Rs4bn for rebuilding houses in Awaran

QUETTA: The Planning Commission of Pakistan has approved an allocation of Rs4 billion for the reconstruction of 16,000 houses in the earthquake-hit areas of Balochistan’s Awaran district.

Rights battle should not undermine security: CJ

ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani said on Friday that the country faced a multitude of challenges, including terrorism, sectarian violence, ethnic cleansing of minorities and weakened rights for women and children, but stressed that while confronting the challenges “we should not justify undermining the national security”.

“It is our duty, as a pillar of this state, to hold fast in believing the seminal values of the rule of law, human dignity, tolerance and compassion,” the chief justice said while addressing a full court reference held at the Supreme Court in honour of Justice Khilji Arif Hussain on his reaching superannuation.

Rupee makes fresh gains against dollar

KARACHI: The dollar’s slide against the rupee continued on Friday as the US currency traded as low as Rs96.10 in the inter-bank and Rs98.20 in the open market.

Currency dealers in the inter-bank market said banks were suffering losses because of the unpredictable exchange rate and saw no end to dollar depreciation.

Opposition formulates plan to block PPO in Senate

ISLAMABAD: Opposition parties finalised on Friday their plan to block the Pakistan Protection Ordinance (PPO) in the Senate which would take up the controversial law during its session commencing on Monday, sources said.

In a worrying development for the ruling party, not only the four main opposition parties — the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) – will try to block the legislation in the upper house but will be supported by the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) which has so far been with the PML-N.

$7 million from Malala Fund for education project in remote areas

ISLAMABAD: A number of people in the country may hold an uncharitable opinion about Malala Yousuzai’s worldwide efforts to promote girls’ education but the government has decided to make use of money from a fund set up by her for an education project.

The sceptics are not only laymen who doubt whether the young education activist was actually shot at by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) but also people holding powerful positions in the government who have downplayed her internationally recognised efforts.

Taliban infighting leaves over a dozen militants dead

According to sources, the fighting has now spread to more areas of North and South Waziristan.

RDX used in fruit market bombing: officials

At least 24 people were killed and 122 others injured when a bomb tore through Subzi Mandi in the federal capital on Wednesday.
