq H. Naek insisted on Tuesday that the prisoner being released was Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh...

ANF intent on arresting ephedrine case accused

RAWALPINDI, June 26: Ali Musa Gilani, the son of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, will be arrested for his alleged involvement in the ephedrine quota case, a spokesman for the Anti-Narcotics Force told reporters at a ceremony on Tuesday. "Efforts are being made by the ANF to arrest the accused in the ephedrine case because we are proceeding according to the law," said Lt Col Mohammad Ishtiaq Ahmad. "Operational set-up of the ANF and police stations are spread all over the country."

Uganda detains five Pakistanis

KAMPALA, June 26: Uganda has arrested five Pakistanis suspected of militant links, police said on Tuesday, two weeks before the second anniversary of a bombing attack in Kampala for which Somali group Al Shabaab claimed responsibility. Officials say the country is vulnerable to further attacks from Al Shabaab that has vowed to keep striking until a Ugandan army contingent, leading an African Union-mandated force protecting Somalia's government, withdraws.

The area where the five men were arrested was formerly a base for now-dormant Islamist group Allied Democratic Forces (ADF-NALU), which officials say has links to Al Shabaab...

US senators to press for Afridi's release

WASHINGTON, June 26: Two US lawmakers will meet Ambassador Sherry Rehman on Wednesday to press for the release of Dr Shakil Afridi while a top American general travels to Islamabad to urge Pakistani leaders to stop cross-border incursions.

Embassy officials confirmed to Dawn that Republican Leader in the US Senate Mitch McConnell and Senator Rand Paul are meeting Ambassador Rehman on Wednesday to seek Dr Afridi's release. The physician from the Khyber Agency was sentenced to 33 years imprisonment after he helped the CIA track down Osama bin Laden...

'Mumbai plotter was planning new mission'

MUMBAI, June 26: An alleged plotter in the 2008 Mumbai attacks now in Indian police custody had been living in Saudi Arabia for two years and was "talent-spotting" for another "massive attack", an Indian police official said on Tuesday.

Sayeed Zabiuddin Ansari, also known as Abu Hamza and Abu Jindal, was arrested at Delhi airport on June 21 on his arrival from Saudi Arabia. Police revealed his arrest only on Monday, after interrogating him for five days about the three-day rampage in Mumbai that killed 166 people...

Reference to Pakistan in UN report rejected

UNITED NATIONS, June 26: Pakistan rejected on Monday some 'unwarranted references' to Pakistan made in a UN report that termed its law-enforcement operation against terrorists in a tribal agency as 'armed conflict', and called for correcting the reference.

"We are disappointed that the authors of this report (on the protection of civilians in armed conflict) have clearly violated the mandate by mentioning Pakistan in the report," Pakistan's Deputy Ambassador Raza Bashir Tarar said during an open UN Security Council debate on the report...

Afghan officials allege shelling from Pakistan

KUNAR (Afghanistan), June 26: A barrage of cross-border artillery and rocket attacks from Pakistan forced thousands of Afghan villagers to flee their homes, witnesses and officials in Afghanistan alleged on Tuesday. The shelling was reported in eastern Kunar province after Pakistan accused Afghanistan of giving safe haven to militants who infiltrated the border to kill 13 Pakistani soldiers.

"More than 500 families have been displaced in two districts of Dangam and Nari due to continued Pakistani rocket shelling in the past two weeks," said Wasefullah Wasef, a spokesman for the provincial government in Kunar...

Five die in drone strike

MIRAMSHAH, June 26: Five Taliban were killed and two others were injured when missiles fired by a US drone hit a residential compound used by militants in the border area in Shawal tehsil of North Waziristan on Tuesday night.

Local people said the drone fired two missiles at around 8.45pm, destroying the house and a car parked in the house...

Taliban threaten media offices

KARACHI, June 26: The outlawed Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan group has claimed responsibility for the Monday night attack on the offices of the Aaj News TV channel. Two people were injured in the attack.

In a phone call made to the TV channel on Tuesday, a TTP spokesperson said the attack had been carried out because Aaj TV did not give full coverage to the Jihadi movement events and there would be more attacks if proper coverage was not given in the future...
