Algeria at UN: Limit free speech, protect Islam

Posted:

Algeria demanded new efforts Saturday to limit freedom of expression to prevent denigrating attacks on Islam, appealing to the United Nations to take a lead as nations engaged in new debate on the tensions between free speech and religious tolerance. In an address to the General Assembly, Algerias foreign minister Mourad Medelci called for global action under the auspices of the United Nations to respond to violent demonstrations provoked by a US-produced video. While Medelci didnt offer precise details of how he believed the U.N. could intervene, his call follows similar demands at the General Assembly from scores of leaders in the Muslim world who want new laws to ban insults against Islam. On the sidelines of the annual forum, Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, told The Associated Press Saturday in an interview that the deaths of two dozen people in violent protests against the anti-Islam film underscored the need for new legislation.Malaysias foreign minister Anifah Aman told the General Assembly that the creators of the anti-Islam film and those behind the publication of lewd caricatures by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo had shown blatant malicious intent toward Muslims. When we discriminate against gender, it is called sexism. When African Americans are criticized and vilified, it is called racism. When the same is done to the Jews, people call it Anti-Semitism. But why is it when Muslims are stigmatized and defamed, it is defended as freedom of expression? Aman told the General Assembly.Aman he believed it was time to dwell deeper into the heart of the problem and the real debate the relationship between freedom of expression and social responsibilities, duties and obligations.Pakistans President Asif Ali Zardari had called in his speech Tuesday to the General Assembly for action led by the U.N. to address a widening rift between the Muslim world and the West.Italy and Jordan said Thursday at a meeting on the sidelines of the forum that they were already working on an initiative to promote religious tolerance, which had begun before the anti-Islam video went public. The drive to push better understanding will involve a conference of experts and academics in the coming months.Egypts President Mohammed Morsi also called for limits on free speech, to help protect the world from instability and hatred.Morsi said Wednesday his country would respect freedom of expression, but only when it is not used to incite hatred against anyone, one that is not directed towards one specific religion or culture.Yemens President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi told the General Assembly on Wednesday there should be limits for the freedom of expression, especially if such freedom blasphemes the beliefs of nations and defames their figures.Zardari warned that the international community must not become silent observers. In a speech Tuesday he called for the criminalization of acts that destroy the peace of the world and endanger world security by misusing freedom of expression.Indonesias President Susilo Bambang Yudnoyne head of the worlds most populous Muslim-majority nation told the General Assembly on Tuesday that previous initiatives at the U.N. had failed to halt intolerance. The defamation of religion persists, we have seen yet another one of its ugly faces in the film Innocence of Muslims, he said.In his speech Tuesday to the General Assembly, President Barack Obama described the anti-Islam film as crude and disgusting, but mounted a defense of freedom of expression. He warned that in a diverse society, efforts to restrict speech can become a tool to silence critics, or oppress minorities. The strongest weapon against hateful speech is not repression, it is more speech the voices of tolerance that rally against bigotry and blasphemy, and lift up the values of understanding and mutual respect, Obama said.Speaking Saturday, Liechtensteins Foreign Minister Aurelia Frick said that the hateful slander of people on the basis of their culture or religion is unacceptable, but did not join calls for new laws. She urged nations instead to promote values of tolerance, understanding and mutual respect.

Libyans surrender hundreds of weapons to army

Posted:

