| Libyan forces fight for Gaddafi's hometown Sirte Posted:

With NATO jets roaring overhead, revolutionary forces fought their way into Moammar Gaddafi s hometown Saturday in the first significant push into the stubborn stronghold in about a week.

Libya s new leaders also tried to move on the political front, promising to announce in the coming week a new interim government that it hopes will help unite the country. However, disagreements remain about what the Cabinet should look like.

The National Transitional Council led the rebellion that forced Gaddafi into hiding and has taken over the leadership of the oil-rich North African nation even as it continues to fight forces still loyal to the fugitive leader.

NTC chief Mustafa Abdul-Jalil, speaking to reporters in Benghazi after returning to Libya from New York where he attended the UN General Assembly, acknowledged differences but said a new government would be named next week to guide the country until formal elections can be held.

"This is the crisis management phase and it should be led by people who are efficient, even if they have to be from the same city, until the liberation of the country and until the constitution is established," he said. "Then they can choose a government that they want."

Revolutionary forces also have been unable to rout well-armed Gaddafi loyalists from strongholds in his hometown of Sirte, Bani Walid and several southern enclaves.

Hundreds of fighters launched a new assault on Sirte on Saturday, a week after heavy fighting forced them to pull back to the city s outskirts. Explosions rocked the city and smoke rose into the sky as Gaddafi s forces fired mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades at the fighters. Ambulances sped from the direction of the front line, and a doctor said at least one fighter was killed and 25 others wounded in the battle.

Osama Nuttawa al-Swehli, who was helping coordinate the advance, said fighters moved on the city from four different areas, meeting heavy resistance. He said NATO airstrikes took out some of the loyalists tanks, although that could not be confirmed.

He said the intent wasn t to capture to Sirte but to increase pressure on forces inside, claiming they had intercepted radio signals suggesting high-ranking former regime officials were in the city.

The former rebels had said they would wait to launch a fullscale attack until civilians could escape Sirte, but a brigade commander, Mohammed al-Sugatri, said the revolutionaries decided to advance because several families living in Sirte who are originally from the nearby anti-Gaddafi city of Misrata were in danger.

|

| NASA: 6-ton satellite hits Earth; location unknown Posted:

NASA s dead 6-ton satellite plunged to Earth early Saturday, but more than eight hours later, US space officials didn t know just where it hit. They thought the fiery fall was largely over water and the debris probably hurt no one.

The agency did not give a more specific location in a midday update on its website, which also said officials were not aware of any reports of injuries or property damage. Most of the spacecraft was believed to have burned up.

The bus-sized satellite first penetrated Earth s atmosphere somewhere over the Pacific Ocean, according to NASA and the US Air Force s Joint Space Operations Center. But that doesn t necessarily mean it all fell into the sea.

NASA s earlier calculations had predicted that the 20-year-old former climate research satellite would fall over a 500-mile (800-kilometre) swath and could include land.

Because the plummet began over the ocean and given the lack of any reports of people being hit, that "gives us a good feeling that no one was hurt," but officials didn t know for certain, NASA spokesman Steve Cole said.

The two government agencies said the 35-foot (11-metre) satellite fell sometime 0323 GMT and 0509 GMT Saturday, but with no precise time or location.

There was rampant speculation on the Internet and Twitter, much of it focusing on unconfirmed reports and even video of debris from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite over Alberta, Canada.

Jonathan McDowell of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said the spacecraft entered the atmosphere around 1615 GMT over the coast of Washington state. He said much of the debris likely fell over the Pacific Ocean, though its trajectory suggests some of it could have fallen over more heavily populated areas in the US and Canada, including Portland, Oregon; Seattle; Calgary, Alberta; and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

"Pieces are falling off of this flaming fire ball, and some of it has enough momentum to go hundreds of miles," he said.

Cole said that was possible because the last track for the satellite included Canada, starting north of Seattle and then in a large arc north then south. From there, the track continued through the Atlantic south toward Africa, but it was unlikely the satellite got that far if it started falling over the Pacific.

Cole said NASA was hoping for more details from the Air Force, which was responsible for tracking debris.

But given where the satellite may have fallen, officials may never quite know precisely.

"Most space debris is in the ocean. It ll be hard to confirm," Cole said.

|
| Gaza tunnel blast kills 3 Palestians: medics Posted:

Three young Palestinians were killed Saturday and four others injured in an explosion inside a tunnel used for smuggling goods into Gaza, Palestinian medical sources said.

The accident occurred near the Egyptian border, when a butane gas cylinder being transported through the tunnel exploded.

More than 100 Palestinians have been killed in recent years in accidents in smuggling tunnels linking Gaza to Egypt.

Numerous tunnels were dug under the border between Egypt and Gaza to get goods and weapons into Gaza, which has been under an Israeli blockade since 2006 and controlled by the Islamist Hamas.

|
| IMF says global economy entering dangerous phase Posted:

The top global finance officials are pledging to work decisively and in a coordinated way to deal with a European debt crisis and other dangers confronting the global economy.

The International Monetary Fund s policy-setting committee says the economy has entered a dangerous new phase. The IMF is already providing bailout support to three heavily indebted European countries Greece, Portugal and Ireland.

The IMF s statement doesn t give specifics on how much extra support might be possible.

|
| French ambassador attacked in Syria Posted:

An official says a group of Syrians has thrown eggs and stones at France s ambassador to Syria as he left a meeting in Damascus with a Greek Orthodox patriarch.

No injuries were reported to Ambassador Eric Chevallier or his aides in Saturday s attack, according to the diplomatic official in Paris.

Chevallier has had several confrontations with pro-government activists in Syria as his government and the European Union demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad end his government s violent crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators there.

The diplomatic official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the attackers who included men and women also were armed with iron bars but did not appear to use them.

|
| Kurdish rebels kill 5 Turkish soldiers Posted:

The guerrillas attacked the post near the town of Pervari in Siirt province. Authorities were not immediately available for comment. Three rebels also were killed.

The rebels planted mines in the area to prevent or slow down army reinforcements, and also were firing on helicopters taking troops to the area, the Hurriyet newspaper said on its website, citing unidentified local sources. Three rebels were killed in the ensuing clash.

The rebels also staged attacks on the local police headquarters and another army post in the town of Haani in Diyarbakir province. There were no immediate reports of casualties in those clashes.

Kurdish rebels have dramatically escalated their war for autonomy since July, killing dozens of security personnel and at least 10 civilians including three people in a car bomb attack in the Turkish capital earlier this week.

The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since the rebels took up arms in 1984.

|
| Biologists celebrate comeback of endangered ferret Posted:

Wildlife biologists say the black-footed ferret, once believed to be extinct, has made a comeback in the 30 years since its rediscovery. And celebrations are under way nationwide.

Badlands National Park in western South Dakota kicked off its three-day festival by releasing four of the endangered animals into the wild to do what they do best: attack and kill prairie dogs.

The ferrets were thought to have died out in the late 1970s. But a ranch dog in Wyoming presented a dead one to his owners in September 1981, which launched a recovery effort. In the three decades since, the ferret population has grown from 18 in the wild to more than 1,000.
Conservationists say they hope to be able to remove the ferret from the endangered-species list by 2020.

|
