Imran's Lahore rally stuns opponents

LAHORE, Oct 30: Imran Khan surprised his detractors on Sunday by holding a massive public meeting, described by political observers as one of the biggest rallies held in Lahore over the past two decades. And in a hard-hitting speech he asked the rulers to declare their assets and threatened a civil disobedience movement and a countrywide blockade if they did not do so.

"Declare your assets or face the wrath of people," the Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaaf chief roared...

KARACHI, Oct 30: MQM chief Altaf Hussain has advised the Pakistan Muslim League-N to wait for the next election and avoid what he called undemocratic tactics, dictatorial attitude and use of derogatory language against President Asif Ali Zardari.

Addressing an 'istehkam-i-jamhooriat' rally here on Sunday, Mr Hussain said the MQM, Pakistan People's Party, PML-Q and other democratic forces would join hands to foil conspiracies against democracy and raise their voice against undemocratic politics...

Bailout package for Nandipur power project

ISLAMABAD, Oct 30: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has cleared a bailout package for reviving the Rs29 billion Nandipur Thermal Power Project of 425MW whose machinery has been rusting at the Karachi port for 18 months because of legal wrangling between the federal ministries of law, and water and power.

The project has been allowed to suffer a delay of more than two years despite the fact that the country is going through prolonged loadshedding...

Six killed in US drone attack

Officials said all those killed in the attack were militants, but local people said they were tribesmen who had nothing to do with militancy...

LAHORE / KARACHI, Oct 30: There is another worrying weather forecast for lower Sindh and Balochistan which are still struggling to recover from the devastation caused by recent torrential rains.

A well-marked low pressure area developing over the central parts of Arabian Sea has intensified into a 'depression' (strong weather system) and is likely to generate widespread rain in southern Balochistan and lower Sindh from Tuesday to Thursday...

Australia PM wants talks on economic ties with Pakistan

PERTH, Oct 30: Australia has invited Pakistan to a dialogue to deepen economic ties, enhance cooperation in agriculture and launch joint ventures.

During a meeting with Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on the sidelines of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting here on Sunday, Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said her country looked forward to bilateral visits in 2012 to explore new avenues of cooperation between the two countries...

President reviews situation in flood-hit areas

KARACHI, Oct 30: Presiding over a meeting at the Bilawal House on irrigation, dewatering and drainage of flood-affected areas on Sunday, President Asif Ali Zardari directed the government to prepare water storage and drainage plans at the divisional level in the province.

He also called for devising a plan to divert rainwater to desert areas of the province during floods and store it for irrigation...