Libyans turned over hundreds of weapons at collection points in the capital and the eastern city of Benghazi on Saturday following rallies which called for disarmament and the disbanding of militias.A steady stream of men surrendered their weapons to national army troops stationed in Tripolis Martyrs Square and in Benghazis Freedom Square, AFP journalists reported. This is the first drive and it wont be the last, army spokesman Ali al-Sheikhi told AFP in reference to the campaign launched by the army in partnership with civil society organisations.Colonel Hussein Abdullah Khalifa, overseeing the collection of weapons in Tripoli, said the initiative was galvanised by anti-militia rallies pressing for a united army which were held in Libyas two largest cities this month. We are astonished by the positive turn out, he said.Tripoli campaign organiser Ziad Hadia told AFP that hundreds of people turned in light, medium and heavy weapons as well as vast amounts of ammunition ranging from bullets to tank shells. Most people handed in assault rifles, he said.We also received six heat-seeking missiles, added Hadia, while one person had come forward with a tank which is to be delivered to the army later at an undisclosed location. In Benghazi, the army tallied some 730 light weapons, 200 hand grenades, 100 anti-personnel and anti-tank mines, along with 20,000 assorted ammunition, an AFP journalist said. Those numbers represent just a fraction of the arms that spilled out of the arsenals of toppled dictator Moamer Kadhafi but it was seen as a step forward in a country where many cling to their weapons citing insecurity. To achieve security we must take the first step ourselves, said Mustafa Abu Hmeid, a 23-year-old mechanic clutching a rifle, a treasured spoil of the 2011 conflict which ended in Kadhafis ouster and death.Housewife Mariam Abu Swera expressed relief: As long as there are arms on the streets, I cant move freely or go about my normal life, so we really welcome this step. The day-long collection drive was spearheaded by the national army and private television station Al-Hurra, which drummed up support through its live broadcasts from Tripoli and Benghazi. Its success pushed organisers to extend the deadline to 10 pm (2000 GMT).Organisers in both cities will raffle off prizes, including two cars, at the end of the collection. They said the process would be repeated to include other cities.A September 11 attack on the US consulate in Benghazi that killed four Americans, including the US ambassador, was followed by mass anti-militia protests in the city, increasing pressure on Libyan authorities to tackle insecurity. On Friday, hundreds of people rallied in Tripoli in support of a national army and against armed groups.

Iran condemns US for taking group off terror list

Posted:

Iran condemned on Saturday the Obama administration for taking an Iranian militant group formerly allied with Saddam Hussein off the US terrorism list, saying it shows Washingtons double standards. The Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), which began as a guerrilla movement fighting Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, helped overthrow the monarch in 1979 then quickly fell out with the Islamic Republics first leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. It fought in the 1980s alongside Saddams forces in the eight-year Iran-Iraq war but disarmed after the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.The State Department delisted the group on Friday, meaning that any assets the MEK has in the United States are unblocked and Americans can do business with the organization. On Saturday, at their Paris headquarters, MEK members gathered to celebrate, tossing flower petals and displaying photos of members killed in the past 15 years. We call on the international community to respect the will of the Iranian people for a regime change in Iran, Maryam Rajavi, the Paris-based head of the exiled opposition group, said Saturday.Irans foreign ministry said in a statement that the delisting of MEK was a violation of Americas legal and international obligations that could threaten U.S. interests. The decision will bring U.S. responsibility for past, present and future terrorist operations by this group, the statement also said.Iranian State TV criticized the decision, saying that the U.S. considered the MEK good terrorists and claims Washington is using the group to work against Tehran. State radio said the move highlights President Barack Obamas anti-Iranian sentiments.

Tornado hits fair in Spain, flood deaths reach 10

Posted:

A tornado swept through a fairground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.Fridays tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Fridays flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.Last summer, Lorca was hit by Spains deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga. The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region. The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia, and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible. The heavy rains which started Friday morning were expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

US in command with 8-4 lead in Ryder Cup

Posted:

