Warner braces for Pakistan spin challenge Posted: Dashing Australian opener David Warner on Thursday said he and fellow batsmen were ready for Pakistans spin challenge in their limited over series starting next week. The 25-year-old left-hander, who has made an impact with his aggressive strokeplay at international level, is bracing for Pakistans successful spin trio led by Saeed Ajmal and backed up by Shahid Afridi and Mohammad Hafeez.Australia first face Afghanistan in a tune-up one-day in Sharjah on Saturday before taking on Pakistan in three one-day and as many Twenty20 internationals on dry and spin-friendly pitches in the United Arab Emirates. But Warner said Australians have prepared well.We had a great camp in Darwin, Warner told reporters. Some wickets there were turning. I think the boys definitely challenged themselves in that area and they got through pretty well.In January this year Pakistan routed the then worlds best Test team England 3-0 here, with Ajmal and left-arm spinner Abdul Rehman sharing 43 wickets between them but England hit back by taking the one-day series 4-1 and T20s 2-1.Warner said facing Ajmal and Afridi will be a big challenge.I havent faced them before in turning conditions. I have faced both in a Twenty20 game in England where the ball wasnt turning much. I have faced Afridi in Australia but not in turning conditions as yet so I am really looking forward to it.We knew that in this series we are going to face a lot of spin bowling. We are looking forward for the challenge and now we see that as a bonus, said Warner of the series in which the first one-day will be in Sharjah on August 28.The second match is scheduled for Abu Dhabi (August 31) and the third in Sharjah (September 3).That will be followed by three Twenty20 matches in Dubai on September 5, 7 and 10.Warner hoped the series will provide good preparation for the World Twenty20 to be held in Sri Lanka in September-October.It is disappointing we cannot play in Pakistan but we are two teams who like facing each other. I am looking forward for the challenge which can be great, said Warner, who promised no let-ups against minnows Afghanistan. We are playing for Australia which always takes teams seriously. Anytime we walk out there with the Australian cap on it is a thrill. We will treat it as another game for Australia.Warner warned Afghanistan can be a surprise package. We know what Afghanistan is capable of over here. Everyone says that some of us struggle against spin bowling and we know that they might have some good spin bowlers as well.We havent got to see much of their footage. We are expecting a team that is jumping out of the skin to play against Australia. They are a type of a team that can bring anything into the table and we are looking forward to that challenge. |
Afghanistan set to face Australia in ODI in Dubai Posted: Afghanistan takes another big step toward cricketing respect on Saturday when it plays Australia in a one-day international, only the second time the team of mostly war refugees has faced a test-playing nation. The violence-wracked country qualified this year for its second consecutive Twenty20 World Cup, but isnt expected to beat Australia. Even so, coach Kabir Khan said playing well will give the team confidence ahead of the T20 tournament in Sri Lanka in September and show that it has moved beyond simply being a feel-good story for the sport. He also hopes it will inspire a younger generation to take up the sport.Afghanistan played its first ODI against a test nation earlier this year when it faced Pakistan, losing by seven wickets. The Australia match is a day where Afghan cricket can go a step higher than where we are, Khan told The Associated Press. Some of the players have seen Australia on TV and they are stars. Now they will get a chance to play against them.Made up of players who learned the game in Pakistan refugee camps, Afghanistan has gone from the World Cricket League Division 5 in 2008 to playing its first ODI this year against a test playing team, Pakistan. The teams success has helped cricket replace football as the national sport, and even the Taliban have approved cricket where frequent breaks mean the sport doesnt interfere with prayer times in the Muslim nation.Cricket clubs have sprung up across the country and the government is building new grounds in order to keep up with the growing demand from 70,000 club cricketers. A new crop of players are also showing potential, with the under-19 team set to play Sri Lanka for ninth place at the under-19 World Cup on Friday. Two years ago, the team finished 16th.Any countrys future depends on its youngsters and the quality of its youngsters, Khan said, adding that several players from that team including skipper Javed Ahmadi have been included in its World Cup team. The way this team has performed for last seven or eight years, we need a very good strong backup otherwise we will lose that place. A lot of teams at this stage have lost their place ... We have loads of examples of that in world cricket like Kenya going down, Bermuda going down.Acting Australia coach Steve Rixon said his team was glad to do its part to bolster the prospects of Afghanistan cricket. But he said Australia was there to win and show why it once was the No. 1-ranked ODI team in the world. It currently sits fourth.Afghanistan has come in as a minor contender but they are there and they are competing at the top level, Rixon said.We have to come in with every ounce of respect for the opposition, he said. I like the idea that little minor nations are getting a chance to come in and play against the bigger boys. I think that is great for cricket.Vice captain David Warner said it would be a mistake to take a team like Afghanistan lightly. They are the type of people that could bring anything to the table and we are looking forward to that challenge, Warner said.Warner said the biggest hurdle is coping with spin bowling. Afghanistan has several quality spin bowlers including all-rounder Mohammad Nabi and Samiullah Shenwari. Its top fast bowler Hamid Hassan is out injured but expected to be back for the World Cup. |
Football: Barcelona beat Madrid 3-2 in first leg Posted: Pedro Rodriguez, Lionel Messi and Xavi Hernandez scored second-half goals to give Barcelona a 3-2 first-leg home victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup on Thursday. The traditional curtain raiser to the new Spanish season was threatening to become a lacklustre affair until Ronaldo put Madrid ahead on 55 minutes.Barca replied three times before Angel Di Maria capitalised on a Victor Valdes mistake to give Madrid some hope ahead of next weeks second-leg in the Santiago Bernabeu. |
