| Markel coalition suffers Berlin poll rout Posted:

Merkel s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) were beaten into second place in the poll.

Chancellor Angela Merkel s coalition suffered a painful blow in a regional election in Berlin Sunday, early results showed, amid voter anger over the German leader s handling of the eurozone debt crisis.
Merkel s conservative Christian Democrats (CDU) were beaten into second place in the poll, albeit with a slight rise in support compared to previous elections in 2006.
But the junior partner in her fractious coalition, the Free Democrats (FDP), saw its electoral support plummeting again. It failed by a wide margin to clear the five-percent hurdle needed in Germany for representation in parliament.
Berlin s popular and colourful Social Democrat mayor, Klaus Wowereit, secured 29.2 percent of the vote, according to initial results published by ARD television channel, meaning he must now choose a coalition partner.
Living up to his image as a party animal, Wowereit jumped around the stage in front of his supporters after the results were made public, clapping his hands to thumping pop music.
"Let me just say this: I ve seen the other election parties on television and ours is definitely the best," he shouted to thunderous applause.
Merkel s CDU won 23.4 percent, a gain in comparison to the 21.3 percent they gained five years ago in the left-leaning German capital.
The ecologist Green party, which has seen its popularity gain steadily since Japan s Fukushima catastrophe in March due to their anti-nuclear stance, clinched 17.9 percent.
A major success story of the election was the spectacular rise of the Pirate Party, which secured its first-ever parliamentary representation in one of Germany s 16 states, winning 8.6 percent of the vote.
An irreverent outfit with roots in Scandinavia, the Pirate Party calls for free wireless Internet service for all, unlimited access to public transportation funded by taxes and better data protection.
But the losers of the election were once again the FDP, which was ejected from the parliament with a mere 1.8 percent.
This followed a humiliation two weeks ago in Merkel s home state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, where they were beaten handily by the neo-Nazi NPD party.

|

| Man United keep up perfect start against Chelsea Posted:

Manchester United overcame title rival Chelsea on Sunday with a fifth successive victory maintaining the champion s perfect start in the Premier League after neighbour Manchester City dropped points for the first time this season at Fulham.

Wayne Rooney scored one before missing from the penalty spot as United beat Chelsea 3-1 to give the club its best start to the season since 1985.

Fernando Torres had managed to score his first goal of the campaign, but the Chelsea striker then missed an open goal.
"You have an example of Rooney missing a penalty too, which is basically the same," Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said. "The worst things happen to the best strikers in the world and today it happened to both of them."

United now has a two-point lead over City after its local rival threw away a two-goal lead to draw 2-2 at Fulham.
Also Sunday, Emmanuel Adebayor scored twice as Tottenham cruised to a 4-0 victory over nine-man Liverpool and Sunderland routed Stoke by the same scoreline.

But it is United leading the way after a record-equaling 18th consecutive Premier League win at Old Trafford.

Slack marking allowed United to go in front after eight minutes, with Chris Smalling heading in Ashley Young s free kick.

The second goal in the 37th minute was more spectacular. Nani took on three defenders before launching a fierce strike from outside the penalty area into the top of the net.

Rooney s goal came on the stroke of halftime, tapping in his ninth goal of the season after John Terry s attempted clearance bounced off Nani and into his path.

Chelsea, though, produced the perfect response at the start of the second half, with Torres scoring inside 30 seconds just his second goal since arriving from Liverpool in January.

The Spain striker skillfully put the ball over United goalkeeper David de Gea after being fed by Nicolas Anelka, who had replaced Frank Lampard moments earlier.

Chelsea s fortunes looked to be turning when Rooney sent his penalty kick wide after Jose Bosingwa tripped Nani.

But Torres spectacularly squandered an easy chance to make it 3-2, shooting wide of the net after rounding De Gea with the goal at his mercy.

At Craven Cottage, City was on course to register a fifth consecutive win like United before imploding after Sergio Aguero had made it eight goals in five matches.

Aguero latched onto David Silva s clipped through-ball before finishing neatly into the bottom corner in the 18th. The second came at the start of the second half when the Argentina striker collected Edin Dzeko s nod down and fired a low shot into the corner from just outside the area.

But Bobby Zamora began Fulham s comeback in the 55th, smashing a rising shot with his right foot into the top corner.
And the equalizer came with 15 minutes to go after Danny Murphy s 25-metre (yard) shot took a wicked deflection off City captain Vincent Kompany and squirmed into the net past wrongfooted goalkeeper Joe Hart.

At White Hart Lane, Tottenham was completely rampant against Liverpool after Luka Modric curled in a stunning opener after seven minutes.

A sluggish Liverpool side was already struggling when Charlie Adam was dismissed after a rash challenge on Scott Parker in the 28th, while Martin Skrtel saw red in the 63rd after being penalized again for fouling Gareth Bale.

It was followed by quick-fire goals for Jermain Defoe after rounding Jose Enrique, and Emmanuel Adebayor who tapped into the net after lifting the ball over goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

The Togo striker scored again in stoppage time when he brought down Benoit Assou-Ekotto s pass.