Sparked by Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelsons record-tying performance, the United States won all but one match to take a commanding 8-4 lead over Europe on Saturday. The largest comeback in Ryder Cup history was at Brookline in 1999, when the U.S. erased a 10-6 deficit on the final day.I keep telling the guys were not even halfway over with this tournament so far, captain Davis Love III said. Theres a lot of points left, lets keep doing what were doing. Theyre buying into it, theyre playing great. This is the largest lead the Americans have had after three sessions since the Ryder Cup expanded to include players from continental Europe in 1979. They need 14½ points to win the Ryder Cup.Europe avoided a morning sweep thanks to who else? Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, who beat Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 1 up. Poulter has Europes best winning percentage in Ryder Cup play with a 10-3-0 record, and there was no way he was going to let the Americans take a point from his match. It was absolutely key, Poulter said. Jose put us out No. 1 for a reason, and thats to get the point and put the point up on the board.Just as they did on Friday, the Americans got their spark from Bradley. Hes got more energy and enthusiasm than a 4-year-old hopped up on sweets, sprinting out to the first hole a half-hour before his tee time to encourage fans to get louder and rowdier. Finally satisfied, he grinned and sprinted back to the locker room. But it wasnt long before he and Lefty had the crowd worked up again. The two are on such a roll they didnt even have to putt to win their first two holes against Lee Westwood and Luke Donald. The Europeans conceded No. 1 when Mickelson put his second within 2 feet of the pin, and they gave the Americans No. 2 after Westwood put his tee shot in the water and missed the bogey putt.Mickelsons gorgeous wedge set up Bradley with an 8-footer for birdie on No. 4, and he knocked it in easily, letting out a roar when the ball dropped into the cup. The Americans went 6 up when Donald saw another putt lip out on 10, and the Europeans may as well have conceded then, the result was so inevitable.Sure enough, two holes later, Mickelson played a perfect wedge from the rough, hitting the green about 20 feet left of the pin and trickling down a slope to within a foot of the cup.Phil is a good partner to Keegan, Donald said. Hes obviously been a rock star this week, and they did nothing wrong.Their 7-and-6 win, in fact, matched the mark for most lopsided score in an 18-hole team match. Two other teams have won 7 and 6, both foursomes, with Paul Azinger and Mark OMeara in 1991 the last to do it.The victory improved Bradley to 3-0, the best Ryder Cup start for a rookie since the guy he was playing with in 1995. And it handed Donald his second straight loss in foursomes after going unbeaten in his first six matches. The U.S. got another big boost in the final match, Jim Furyk and Brandt Snedekers 1-up victory over Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell. The Northern Irish duo are considered Europes top team. But theyve looked almost ordinary since Furyk and Snedeker forced them to grind out a victory in Fridays foursomes, and they couldnt overcome their slow start on Saturday. We were just parring the place to death, which is not good enough in this format, McDowell said. We just couldnt get the ball to go in the hole. Rory had a few putts in particular that burned some edges, and we just couldnt get any momentum going.Take the last three holes. A nice iron by McDowell gave McIlroy an easy birdie putt on 16, and he made it to pare Furyks and Snedekers lead to 1 up. But McIlroy followed that with a miss on a 15-footer that would have evened the match on 17.McIlroys monster drive on 18 put the Europeans in good position to scratch out a halve especially after Snedeker went in a bunker off the tee. But McDowell flew the green on the second shot, leaving McIlroy with a long putt from the fringe. He nearly made it, but his line was about a half-inch too far to the right and McIlroy groaned as he watched it roll on by.When Snedeker got a 25-footer to about a foot, the Europeans conceded. We are in a hole, McDowell said. These guys, theres blood in the water and theyre up for it. Theyve got a head of steam up and weve got to try and stop it.

Tottenham beat Man United 3-2 in Premier League

Posted:

Tottenham ended 23 years of hurt with a 3-2 victory over Manchester United in the English Premier League on Saturday for the north London sides first win at Old Trafford since 1989.Spurs had not beaten United since 2001 but wasted little time in showing their intent on this occasion when defender Jan Vertonghen struck a Gareth Bale pass into the bottom left corner of the goal in the second minute.Bale doubled the advantage in the 32nd with his first goal of the season. The Welsh midfielder took a pass from Mousa Dembele near the center circle and made a diagonal run through the United half to his right before shooting across goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard into the bottom left corner.Nani pulled one back from a Wayne Rooney cross early in the second half to start a flurry of three goals in three minutes.Clint Dempsey restored Spurs two-goal lead a minute later in the 52nd when he tucked in the rebound from a Lindegaard save of a Bale strike, but Shinji Kagawa immediately cut the visitors lead to 3-2.Tottenham endured a torrid half hour to end the match as goalkeeper Brad Friedel made a string of saves to preserve the win.The result ended one of English footballs longest winless streaks, as well as raising more questions over Uniteds ability to regain the Premier League title as they slipped four points behind leader Chelsea, which earlier beat Arsenal 2-1 at Emirates Stadium.Despite taking an early lead and twice leading by two goals, Tottenham never looked comfortable in the game.Vertonghen opened the scoring when he strode between Nani and Carrick, drove into the United box and found the corner of Lindegaards net.The Belgian defenders shot took a significant deflection off Jonny Evans, but Vertonghen deserved his slice of good fortune for the adventure he had shown to take himself into a scoring position.Rather than sting United into action, the early goal merely further encouraged the visitors.Bale reveled in the open spaces between Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand, with the former looking all of his 37 years during a below-par first-half display. When Robin van Persie lost possession on the edge of the Tottenham area, Dembele thundered upfield with purpose, leaving Scholes in his wake.Bale took up the running from his teammate and duly sped past Ferdinand and into the box before beating Lindegaard to make it 2-0.After resisting the temptation to name Rooney alongside Van Persie for the first time, United manager Alex Ferguson brought on the England forward to replace Ryan Giggs at the break. The move helped trigger a burst of three quickfire goals.Rooney provided the assist for Nanis close-range effort, curling a low cross to the near post that invited the clinical finish.Van Persie could claim the credit for Uniteds second as he threaded a precise pass through the Tottenham defence that allowed Kagawa to beat Friedel.Crucially, though, Tottenham struck their third goal in between Uniteds brace, Bale once again exposing poor defending as he surged forward, and when Lindegaard was unable to hold the Welshmans low shot, Dempsey was on hand to slot home the rebound.Rooney thudded a brilliant free kick against a post before Van Persies dismal attempt to finish off a Carrick pass suggested that it might not be Uniteds day.Tottenham needed to stand firm against the incessant wave of attacks.William Gallas clattered into a post in an attempt to keep Nanis far-post cross away from Rooney, then Friedel turned away a Scholes strike.Carricks header almost sneaked in but dropped against the angle of post and bar instead.United continued to surge, but it was not its day, after 23 years.

FIFA names 2018 World Cup venues in Russia

Two stadiums in Moscow will host some 2018 World Cup games, among the dozen arenas finalized by FIFA on Saturday for the first cup in Russia. The centerpiece will be Moscows 89,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the Champions League final in 2008. Work on redeveloping it is due for completion in 2016.Spartak Moscows stadium also made the cut over the arena being built for Dynamo Moscow, which was squeezed out as a result of FIFA decreeing that only two stadiums could be used in the capital.Among the 11 cities to host matches are St. Petersburg, and the Black Sea city of Sochi, which is also set to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The others are Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Nizhny Novgorod, Rostov-on-Don, Samara, Kaliningrad, Volgograd and Saransk. With the exception of Yekaterinburg, all the host cities lie west of the Urals Mountains, which is traditionally deemed to mark the boundary between Europe and Asia. Some have nonetheless raised concerns about the distances some football fans may have to travel.Arenas in Kaliningrad, a Baltic Sea exclave tucked between Poland and Lithuania, and Yekaterinburg will be separated by 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) and three time zones.Russian football officials have pointed out that distances have also been great in previous host nations.Russian President Vladimir Putin also said on Saturday that air and railway travel would be subsidized during the competition, which will bring costs down for fans.Nobody will be left out in this festival of sport, Putin said.Russia has faced questions about its ability to successfully organize the competition amid concern at reports of rampant racism seen among football fans at the nations stadiums.Sports Minister Vitaly Mutko has pledged that Russia will work hard to combat discrimination among fans.FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at the venue announcement that Russias preparations were ahead of schedule.

