EC seeks fresh affidavits on nationality

ISLAMABAD, Sept 29: The Election Commission (EC) has sent letters to the secretaries of the two houses of parliament and the four provincial assemblies seeking fresh declarations from the lawmakers affirming that they do not hold nationality of any country other than Pakistan.

Mengal mocks Malik’s claim of foreign involvement in Balochistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 29: The chief of Balochistan National Party-M (BNP-M), Sardar Akhtar Mengal, ridiculed Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s claim on Saturday about foreign involvement in Balochistan and criticised the government, especially the security forces, for their stance in the Supreme Court.

“I don’t know why foreign hands are visible only to Rehman Malik and the agencies” the BNP leader said while talking to reporters after meeting Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan.

Nine babies die at Larkana hospital

LARKANA, Sept 29: The Chandka Medical College Hospital (CMCH) confirmed on Saturday the death of nine newborn children in 12 hours at its paediatrics department.

Taking notice of the deaths in the hospital, Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ebad Khan, Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Health Minister Dr Sagheer Ahmed ordered an inquiry into the tragedy.

Two jail officials shot dead

KARACHI, Sept 29: A jailer and his assistant were gunned down in Gulshan-i-Iqbal area of the city on Saturday, officials said.

They said armed men on a motorbike intercepted the car of jail superintendent Abdul Razzaq Abbasi and assistant superintendent Pir Masood near NIPA roundabout when they were going home.

PTI losing ground amid PML-N surge: IRI survey

NEW YORK, Sept 29: Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf’s popularity has gone down by a massive 22 per cent among likely voters in the next general election in 2013, says a recent report by a US surveyor.

The survey, conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), has shown the Pakistan Muslim League-N has witnessed an increase of 3.7 per cent in its popularity.

Karachi reverts to Musharraf-era police order

KARACHI, Sept 29: The provincial government on Saturday set in motion the process of installing the new local bodies structure by issuing a notification to implement the Sindh People’s Local Government Ordinance (SPLGO) 2012.

The new order carries almost the same features that were part of the model introduced by former president Pervez Musharraf in 2001. It also brought his brainchild Police Order of 2002 back into life, notifying restructuring of the key law-enforcement agency only in Karachi in an apparent move to win over a key ally – the Muttahida Qaumi Movement.

OIC hails Pakistan’s talks with India

NEW YORK, Sept 29: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation on Saturday praised Pakistan for engaging with India to resolve the Kashmir and other disputes.

In a joint communique issued after its coordination meeting, OIC foreign ministers condemned the anti-Islam film made in the US. But they urged Muslim nations not to resort to violence while protesting against the video.

Kayani to visit Russia from Oct 3

ISLAMABAD, Sept 29: With Russian President Vladimir Putin’s cancelled visit still a hot issue at home, Army Chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani will be visiting Moscow next week on a four-day visit.

“Dates for Gen Kayani’s visit to Russia have been finalised and he would be in Moscow from Oct 3-6,” a close aide to the army chief told Dawn.

Journalist shot dead in Khuzdar

QUETTA, Sept 29: The general secretary of the Khuzdar Press Club and reporter of a private television channel, Abdul Haq Baloch, was gunned down in Khuzdar on Saturday evening.

According to sources, he was going home from the press club when armed men on motor bikes opened fire on him.

Wildlife officer in trouble for punishing poachers

KARACHI, Sept 29: A Balochistan Wildlife Department official ran into trouble after he caught and fined four poachers, among them a national of an Arab country, for illegally hunting rare species of ibex, sources said.

On Sept 20 at the Nani checkpost in Macchi area of Kund Malir, BWD’s Range Forest Officer Abdul Rehman found Shakoor Ahmed, Ali Baloch, Shabbir and an unidentified Arab national in possession of carcasses of two rare ibexes illegally hunted in the Hingol National Park. A case was registered against the poachers and a fine of Rs 80,000 imposed.

Sri Lanka thump West Indies

PALLEKELE, Sept 29: Hosts Sri Lanka outsmarted the West Indies by nine wickets to move one step closer to a semi-final berth after winning their Super Eights group one match at Pallekele stadium on Saturday.

Sri Lankan spinners kept the West Indian big hitters to 129-5 in 20 overs before chasing the modest target in the 16th over for the loss of only one wicket to record their second win in the round of eight teams.

Fresh warrants issued in 15-year-old AJK case

MUZAFFARABAD, Sept 29: A court here on Saturday issued fresh non-bailable arrest warrants for 10 of the 14 accused, including a veteran pro-independence leader and a sitting AJK minister, in a case registered against them 15 years ago.

Additional Sessions Judge Mian Arif Hussain, who had issued similar warrants against the accused last week, expressed anger over non-compliance by the local police and ordered the senior superintendent of police, Muzaffarabad, to ensure that the accused were produced before the court on Oct 15. He warned that police officials would face action if they failed to arrest the accused.