At Sunderland, Stoke lost for the first time this season while the hosts tasted success for the first time

Inside 11 minutes, Titus Bramble netted his first Sunderland goal and Jonathan Woodgate scored an own goal.
Craig Gardner added the third with a deflected strike and Sebastian Larsson rounded off the victory with a 58th-minute free kick.

|
| Libya delays unveiling new cabinet as battles rage Posted:

The birth of a new government in Libya, which was due on Sunday, was put off indefinitely amid disputes over portfolios and as Moammar Gaddafi diehards put up stiff resistance in their remaining strongholds.

National Transitional Council (NTC) number two Mahmud Jibril said last-minute haggling delayed the announcement of the new cabinet line-up before reluctantly announcing to the media that the unveiling would be postponed indefinitely.

Progress by NTC fighters hoping to crush the last pockets of resistance in Gaddafi bastions also appeared stalemated, as the fugitive s loyalists in his hometown of Sirte and the oasis of Bani Walid refused to yield.

"The announcement of a new transitional government has been postponed indefinitely in order to finalise consultations," Jibril told reporters in Benghazi.

But putting on a brave face, Jibril said much has been achieved to mete out several portfolios, adding that he expected consultations on the rest to be "over quickly."

"But I believe that an essential part of these consultations was completed today."

The administration will also look into getting women and young people to play a major role in a new government as deputy ministers and directors general of ministries, he added.

Jibril, a former Gaddafi regime official, has stood accused by some colleagues of failing to consult enough with long-standing grass roots opposition groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood.

Jibril himself was expected to retain his post as interim premier, while Ali Tarhuni was touted to be named vice president in charge of economic affairs.

The defence portfolio was expected to go to Osama al-Juwili and oil to Abdel Rahman bin Yezza.

On the battlefield, Gaddafi diehards in his hometown Sirte and in Bani Walid stood their ground as NTC combatants tried to break their morale by preparing for a new multi-pronged advance.

NTC military spokesman Ahmed Omar Bani said he expected Gaddafi forces in Sirte and Bani Walid to be defeated in a "matter of days," and military commanders said they had gained some ground.

"We are now 38 kilometres (23.5 miles) from Sirte," Mustafa bin Dardaf, a commander with the Zintan Brigade said.
Another commander, Walid al-Feturi of Al-Qabha Brigade said that the fighters were clearing roads for civilians to flee Sirte.

"We are trying to get out family and children step by step," Feturi said.

|
| Yemeni forces open fire on protesters, 26 killed Posted:

Yemeni government forces opened fire with anti-aircraft guns and automatic weapons on tens of thousands of anti-government protesters in the capital demanding ouster of their longtime ruler, killing at least 26 and wounding dozens, medical officials and witnesses said.

After nightfall, Sanaa sank into complete darkness after a sudden power outage, as protesters took control of a vital bridge, halting traffic and setting up tents. Thousands of other protesters attacked government buildings and set fires to buildings they said were used by snipers and pro-government thugs.

The attack was the deadliest in months against protesters and comes as tensions have been escalating in the long, drawn-out stalemate between the regime and the opposition. The president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, left for Saudi Arabia for treatment after being severely wounded in a June 3 attack on his palace, raising hopes for his swift removal but instead, he has dug in, refusing to step down.

The protest movement has stepped up demonstrations the past week, angered after Saleh deputized Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi to negotiate a power-transfer deal. Many believe the move is just the latest of many delaying tactics.
At the same time, greater numbers of the powerful Republican Guards force, led by Saleh s son and heir apparent Ahmed and armed regime supporters have also been turning out in the streets in recent days, raising fears of a new bloody confrontation.

More than 100,000 protesters massed around the state radio building and government offices, witnesses said. When the crowd began to march toward the nearby Presidential Palace, security forces opened fire and shot tear gas canisters, they said. Snipers fired down at the crowd from nearby rooftops, and plainclothes Saleh supporters armed with automatic rifles, swords and batons attacked the protesters. Protesters took control of a main bridge, closed off the entrances and set fire to tents in a camp used by pro-government forces.

"This peaceful protest was confronted by heavy weapons and anti-aircraft guns," said Mohammed al-Sabri, an opposition spokesman. He vowed that the intensifying protests "will not stop and will not retreat."

At the neighbourhood of al-Zubairi in the heart of Sanaa, troops opened fire at an anti-government force, the 1st Armored Division led by Maj. Gen. Ali al-Ahmar, who defected to the opposition along with his 50,000 troops several months ago.

Witnesses said al-Ahmar s forces engaged in the fighting for the first time, but Abdel-Ghani al-Shemari, spokesman for al-Ahmar division denied that and said they are "maintaining self-restraint."

Tarek Noaman, a doctor at Sanaa field hospital, said that 26 protesters were shot dead and more than 200 were wounded. "Most of the injuries are at the chest, shoulder, head and face," he said, and said 25 of injured protesters were in critical condition.

He accused security forces of preventing ambulances from evacuating the wounded and collecting bodies of the slain protesters.

|
| UK surgeons separate twin girls joined at head Posted:

The twins were separated in a rare and risky series of operations at a London children s hospital, officials said.

