Intelligence about ISI link not clear: Obama

WASHINGTON, Sept 30: US President Barack Obama said on Friday that Admiral Mike Mullen was expressing "frustration" over alleged terrorist safe havens in Pakistan when the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the Haqqani network was an arm of the country's intelligence service.
 
"The intelligence is not as clear as we might like in terms of what exactly that relationship is," said Mr Obama in a radio interview when asked about Admiral Mullen's testimony at a Senate hearing last week...

Militant leader among 3 dead in drone attack

LADDAH: A top-ranking militant 'commander' and a close aide to Maulvi Nazir was among three militants killed in a US drone attack in South Waziristan on Friday.
 
The pilotless aircraft fired eight missiles targeting a vehicle carrying militants of the group of Maulavi Nazir, near the ancestral graveyard of Ahmedzai Wazir and Masud tribes in Angoor Adda area. The vehicle was destroyed and three insurgents were killed on the spot...

Irsa chief calls for more reservoirs

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: Describing water flowing downstream Kotri as a wastage, the Indus River System Authority (Irsa) has requested Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani to immediately move on construction of reservoirs to ensure additional storage of about 22 million acre feet and strengthening of Pakistan's position vis-a-vis India.
 
Talking to reporters after a meeting of the authority on Friday, Irsa chairman Rao Irshad Ali Khan said that about 12MAF of water was lost downstream Kotri during Kharif this year while an average of 31MAF was going into the sea every year...

Fazl fears US move in UN against Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman said on Friday that the United States might move a resolution in the UN against Pakistan on its nuclear programme or terrorism and the country should counter the possible move by mustering international support, especially from China and Russia.
 
Addressing a press conference, he termed the US an unreliable ally and accused it of conspiring to weaken Pakistan after announcing a timetable for withdrawal of its troops from Afghanistan...

Petrol price increased

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: Prices of three major petroleum products have been increased by up to five per cent with effect from Saturday. The increase will be for the month of October.
The government deregulated prices of petroleum products on June 1 and allowed refineries and oil marketing companies to fix their ex-refinery and ex-depot prices on a monthly basis, keeping in view the import parity price. But the prices are notified by Ogra.
 
According to a late-night notification, the price of petrol for October was raised by Rs4.15 to Rs88.95 per litre and that of high octane blending component (HOBC) by Rs2.72 to Rs112.65 per litre...

Court set up to try 3 ex-generals in NLC case

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: After months of foot-dragging, the Ministry of Defence has finally constituted a court of inquiry to proceed against three retired army generals who have been found involved in mismanaging the funds of National Logistics Cell (NLC) from 2004 to 2008 which cost the military-run organisation a staggering loss of Rs1.8 billion.
 
"It is a proud moment for the Public Accounts Committee that on its recommendation the defence ministry, for the first time in the country's history, has agreed to set up a full court of inquiry against three former military generals," PAC Chairman Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said...

US embassy warehouse sealed

Profit on savings schemes reduced

ISLAMABAD, Sept 30: The National Savings Organisation (NSO) made on Friday a significant cut in profit rates on its six popular schemes with effect from Saturday.
 
According to an official announcement, the profit rate on Special Savings Certificates and Accounts has been reduced from 13.2 per cent per annum to 12.5 per cent, Regular Income Certificates from 13.44 to 12.6 per cent, Bahbood Savings Certificates and Pensioner Benefit Accounts from 15.36 to 14.4 per cent, Defence Savings Certificates from 13.55 to 12.68 per cent and Savings Accounts from nine per cent to 8.5 per cent per annum...
