Pakistan to end IMF programme

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: The finance minister and his team are off to Washington to preside over the end of the current IMF programme. Of the nine programmes that Pakistan got into with the Fund, eight have been unsuccessful.
The government's inability to implement three major economic policy commitments limiting fiscal deficit to 4.7 per cent of GDP, introducing integrated value added tax (VAT) and power sector reforms will lead to technical completion of an unsuccessful $11.3 billion programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on September 30, according to Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh...

ISLAMABAD, Sept 16: On the face of it, Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani cancelled his planned trip to the US on Friday because 'he personally wanted to supervise ongoing relief efforts in flood-hit areas of Sindh'. However, there are indications that strained relations between the two countries have led to calling off his trip to America where he was to address a UN General Assembly session.
One reason for calling off the visit, sources told Dawn, was the American president's refusal to meet him on the sidelines of the General Assembly session scheduled for next week. They said the Pakistan embassy in Washington and consulate general in New York had tried hard to arrange a meeting between Prime Minister Gilani and President Barack Obama, but failed...

Toll in Lower Dir blast soars to 45

TIMERGARA, Sept 16: The death toll in Thursday's suicide bombing in Lower Dir area of Samar Bagh rose to 45, DCO Mahmood Aslam Wazir said on Friday. About 100 people injured in the attack were in different hospitals.