Facing the World, a charity which helps disfigured children, said it had helped fund the four-stage operation to split 11-month-old Rital Gaboura from her sister, Ritag. Twins born joined at the head are known as craniopagus twins and they occur in about one in 2.5 million births. Splitting them can be dangerous, especially if as in this case there s significant blood flow between their brains.

"Incidences of surviving twins with this condition is extremely rare," lead surgeon David Dunaway said in a statement released by the charity. "The task presented innumerable challenges and we were all very aware of our responsibilities to the family and these two little girls."

The charity released before and after photographs of the girls. The before photo showed the two sprawled out on a bed, with their heads joined just above the hairline to form what appeared to be a single, solid unit. Facing the World said that separation took place in stages at London s Great Ormond Street Hospital, with two operations in May, the insertion of tissue expanders in July and the final separation on Aug. 15.

"Within days the twins were back on the general ward interacting and playing as before," the charity said. Its executive coordinator, Sarah Driver-Jowitt, predicted that the girls parents who haven t been named may soon return home "with two healthy, separate girls."

Although rare, operations to separate twins linked by their heads aren t unheard of. In 2004, a team of doctors at New York s Montefiore Children s Hospital separated Filipino twins in four major surgeries that took place over 10 months. In 2003, surgeons in Dallas successfully separated 2-year-old Egyptian twins joined at the head.

One of the first successful operations to separate craniopagus twins took place in 1956, according to the U.S. National Library of Medicine.

|
| UN needs $357 million to cope with Pakistan floods Posted:

Millions of Pakistanis are affected by floods that have damaged hundreds of thousands of homes and destroyed millions of acres of crops.

Pakistan often experiences flooding from monsoon rains that lash much of South Asia from June to September. This year the rains have been heavier than normal, coming as many people were still trying to recover from last year s floods, which were the worst in the country s history.

The money from the appeal would be used to help more than 5.4 million people in the provinces of Sindh and Baluchistan over the next six months, said Humaira Mehboob, a spokeswoman for the UN s humanitarian arm. Those provinces have been the worst hit by the floods this year.

The floods have killed 223 people in Sindh alone, damaged or destroyed around 665,000 homes and displaced more than 1.8 million people, according to a rapid response plan issued by the UN on Sunday.

"The situation of the people who have been forced to leave their homes is dire, and there is clear evidence of growing humanitarian needs," said the response plan.

The return of the floods is testament to the heaviness of the monsoon rains and the limits of Pakistan s weak and corrupt government, showing up its ineffectiveness in the crisis.

As they did last year, the floods are undercutting the legitimacy of the shaky government, which is already widely disliked and struggling against Islamist militants, ever present political turmoil and massive economic problems.

In 2010, the floods followed the course of the River Indus and its tributaries from the foothills of the Himalayas to the flatlands of Sindh, where the river empties out into the Arabian Sea.

As much as one-fifth of the country s landmass and 20 million people were affected at the peak, making it one of the largest natural disasters in recent history. The US army deployed helicopters to ferry victims and aid around the country, and the UN and other international aid groups also helped.

Many of those countries, including the US, have mobilized again this year to help flood victims. The US has said it paid for food packages for 23,000 families and its local partners will soon begin handing out tents, clean water and other supplies. Japan and China have also pledged relief goods or money, according to the Pakistan government.

"The magnitude of disaster is much beyond the capacity of Pakistan," Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani told flood victims on Sunday.

|
| Syrian opposition calls on Assad to end crackdown Posted:

Dozens of Syrian opposition members called on President Bashar Assad Sunday to end his deadly six-month crackdown or face an escalation in peaceful protests, as security forces fired warning shots to disperse high school students calling for the regime s downfall.

The weekend meeting drew more than 200 opposition figures, including leading writer Michel Kilo and Hassan Abdul-Azim, who heads the outlawed Arab Socialist Democratic Union party. It was also notable because it took place inside Syria, rather than in a neighboring country, as most others have.

A statement released after the meeting called on Assad s regime to immediately end its "acts of repression," and it urged protesters to keep their movement peaceful and not be tempted to take up arms. The opposition members also stuck by an earlier position to oppose international intervention in Syria, though some protesters on the streets have called for unspecified outside help.

The Syrian uprising began in mid-March, amid the wave of protests in the Arab world that have toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Assad has responded with force in a crackdown that the U.N. estimates has killed some 2,600 people.

|
| Burger burglar gets stuck in vent Posted:

Police at the scene said Edward Lawson scaled the brand new Burger Haven restaurant early Thursday morning and noticed an old AC unit cover.

"They ripped it off and got halfway in the store and they couldn t go anywhere else. So he was just hanging there," said owner George Nakhle. The man was stuck in the vent.

"I mean, that s hilarious to me. Wouldn t you feel the same way? That s funny," said Nakhle. Someone spotted Lawson on the roof and called 911. When officers arrived, they couldn t find the guy at first. Then, they saw his legs dangling from the ceiling.

The man was rescued and arrested in a matter of hours and booked into jail.