Kvitova marches through to Beijing second round

Posted:

Fourth seed Petra Kvitova sent out a message of intent on Saturday, convincingly defeating Slovakias Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets to progress to the second round of the China Open in Beijing. The world number five from the Czech Republic was in full control throughout almost all of her first round match at the capitals National Tennis Stadium, powerfully overcoming her opponent, ranked 33 in the WTA standings, 6-2, 6-3.Kvitova, last years Wimbledon champion, broke Hantuchovas serve in the fifth game of the first set to take a 3-2 lead and never looked back, winning the set without further reply before quickly racing ahead 3-0 in the second.A couple of dropped games in quick succession momentarily stemmed Kvitovas momentum but her big-hitting ultimately proved too much for Hantuchova who appeared tired and started to make unforced errors with increasing regularity.Kvitova credited her win to some good returns and an improvement in her service game, something that has disappointed her of late, adding that she was happy to have won in straight sets.Earlier, former world number one Ana Ivanovic eased into the second round, defeating American Christina McHale in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.The 24-year-old Serbian played aggressively from the start, hitting big first serves and powerful forehand drives which McHale, ranked 28 in the world, was unable to match. The world number 12 will play American Varvara Lepchenko, who defeated Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, in the second round.Ivanovic admitted she didnt know much about her next opponent but was aware that she serves big and has a powerful game. Also in the first round on Saturday Taiwans Hsieh Su-Wei, winner of the Guangzhou Open this month, defeated Zheng Saisai of China 6-2, 6-3 while in an all-Chinese clash Zhang Shuai beat Wang Qiang 6-3, 6-2.Romina Oprandi of Switzerland and Spains Carla Suarez Navarro also progressed to the second round, as did Yaroslava Shvedova from Kazakhstan who was 6-4, 4-1 up when her opponent and 12th seed Dominika Cibulkova retired due to an injury. In the final match of the day Tamira Paszek of Austria and Olga Govortsova of Belarus played out a three-set thriller with the former finally triumphing 7-5, 0-6, 7-6 (8/6).

During a ministerial meeting of the Alliance of Civilizations Group of Friends, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar regretted that the instances of religious intolerance and acts of incitement like the release of blasphemous video - that has sparked to protests in Muslim countries - were on the rise. These incidents are not only sowing the seeds of of religious hatred, discrimination and violence among and within societies but are also a serious threat to the maintenance of international peace and security, she maintained. She lauded the UN-backed initiative that seeks to promote better cross-cultural relations worldwide, and called for stepped up efforts to promote interfaith harmony in the wake of the release of the anti-Islam video. The United Nations as well as all member states have the duty to urgently address these negative trends, she said while adding that the member states must take appropriate actions to ensure protection against such acts in accordance with relevant international law. The UN, in collaboration with the alliance, must increase its efforts to promote interfaith and intercultural dialogue and harmony, she emphasized. The Alliance was launched in 2005 through the initiative of Spain and Turkey, underthea aehis of the UN. Shortly after the release of the video, the Alliance launched an initiative to ensure that the voices of moderation were not silenced by the vocal and violent minorities on any side. Called “Represent Yourself,” the Twitter campaign engaged more than 3 million people in just a few days.“This is one small example,” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told the meeting. “Time and time again, the Alliance has shown how it can help open minds and seek change on the ground. It does so by empowering youth around the world, inviting tomorrow’s leaders to take part in cross-cultural exchanges, training journalists to keep the public better informed and much more.”Mr. Ban ki-Moon also announced designating Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, the President of the Assembly’s 66th session, as High Representative for the Alliance. Al-Nasser replaces Jorge Sampaio, former President of Portugal, who led the initiative for five years. Sampaio will step down following the next Alliance forum, which is scheduled for February 2013 and will focus on the issue of responsible leadership. As the Alliance renews its leadership, the Secretary-General urged participants to renew their commitment, engagement and support. “The challenges we face are clear and connected.
