Sindh PPP wants deadline for voter verification extended

KARACHI, Sept 25: The Sindh PPP has urged the Election Commission to extend the date for verification of draft electoral rolls by one or two months to enable the rain-affected people to get their names enlisted after returning to their homes.
 
A meeting of the party's Sindh council presided over by Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah also recommended to the government on Sunday to remove all encroachments on natural water courses of the Indus to clear the flow of rain and floodwater into the sea without any obstruction...

IMF team to visit Pakistan in November, says minister

WASHINGTON, Sept 25: A team of experts from the International Monetary Fund will visit Islamabad in November for talks with Pakistani officials, says Finance Minister Abdul Hafiz Shaikh.
 
The finance minister told a select gathering at the Pakistan embassy on Saturday night that while Pakistan was not seeking another loan from the IMF, it would continue to hold Article IV consultations with the organisation...

Commanders 'in favour of defusing tensions'

ISLAMABAD, Sept 25: Top army commanders held an extraordinary meeting on Sunday in the wake of US allegations about ISI's links with the Haqqani network and agreed on the need to de-escalate the situation.
 
Holding a corps commanders' meeting, possibly for the first time on a Sunday, reflected the seriousness of the crisis created by a series of allegations levelled by US officials against Pakistan's security forces and its top intelligence agency. However, the military's public affairs wing, ISPR, didn't say a word about the outcome of the meeting chaired by Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. Earlier in the day the ISPR had announced that a special corps commanders' conference had been convened to "discuss the prevailing security situation"...

Afghanistan warning over shelling

KABUL, Sept 25: Afghan defence officials asked Pakistan on Sunday "to stop firing rockets and heavy artillery" into the northeast of the country or the military would respond with force. Pakistan denied it was responsible.
 
In its strongest condemnation to date, the Afghan defence ministry accused the Pakistani army of firing more than 300 artillery rounds and rockets into Kunar and Nuristan provinces during the past five days...

Various options being considered, says White House adviser

Khar criticises US bid to makePakistan scapegoat for its failure

NEW YORK: Decrying Washington's desire to use Pakistan as a "scapegoat" for the lack of success in war in Afghanistan, Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar 'unequivocally' denied any Pakistani involvement in any attack on US forces last week.
 
In an interview with the CBS TV, she refuted the allegations levelled by the chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen that the ISI was helping militants in attacks on US targets inside Afghanistan...

Carbon credits to be claimed on 34 projects

ISLAMABAD, Sept 25: Pakistan is preparing to claim carbon credits on 34 hydropower projects under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the United Nations Framework Convention of Climate Change (UNFCCC).
 
According to sources, the government has already forwarded the cases of 17 major projects to the UNFCCC, validating consultancy reports that these schemes will be helpful in significantly reducing greenhouse gases and hence can qualify for the carbon credits...
