White House refuses to endorse Mullen's claims

WASHINGTON, Sept 28: The White House refused on Wednesday to endorse Admiral Mike Mullen's description of Pakistan's links with the Haqqani network, saying that it would "not use the language" that the US military chief had used.
 
Admiral Mullen told a Senate hearing last week that the Haqqani network of terrorists was "a veritable arm" of the ISI and that the Pakistani intelligence agency had directed its attacks on US targets inside Afghanistan...

TIMERGARA, Sept 28: Security forces claimed on Wednesday to have repulsed an attack launched by militants in Kharkai and Binshahi areas of Lower Dir and killed 35 of the assailants.
 
Talking to reporters, ISPR regional head Lt-Col Arif said that hundreds of Afghan militants had attacked security forces when they were setting up checkpoints on the border. Punjab plans flood control measures for 100 years

ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: In view of an increasing frequency and intensity of floods, the Punjab government has decided to take flood protection measures for 100 years, starting with capacity enhancement of Sulemanki and Trimmu barrages to let more waters pass through major structures with minimum loss.
 
A senior official of the ministry of water and power told Dawn that the provincial government had sought advisory support from the federal government to start rehabilitation and upgradation of the barrages which are more than eight decades old. The Asian Development Bank has already agreed to extend $900 million for the Punjab Irrigated Agriculture Investment Programme (PIAP)...

ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: The corridors of powers will be abuzz for the next couple of days when the important decision of who will take over Pakistan's premier civilian intelligence agency, the Intelligence Bureau (IB), after the retirement of Javed Noor on October 1.
 
Mr Noor, a grade 22 officer, took over as Director General of IB on May 17, 2009, replacing Dr Shoaib Suddle. Before then he was the Inspector General of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Police. He was the second consecutive civilian chief of the agency after a long stint of military men who headed the organisation before and during the Musharraf regime...

PIA asked to declare spares contract as 'mis-procurement'

ISLAMABAD, Sept 28: The Transparency International Pakistan (TIP) has asked the PIA management to declare the reported award of $200 million contract to a Dubai-based company for supply of spare parts for five years as 'mis-procurement' because it is a violation of Public Procurement Rules of 2004.
