| Bridgette Jordan wins shortest woman record Posted:

Bridgette Jordan may be the world’s shortest woman, but she’s long on heart.

Jordan, a 22-year-old student at Kaskasia College in Centralia, has just been declared the world s shortest woman by Guinness World Records.

Her record-setting height of 2 feet, 3 inches allowed her to beat out the previous record holder, Elif Kocaman of Kadirli, Turkey, who measured 2 feet, 4.5 inches. However, Jordan s reign as the world s shortest woman could be short-lived.
Currently, Guinness recognizes Jyoti Amge, 17, of Nagpur, India, as the world s shortest teenager. Amge measures just 2 feet tall. If she maintains that height when she turns 18, Guinness may give her the honor as the world s shortest woman.

|
| Posted:

But NASA is well aware that American astronauts can’t keep hitching a ride on Russian spacecraft for the rest of the ISS s projected 9 year lifespan. In a draft solicitation issued by the government on Monday, NASA announced that the agency will be accepting bids from private companies to act as extraterrestrial taxis.

NASA is offering $1.6 billion in federal funding to help the company or companies develop a complete system, from mission control to launch structures to the vehicles themselves. Currently NASA funding helps support four privately-owned companies: Boeing, SpaceX, Sierra Nevada Corp, and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos company, Blue Origin.

At the moment, the Russian spaceflight program is a glaring single point of failure for the ISS, as highlighted last month when a cargo ship failed to reach orbit in a launch accident. Such incidents cause NASA s commercial spaceflight development director Phil McAlister to worry “Every year we do not have a commercial crew capability, the station is at risk.”

|

| US urges Pakistan to take action against Haqqani network Posted:

“Our biggest concern right now is to put as much pressure as possible on the Pakistanis to exercise control from their side of the border,” Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said during a Pentagon news briefing with Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

“We have continued to state that this cannot happen. We cannot have the Haqqanis coming across the border attacking our forces and [Afghans] and disappearing back into a safe haven,” the secretary said. “That is not tolerable, and we have urged them to take steps.” Panetta declined to discuss specific strategies, including whether the United States would consider unilateral action. He did say, however, “We are going to take whatever steps are necessary to protect our forces.”

It’s in the best interest of the Pakistanis to deal with terrorists within their borders, he said. “Frankly, terrorism is as much a threat for them as it is for us,” he said. “And we keep telling them you can’t choose among terrorists. If you are against terrorism, you have to be against all forms of terrorism. And that is something we just have to continue to stress.”

Mullen said he made clear during his meeting last week with Pakistani Army Chief of Staff Gen. Ashfaq Parvez Kayani that Pakistan needs to do more. Among issues he raised were the Haqqanis’ proxy ties to Pakistan’s Inter-Service Intelligence agency and their role in killing coalition troops and Afghans in Afghanistan.

|
