Nusrat's years of torment end

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: Begum Nusrat Bhutto, who suffered the longest torment among Pakistani politicians but put up an epic fight against military dictatorship, died in a Dubai hospital on Sunday after a long illness. She was 82.
 
Thus came a quiet end to the life of the widow of former prime minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, mother of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto and mother-in-law of President Asif Ali Zardari, away from her homeland, where she will be brought on Monday for burial in a graveyard laden with family tragedies...

Indian helicopter forced to land

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: Pakistan on Sunday forced an Indian army helicopter to land for having violated its airspace, but later allowed the four officers on board and the helicopter to return after interrogating the officers for a couple of hours, military sources said.
 
They said a lieutenant colonel, two majors and a junior commissioned officer (JCO) were on board the Lama helicopter belonging to the Aviation Corps of the Indian army. The helicopter was deep inside Pakistani territory when it was intercepted and forced to land in the Olding-Kargil sector near the Line of Control (LoC)...

Massive quake rocks Turkey

ANKARA, Oct 23: A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Turkey on Sunday, killing at least 85 people and sparking widespread panic as it collapsed dozens of buildings into piles of twisted steel and chunks of concrete.
 
Turkish scientists estimated that up to 1,000 people could already be dead, basing the calculation on low local housing standards and the size of the quake...

Gilani launches frontal assault on PML-N

LAHORE, Oct 23: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, who had so far been exercising restraint against the Sharifs, launched on Sunday a direct assault on the PML-N leadership, saying the party was taking an unconstitutional route and humiliating the parliament by holding rallies against the country's elected President Asif Ali Zardari.

US, Pakistan 'agree on work plan'

WASHINGTON, Oct 23: The United States and Pakistan have 90-95 per cent agreement on a work plan to combat terrorists, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said on Sunday while reflecting on her two-day visit to Islamabad.
 
During the visit, which ended on Friday, the chief US diplomat urged Pakistan to move against extremists who were attacking American forces in Afghanistan or risk dwindling support from the US and further instability at home...

Three-month supply cut likely for industries: Severe gas shortage feared in winter

ISLAMABAD, Oct 23: With the onset of winter, a serious gas crisis is threatening the country as the shortfall is anticipated to reach the highest ever 2 billion cubic feet per day (BCFD) against the maximum output of a little over 4 BCFD, forcing the government to consider curtailing supply to the industrial sector for three months.
 
A senior government official told Dawn that the gap between supply and demand had already touched 700 MMCFD (million cubic feet of gas per day) this month – a level witnessed in the financial year 2009-10 when winter was at its peak (Dec-Jan). "The shortfall is estimated to go up by about three times to 1.9 BCFD during peak winter," he said..

Company seeks time to resolve Reko Diq dispute

Population census delayed for flaws in house listing