Usain Bolt clocks 19.58 in 200 metres at Lausanne Posted: Usain Bolt was fast and impressive at the Athletissima Diamond League meeting on Thursday. Yohan Blake was fast and maybe even more impressive.Bolt, the Olympic champion and world record holder over 100 and 200 metres, timed 19.58 seconds in the fastest 200 ever run at the speedy Lausanne track.Yet he was almost overshadowed by Blake, his Jamaican friend and rival who 20 minutes earlier closed the gap between them in the all-time 100 rankings.Blake, a two-time Olympic silver medalist behind Bolt, clocked 9.69 to become the joint second-fastest man in history.9.69 is a wonderful result, said Bolt, who ran that time when setting a then-world record at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. I knew he is going to push real hard tonight.Blake, fighting off a post-London Games cold, overcame a slight headwind to shave .06 off his previous best. He ran 9.75 to beat Bolt in the Jamaican Olympic trials in June and the same time again when his training partner finished in 9.63 to defend his Olympic title earlier this month.I knew I was fast and my coach told me I could run faster, said Blake, who shares coach Glen Mills with Bolt. Today I could finally prove it.Blake made a fast start and an impressive driving finish to equal the 9.69 run by Tyson Gay of the United States in 2009. Gay trailed in Blakes wake Thursday, placing second in 9.83.I have been working for that. Now it all comes together, Blake said. My performance proves it.Still, Bolts world record of 9.58 to win gold at the 2009 world championships is at a different level, and his fooling on the start line Thursday suggests he is at ease with Blakes challenge. After playing air guitar for the television cameras, Blake used the 1.4 metres per second of wind assistance to set an Athletissima record, 0.26 behind his gold medal-winning time in London. This season has not always been great but Im thrilled with the way it is finishing, Bolt said. However, the season is unlikely to climax with another Bolt vs. Blake match. They are set to avoid each other in the final two Diamond League meets, at Zurich next Thursday and Brussels a week later. |

1.5 million child labourers in Colombia: study Posted: Nearly 1.5 million children aged between five and 17 were working in Colombia during the third quarter of 2011, driving the child labor rate up to 13 percent, an official report said Thursday. This is embarrassing news for the country, because the goal of a developed society is that its children do not work, said Jorge Bustamante, director of the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).Close to 23 percent of working children do not go to school, added Bustamante, who conducted the investigation together with the Institute for Family Well-being and the Labor Ministry.According to official data, Colombia has 44.9 million inhabitants, 11.2 million of which are children aged five to 17 -- little more than a quarter of the population.Among the children who were working at the time of the study, 31.7 percent reported voluntarily working to earn their own money, while 27.6 percent admitted to being forced to contribute to their familys livelihood.Over half of working children said they received no pay, 28.3 percent said they were salaried employees and 20 percent worked independently.A third of the children work in hotels and restaurants, another third in agriculture or fishing and 16.1 percent in factories, according to the report, which did not include exploitation of minors by armed groups and in the sex trade. |
Oil prices fall near $96, reversing morning gains Posted: Benchmark crude fell 99 cents to finish at $96.27 per barrel in New York. The decline erased nearly all the gains from the day before, when minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserves July 31-Aug. 1 meeting suggested the Fed was preparing new steps to boost the economy. But on Thursday, oil traders were less sure that the central bank would act. And there was more uncertainty out of Europe.James Bullard, president of the Feds St. Louis bank, told CNBC Thursday that the minutes from the Feds meeting were stale because the economy had picked up since then. The oil market had hoped for another round of bond-buying, called quantitative easing, or QE.If youre going to downgrade the expectations of QE, that will definitely put some downward pressure on the market for oil, said Phil Flynn of Price Futures Group. The leaders of Germany and France also suggested Thursday that they would be hesitant to extend deadlines for Greece to make reforms tied to its bailout.Oil prices headed lower around midday, shortly after the European leaders made their comments.Overall, oil prices have climbed nearly $10 per barrel since Aug. 1, partly on hopes that the U.S., Europe and China would do more to increase growth in their respective economies. Growth increases demand for oil and other energy products. At the pump, the national average for gasoline rose less than a penny overnight to $3.718 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. Thats about a quarter more than a month ago and about 15 cents higher than a year ago.Natural gas prices also fell after the government said more natural gas went into storage last week than analysts had expected. The nations gas reserves remain well above average because of strong production and relatively soft demand. |
Euro pushes higher on fed stimulus hopes Posted: The euro pushed higher against the dollar Thursday as expectations of Federal Reserve stimulus actions continued to guide sentiment on the forex market. The euro rose to $1.2562 from $1.2522 late Wednesday, scoring its third straight gain on the greenback.David Starkey of Western Union said the strong hints at a new stimulus found in the minutes of the latest Fed policy meeting released Wednesday remained the dominant theme in trade for a second day.The report highlighted that many of the committee members feel that without substantial and sustainable improvement, additional stimulative initiatives will be needed fairly soon, said Starkey. This has been taken to mean that the Fed may be growing impatient with the pace of the recovery and looking to offer a helping hand. The aim of more stimulus would be to drive down long-term US interest rates, making the dollar a less attractive investment compared to other currencies. The dollar also fell against the Japanese currency, trading to 78.47 yen from 78.53 yen. The euro was higher, at 98.59 yen per euro compared to 98.34The British pound slipped on the dollar after a three-day rise, buying $1.5858 compared to $1.5878 a day earlier. The dollar fell on the Swiss franc, to 0.9559 francs from 0.9585 francs. |
