Ties with China hailed: Gilani cautions US on negative messaging

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: Pakistan warned the United States on Tuesday to stop accusing it of playing a double game with militants and heaped praise on 'all-weather friend' China, promising maximum support to the neighbouring country in fighting separatists. 
 
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, speaking to Reuters, said any unilateral military action by the US to hunt down militants of the Haqqani network inside Pakistan would be a violation of his country's sovereignty. ..

Munter meets Zardari after talks at Foreign Office

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: US Ambassador Cameron Munter met President Asif Ali Zardari at the presidency on Tuesday after his second meeting in two days with Foreign Secretary Salman Bashir.
 
Presidency's Spokesman Farhatullah Babar only said the president and the ambassador discussed bilateral relations.He declined to give details of issues taken up, but sources said that the ambassador might have conveyed to the president some message from his government...

Hina Khar offers 'uninterrupted' talks to India

UNITED NATIONS: Pakistan held out an olive branch to India on Tuesday for the resolution of all disputes, including Jammu and Kashmir, through a "dialogue process", hoping it will be "uninterrupted and uninterruptible".
 
"We certainly intend to make this engagement fruitful and premise it on the promise of a mutually rewarding enterprise that would enable us to optimally avail the complementarities that exist," Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar underscored in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly...

Students buried: Violation of rules led to fatal bus crash

FAISALABAD/ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: The ill-fated bus which met with an accident near Kallar Kahar leaving at least 31 students and four adults dead, had no permit for the Islamabad route.
 
And the Motorway Police, always praised for its efficiency, failed to check the heavily overloaded vehicle carrying students of the Millat Grammar School, Faisalabad, for a picnic in the Salt range. The bus veered off the road and fell into a ravine when its brakes failed. The 1981 model bus was reconditioned in 2002 and registered with the Excise and Taxation Department...

Drone kills three in Waziristan

LADDAH: Three people were killed and four others injured on Tuesday night when missiles fired by a US drone slammed into a house about 10km west of Wana, the headquarters of South Waziristan Agency.

Shortfall exceeds 6,000 megawatts: Dams release more water to boost power generation

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: As the power shortfall exceeded 6,000 megawatts because of fuel and financial problems, the government prevailed upon the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) on Tuesday to enhance water discharges from the two major reservoirs to reduce loadshedding as an emergency measure.
 
An official told Dawn that on the desire of the ministry of water and power Irsa increased releases from Tarbela Dam by 41 per cent and Mangla by 26 per cent for an additional power generation of about 1,500MW, although the provinces did not have watering requirements...

Sovereign guarantee for Nandipur plant cleared

ISLAMABAD: A legal hitch holding up the 425MW Nandipur power project for more than two years has been removed, paving the way for a leading Chinese company to start physical work on two projects of 950MW generation capacity next month.
 
Sources said the ministry of law had cleared a sovereign guarantee issued by the finance ministry on the proposal of the Pakistan Electric Power Company to mobilise the Dongfeng Electric Corporation into starting the $329 million project...

Dubai-based US firm gets contract to buy spares for PIA

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: The government has awarded a multi-billion-dollar contract to a Dubai-based US firm for purchase of spare parts, consumable material and chemicals for PIA aircraft, sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

Commission offers Malik to question witnesses

ISLAMABAD, Sept 27: A judicial commission asked to investigate if Interior Minister Rehman Malik had tried to influence the FIA probe into the National Insurance Company Limited  scam has offered the minister an opportunity to cross-examine witnesses, including FIA Additional Director General Zafar Qureshi, who had testified against him in the Supreme Court.
 
According to sources, the commission headed by Justice Ghulam Rabbani directed Attorney General Maulvi Anwarul Haq on Tuesday to ask Mr Malik if he was interested in cross-examining the witnesses. Justice Rabbani also asked the AG to provide Mr Malik copies of affidavits submitted by Mr Qureshi and others and report to the commission by Thursday if the minister was interested in defending himself...
